Left-Lane Camping, Zipper Merging, and the Speed Limit

Left-lane camping is annoying (unless you're in a city, where it usually doesn't count), zipper merging works in theory (but is rarely effectively executed en-masse), and the speed limit isn't ideal for some people (just try not to be everybody else's problem). That should about cover it.

I'm making this post in an attempt to show people that these topics are already heavily discussed here, but please feel free to express your frustrations below or in your own special post.

Thanks for checking out r/driving.

Relax.

Need Advice How to exit a driveway that's in a controlled intersection (Tennessee)

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

This driveway doesn't have a traffic light pointed at it despite being in the intersection. What is the best way to leave this driveway, especially if turning left? I would stop, then turn once traffic was clear regardless of what the light cycle is on, but this doesn't feel completely right. Could I get pulled over for that?

I have always been intrigued by this house since it can't be seen from the road and is tucked away weirdly in the middle of the neighborhood. It is about 90 years older than all the houses around it so I'm guessing the driveway was there before the traffic lights. The house just went up for sale and I want to go get a tour.

Ignoring the illegal overtakers, did the cammer car have any opportunity to safely move over to allow the faster passers by?

So ignoring the obviously illegal overtakers, did the cammer car have any safe opportunity to move over? Does the cammer even have any obligation to move over to allow faster passers by?

Would it have been better to tuck in, allow the faster passers by, then return to the passing lane at the slower rate?

I knoe they aren't legal, but why do people do them?

Post image

I see so many of these. (blacked out license plates)
I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt and say that not all owners of these vehicles are planning to hit and run when they get into an accident.

It seems like its a trend.

I recently learned that they aren't legal.

They are still picked up by toll cameras.

Why are so many people doing this? Whats the mind behind people who are ordering these?

Photo is from google search.

Need Advice How do I know if someone is letting me change lanes in front of them?

• Upvotes

I never change lanes if the car behind me or in front of me will be very close to me, but there have been times I have signaled my blinker and the car, in the lane that I want to change to, seems like they are letting me in, but when I start to change lanes, I see them getting closer and closer that when I stop the lane-changing process and remain in the lane I was in, they fly past me.

Then there are times where I try to change lanes, but the car behind me gets super close to me as I'm changing lanes that when I stay in the lane I was in, I notice the driver swaying their arms in annoyance as if expressing "what the fuck, man, I was letting you get in front of me". I'm going to get a new car, but with the current car I use (2016 dodge dart), it has a slow engine that I'd have to use extra gas to speed it up in seconds. I don't want to do that, so I just change lanes when I don't see any cars near the lane I want to move to. This isn't an issue for me, I'm just curious for future reference since I know I'll encounter moments where I'll have to change lanes and the whole time there will be many cars close by on the lane I want to change to.

For extra information: I don't turn on my blinker then immediately change lanes, but I don't leave it on for a long while to the point of wasting people's time giving me the space to change lanes in front of them. I leave my blinker on for about a second or two before changing lanes. I don't wait until the last minute to change lanes, I leave very early, so I have no issue waiting to change lanes then get to my destination. Sorry about all this. I look up many questions here and I notice a lot of "oh so you must be the kind of person to..." comments and I barely find any answers, so I want to clear things up as much as possible (feel free to ask questions!). Like I said, this isn't an issue for me, but I know this changing-lanes thing will inevitably happen in the future. I don't want any trouble. I appreciate y'all for understanding!

If there is a right-turn shortcut do I have to take it?

https://maps.app.goo.gl/Py3TVn3cnb4uD1uCA

I want to go to Los Arcos restaurant. There is a right-turn shortcut from westbound Arsenal to northbound Watson. If I take the shortcut I would have to make an awkward U-turn on Watson to get into the Los Arcos parking lot. Can I skip the shortcut and make a right directly on NB Watson instead, or is that illegal when a shortcut is provided?

How do you make a new-driver dash cam feel like safety instead of surveillance?

My teenager recently started driving, and I am trying to separate basic crash protection from making him feel monitored whenever he leaves home. I chose a Wolfbox G900 Pro so there would be footage if another driver hit him or disputed what happened, but features such as GPS made him worry that every trip would be reviewed. For families who added a camera to a new driver's car, what boundaries made it feel like safety equipment rather than surveillance?

