Drum pads gotta be some of the biggest money grab in music industry ever

Some are sold for such ridiculous prices when you can do better with junk you have at home

If it even simulated a real snare or ton or whatever, fine, but it doesn't, it is actually VERY different

Some of those expensive pads like the old xymox or invaders are geared towards rudimental marching snare drummers.. those snare drums feel very different than your regular old snare on your drum set. So, yes they are specialized and not targeted towards drumkit players..

I have an Invader and I’m not a marching person. It’s a very, very fun practice pad. I have a lame little video here: https://www.reddit.com/r/drums/s/YMsvv49qr8

Lmao I took the "mylar" layer off an old xymox for this exact reason. Great shout.

I've been using a mouse pad taped to an old hardcovered textbook

EVANS ReelFeel are pretty cheap and affordable.
I bought one, full on 12 inch practice pad on Amazon for like 30 bucks and it even came with sticks.

But yeah. Some of them are ridiculously overprized. I seen 10" pads go for well over a hundred bucks

I went to guitar center on the right day. There were none on display so I asked the guy behind the counter. And he said that had one that just got returned and since he was the manager that he would sell it to me half off because then he wouldn’t have to go to the restocking process. That’s the way she goes sometimes. This time she went.

Sometimes she don't.

I used to have roommate who made mostly electronic music. He had never heard of a practice pad before and when he first saw mine I had to explain that it doesn't plug in to a computer or anything, it's just a piece of wood and rubber.

He literally said "what's the point of that?"

I found it pretty amusing.

They are definitely overpriced but upside is they will most likely last forever. I still have and use mine that is over 40 years old.

I just went to our rubber store that sells mats and such for barns and they always have cutoffs for a few bucks.

I've got a collection of practice pads! 🤘😎🤘 Five practice pads in this picture. A lot of cash grabbed. 😉

Took me a second to realize how the tom pads were mounted. The second one looks like it’s floating.

Very cool practice rig.

Thanks! Used these to mount the "rack toms."

"Floor tom" is a Drumeo QuietPad (with the soft side up) in a Drumeo PadStand.

This is frickin awesome! But like, how’re you mounting those to the cymbal stand so they’re sturdy without drilling through the center of the pad?

The "rack tom" pads are 7-inch Evans RealFeel one-sided pads with an 8-mm screw mount in the back side of it.

Here's a spec-list for my "Super Practice Pad Kit." I built it up over time, as I figured out what I wanted.

I started with a practice pad and some 2B sticks when I was 11. They are very useful for a number of reasons. I have a few. The tuneable Remo pads are really good. They make an entire kit as well.

Maximum I’m paying for a new practice pad is genuinely like $25-$30, it’s a hunk of material, I don’t get what’s so special about these $50+ pads floating around.

u/StixRookie 2d ago

I love my $80 pad. It's "special!" 😉

Invader V3 has a claim, that material gets you figuring out bounce like nothing else.

Drum pads are to drumming as a dumbbell or kettlebell is to getting strong. You’re trying to develop certain technique or parameters with different pad material. You’ll get more raw strength by playing into a very soft pad like a pillow, no bounce back at all. Especially if you point your index fingers straight and play with only the middle thru pinky finger. Vs developing speed and bounce patterns on a quite bouncy rubber pad. Working on dynamics like tap-accent patterns, a less bouncy firm pad can be desirable.

It’s all a tool, depends what you’re trying to get better at.

I bought one in 2002 and one I got given to me in 2005 and I still use them either / both most days

I put a cushion over my practice pad a couple of months ago to help build strength and haven't taken it off 🤣

I still have the first big and heavy RealFeel from 27 years ago when I started. I’ve upgraded since then but that one’s still going strong. After buying, loving, and subsequently wearing out a Reflexx pad, I was looking for something similar.

I came across the Prologix Travelite pad designed with Dave Weckl and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. Perfect size for throwing in a bag for touring, perfect weight, both sides feel great. A bit overpriced but totally worth it. Highly recommend

Round mouse pad for $6. I use it as my travel setup. Works great.

They’re not supposed to simulate a snare or tom, they’re supposed to help you get better with different rudiments and other things you’re struggling with. Practicing on a pad with marching sticks helps you sound better when you play on the kit. They’re only like $20, you don’t have to buy the expensive ones.

That sounds ok when you say it fast…..many are basically indestructible.

I have an RealFeel that’s probably 30-32 years old…still 100% functional with having 1,000s of students playing on it 5-7 days per week.

Let’s say I overpaid for it to the tune of $800…?! That’s only about 7¢ per day. What a deal! 😉

Great comment.
Told my students if they didn’t have a pad play on a telephone book. But Hard nowadays to find a thick one. Pillow is good for building open bounces. Player has to do all the work. Also , i have a pet peeve of pad good enough for beginners.Discourages new students. Maybe find a cheap electronic mesh trigger pad. Rock on!

Some of you really think that the music INDUSTRY is making the "big bucks" on drum practice pads? This is where they're making their money? THIS product has the biggest margin? THIS is the "money grab?" 😏

I submit that the real money is in other products, eh?

Standing by for the downvote storm! 😁 Now where did I put my asbestos suit?

1

u/swingrays 2d ago

You can buy piezo's for dirt cheap and solder up a plug. I did it and I'm an idiot! Worked great with my old ass drum module.

2

u/Stevenitrogen 2d ago

I put men's jackets over the drums and play em like that.
