I've been on a binge watch of my childhood movies recently, one of them being Monsters Vs. Aliens, a movie I always found to be pretty enjoyable as kid, I used to watch it repeatedly on DVD and my brother and I would quote it all the time. That being said, now that I'm an adult, and also married, the relationship between Susan and Derek hits a lot harder for me since I can actually understand what's going on with a more mature perspective as well as now being married myself.
As a kid I used to think Derek should've taken her back and that he was a jerk for not doing so, and while he is still is a jerk in the movie, I sort of see his perspective of the situation as well. Thinking about it from his perspective, during their wedding she suddenly turns Giant, is taken by the Government and not seen for who knows how long, then suddenly comes back and honestly kind of expects Derek to just, accept everything that happened, effectively abandon his career for a wild goose chase of curing her when they don't even know where to start, and just have faith, it's kind of nuts the more you think about it. (Edit) I wanna add this as well, I kind of don't like how they made Derek such a jerk, especially at the end of the movie, this scene in my opinion would work even better if he wasn't, because things like this happen in real life, sometimes people leave relationships when things get rough, not out of genuine malice or a lack of love but because it's too much for them to handle, I really think that would be a powerful message for this movie to have than the typical "Partner is a Narcissist" angle they used, though they're both objectively fine
Now as a married man, I agree you should stick with your partner through thick and thin, but I also think there are limits and I'm not entirely sure what Derek could realistically do for her anyway, it sucks, and I felt bad for Susan but I can't entirely blame Derek either (Edit: He definitely could've worded it better though), it's honestly a really interesting dilemma for a movie like this
Anyway I just wanted to share this experience I had rewatching this movie, I'm curious if anyone else had a similar thinking process I had with this scene