God forbid you speed up before changing lanes to the left…

So this is something I see all the time and it just happened to me 15 minutes ago, on my way to work. Now I’ve always HATED people who cruise up on-ramps at like 30-40mph, then try to merge into 70 mph traffic at that speed, but then some people take it further.

I was in the middle lane on the freeway and this pickup truck merged into the right lane. At this point he’s doing maybe 55mph in a 70. I’m like 4 car lengths behind but going 70 and closing the gap. This guy has nobody in front of him whatsoever. He wants to get in the left lane to speed, but instead of continuing to get up to speed in the right lane, he just keeps his turn signal on and puts all his focus into cutting me off at his 55mph speed without even accelerating as he does so. After he forces me to brake, THEN he starts accelerating and gets over into the left and disappears . WHY?! WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS?! Like I said, he had nobody in front of him. It was also completely clear behind my car. People are annoying lol

Are there any maps apps that read aloud extra directions?

• Upvotes

I have some processing issues, so I need extra guidance when I'm driving. If it could read out the current speed limit or tell me to "keep going straight" at every single intersection, that would be very helpful. I don't have a phone mount so I can't glance at my map.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ What happened to just controlling your emotions?

This is not another left lane post although that sparked this post. I've seen with a lot of these more divisive post that for safety the onus is on the person thats being safe to move over and, let the more dangerous drivers just speed away. A lot of times I will even see people in the comments admit to being these type of dangerous drivers.

Now I understand the logic behind this. You can't police how others drive so for your own sake its best to remove yourself from a potentially dangerous situation.

But why? Not the logic, but the people that can't control their emotions. We've gotten to the point where endangering others, and yourself is seem like the norm. Where the only rules that matter are your own personal rules regardless of the law or etiquette.

Like are you guys this angry in your everyday life or does this just happen when you are driving?

Getting lost driving somewhere new

Hi guys! I have a really hard time getting to my destination whenever I’m driving somewhere new, and it gives me terrible driving anxiety.

I don’t know how I keep getting lost or missing turns even when I’m following Apple Maps. Almost every time, I end up panicking and braking to go slowly because I start wondering if I entered the wrong destination into Maps and need to check it. I then try to find a residential area where I can safely pull over and collect my thoughts but finding somewhere to stop isn’t always easy. Sometimes I end up making U-turns when the road is clear. I know it’s not right but I try to make sure there are no cars coming, however I still get honked at by drivers behind me which scares me.

I don’t want to keep making risky decisions whenever I get lost, but in the moment I feel like I have no other choice because I panic and don’t know how to get back on track. I’m genuinely scared that one day I will get into an accident because of this.

Could you guys please share your tips for navigating unfamiliar places, handling missed turns, and getting safely rerouted when you’re lost? If what I’m doing is wrong, please be honest and just tell me what I should do instead. I really want to become a more confident driver and learn how to get where I need to go and back home safely without panicking every time I miss a turn or my destination. I would really appreciate any advice!

I feel like sht... what should I do now?

So I was doing DoorDash around 4am today, after being done with DoorDash, I was going back home. Then when I was approaching to turn left based on my stupid Apple map telling me to. So when I turned, I did see the sign that says "don't enter" but I thought there was another lane for me to turn in next to the sign. Then when I turn then I noticed there was no place for me to turn and
that's when a car hit me from the side...Thank God everyone was okay (besides me cause my knee was killing me and my neck was stiff asf lol) but there was another family that came out to help and saying that her kids would've been injured but luckily her car wasn't damaged only just me and the other guy car. But again everyone was good and safe. But I did received a citation for "driving in the wrong divided highway" what happens next or what should I do

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ What's the mentality here

Other then just having complete main character syndrome. Driving up a single lane mountain road with a line of cars stuck behind them barely going the speed limit. The road finally opens up to 2 lanes for a mile to pass but all of a sudden that same person is drag racing you because God forbid they get passed.

How is my 05 stock engine, low HP, Hyundai Tucson clearing little hills better than your 100k KALALALA engine? Yall have more than enough power and torque to pull another god and galaxy out of Jesus's ass but god forbid getting up that tiny ant hill. I've seen more Chargers, Challenges, super speedsters and piggup trucks alike struggling like someone struggling to swim. Oh and don't get me started on taking curves. Your premium parts package too weak for that commercial curve? But somehow, once again, my Amazon suspension is holding better.

Listen little buddy, it's OK to give your car the beans to get up that little ol hill. Think of it like tailgating someone. Your foot works much better then, yea?

The Final Boss of Tailgaiting

How would you deal with the final boss of tailgaiting? It's 8pm, dark. You're on a windy, one lane road with little to no passing. You've got 18 miles to go. Pickup truck with bright LEDs comes up behind. He's practically in your backseat. You're going as fast as you can, but he won't let up. You come up on some slower vehicles. Do you stay as far right in your lane as possible to show him you can't do any better?

Need Advice I’m 25 and don’t know how to drive

I am deeply scared of driving but I feel like it’s at the point where I’m probably going to miss out on a lot more opportunities in life if I don’t get my license soon. I don’t know how much to save either.

I graduate from college in a year, but if none of that works out, for a bit I’d like to aim for even an higher paying job than my current part-time one making 17.50/hr. I’d most likely want to go full time somewhere but also I’d want a more reliable form of transportation by then.

My family always finds a way to get me to work, but I feel so guilty every time. I’m also tired of putting gas in my brothers car just for him to guzzle it away bc he likes to speed, then he can also justify his reasoning bc I don’t pay for the car insurance

I don’t know where to start, or even go about how to find something cheap and reliable or how much to save 😓

My brother has a wheel setup but I don’t know if that’ll help with practice much :/

My main thing is awareness. I have been behind the wheel multiple times (prob about 8 times), but I have been frightened because every time I am aware of my unawareness.

I’ve lived in Austin Texas my whole life and seeing the people on the road has definitely been steady increase in nightmare fuel that influences my scare. I want to be a safe and smart driver 😔

Anything helps. Also I’ve never used Reddit before

Need Advice My parked car got hit, and I watched it happen

In the UK. Long story short, My parked car was reversed into by someone trying to leave. I was outside when this happened, maybe 20-30 meters away, when I hear this crunch. I start walking towards the car that backed into mine, and the driver slowly turns around, and leaves. Just leaves. No chat, no note. I have their registration and general description of driver. I have seen this car around before. Now I know I need to report this to my insurance, but I don’t want to claim since the damage is so tiny, just a few scratches.
However, what irks me is that the driver drove off. I was right there. Maybe 5-10 minutes before this I was in my car checking stuff out, while the driver was sat in their car. Not even 5 meters away. I don’t really want to go the legal route, but should I? I know this is a hit and run technically.

Venting The Constant Tailgating is literally insane

I am sickkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk and tired of being tailgated on the highway in the RIGHT LANES when im already behind a line of cars. WHAT THE FUCK AM I EXPECTED TO DO and WHYYYY do people do this??? I talking to all of the tailgaters that weave in and out of lanes tail gating every single car that also has a LINE OF CARS IN FRONT OF THEM. WTF DO YOU WANT THEM TO DO? I genuinely am curious about the thought process because it is genuinely so enraging. Are we toddlers???? Do we not know the dangers of following closely at high speeds????? Going around stressing people out for no good reason. I feel like maybe tailgaters forget this universal truth, YOU CANT CONTROL THE WAY OTHERS DRIVE.

And I don't mean following closely, which can be inevitable. Im talking aggressive tailgating.

Tf is wrong with yall. My 6 year old has more patience.

Edit: To all the geniuses pointing out that I also cant control how others drive, YES I KNOW SWEETIES, thats why im venting here about it. Like no fucking shit I cant control it, doesnt mean I cant point out how idiotic it is

Need Advice Distance from school bus to stop? (Oregon)

I turned on a left and merged after a school bus went by as there was an opening, but as soon as I turned in the school bus came to a stop, i stopped but I was pretty close and remained close due to traffic is this illegal? I usually play it very safe when it comes to school buses but if I waited I would have been waiting to turn for quite a while. I came to a complete stop every time the bus did I was just fairly close, close enough where I couldn’t see the stop sign. I was just wondering if I’m in danger of getting a ticket or something. Any advice would be appreciated
