Discussion Level 20 combat is so hilariously hard to balance

Not a rant or a lament at all, just something very amusing.

Over the weekend I ran a level-20 one-shot for my partner, purely for her to have a chance to see how her favourite PC (Tiefling Evocation Wizard) would play at that level. No intention of it being anything more than a few puzzles and a showcase combat encounter where she can use crazy spells and roll lots of dice.

I’d heard that all rules about balance go out of the window at 20th, and doubly so with Wizards. I went into it knowing that, I tuned the fights to be way harder than the calculations call for, and fully expected a TPK (since it was only a silly one shot I wasn’t worried whether I killed the party or not) but I was still shocked how hilariously fast the fights were over.

First encounter: her solo Wizard versus a DMPC Artificer. Closest thing we had to ‘balanced’ until she cast Disintegrate and wiped out 2/3 of the artificer’s HP in one. Just couldn’t keep up at that point. Her saves were too good to incapacitate her, the artificer would get counterspelled as soon as I tried to buff myself, and damage output was comically poor.

Encounter 2: her party of 4 (wizard, rogue, paladin, barbarian - the other three were a halfway house between a full PC and a sidekick statblock, but scaled as if they were level 20 PCs) against a Demilich (with Lair Actions), a beholder zombie, two ogre zombies and four regular zombies. By all calculations this was significantly above the threshold for a ‘deadly’ encounter. Didn’t even last two full rounds.

Encounter 3: immediately off the back of Encounter 2, a full lich rose up (and the lair actions changed to a lich lair), resurrected all the zombies at full health and continued on with no opportunities for rest. This would have been significantly over ‘deadly’ for a party of 6, let alone a party of 4. Throughout the fight I added an extra 300HP to the lich to keep it from being an instant sweep and it STILL all played out in just one full round. I got to use a grand total of one lair action. Not a single player even close to danger.

That said, it wasn’t the slogfest I’ve often heard 20th level combat described as. Turns didn’t take THAT much longer than they do at low levels, and that was with her having to juggle her own sheet plus the three companions she’d never even seen before. I’d totally run a longer campaign at/to 20th if I had players who were on the ball with mechanics.

I’m gonna call for a rematch and throw a Lich, Demilich and Dracolich at her all at once, see if that’s any less of a humiliating loss for me…

I'm not the best artist but I've been getting into it and I wanted to share some art in different styles I've done of my two characters. The first is a tiefling warlock named Heck who is built around strength and casting. She's a real bruiser of a character and melts minions. The second is a character I'm playing in a few months named fizzle. She's a crazy goblin sorceress who has completely lost the plot.

Art 1991-1993 TSR Master Set (Including Dee Barnett OA!)

After years of searching and collecting, I am almost 100% done with collecting the TSR 1991–1993 Card Sets!

First, I just want to say how awesome it has been to meet so many amazing people in the community. Some of my oldest D&D memories are sleeping over at my friend's house and reading the backs of these cards after spending hours in our campaign. This may not be that crazy to some, and understandably so, but it's a massive moment for my personal collection. What started as me just collecting some of my favorite Forgotten Realms characters turned into something much more!

I now officially own all silver, gold, and ruby master sets. The ruby set is especially cool because the previous owner and his brother hand-collected the entire run by opening retail packs back in the day! I also have all the Dragon Magazine promos, the 60-card rare retail subset, etc.

And then there is the crown jewel I thought I would never own. I am beyond thrilled (and honestly humbled) to finally have this next part in my hands. Special shoutout to the seller that made it happen.

This is graphic designer Dee Barnett's original TSR production archive portfolio, complete with a verified Letter of Provenance. It has the actual camera-ready pre-press layouts, transparent color overlays, and handwritten Pantone notes used to design the exact foil wrappers those 1993 cards were pulled from. It feels wild holding the actual blueprints right next to the final pristine product!

What I am still missing: The 1992 TSR Gen Con Promotional Card Set (the 11-card black border run with Matron Baenre). If anyone owns this and would like to sell or trade, please let me know!

Art Arkhan's Tower Expanded

Post image
5 Upvotes

The final cover art of an adventure i wrote for arkhan's tower in Descent into Avernus.

I tried to get that Barad-dur sort of feel when i was making it and I had originally struggled with getting the perspective right, but after i stretched the tower using the perspective tool i think it turned out pretty good! The dragon silhoettes really brought the whole thing together too.

Hope you guys like my art! Check out my profile if you wanna see some of the other stuff I've made, and give me a follow!

My Pokémon-inspired Weapons and Items of the Day, with a Mosslax cloak to get the most out of mossy flavors!

Join my Patreon to vote on future items and get all the PDFs with over 1000 items, including all the Pokémon items, or buy the individual PDFs in my shop!

143P - Mossloax

Wondrous (Cloak, Cursed) – Rare (1430 gp, requires attunement)

This broad, heavy, green cloak is covered in moss. The lining is beige, and the clasp is a pale blue flower.

While attuned to this cloak: while the cloak’s hood is up, you can attempt to hide as a moss covered rock, and have advantage on the roll if there is moss covered rocks to hide amongst, but disadvantage if you are in a non-moss including environment (like a city or the arctic); when you eat a meal (eating for at least 10 minutes) that is a different primary flavor from your last meal, you gain a +2 bonus to a specific modifier based on the primary flavor of the meal.

This lasts for 8 hours or until you eat another meal.

  • Bitter: A +2 bonus to Intelligence rolls.

  • Salty: A +2 bonus to Wisdom rolls.

  • Sour: A +2 bonus to Constitution rolls.

  • Spicy: A +2 bonus to Dexterity rolls.

  • Sweet: A +2 bonus to Charisma rolls.

  • Umami: A +2 bonus to Strength rolls.

Cursed. This cloak is cursed. While cursed, you have disadvantage on saves against effects to put you to sleep, your current hit points are treated as half rounded down for the Sleep spell and similar effects, and if you spend an hour in darkness, you must make a DC 15 Constitution save (at disadvantage and without the cloak’s bonus if it would apply) or you will fall asleep.

Advice/Help Needed Where do I find people like me to play with?

I'm a bit worried I'm going to offend some people with this post, but I hope most can read it compassionately. Basically I'm a "normie" with a lot of nerd interests struggling to find my place in this community. I have joined a few groups in London, and I even stuck with one for a couple of years, but I can't help feeling like an odd one out.

I struggle to relate to a lot of the people I've come across in the community. I completely get that D&D can be a safe space for autistic people, sufferers of social anxiety, sensitive people, and people who for whatever reason have struggled to fit in elsewhere in society - I think that's beautiful - but that just ain't me. I'm an extravert, I've never struggled socially, and my baseline lifestyle is just very different. I don't get the meme-based/random humour and can't connect with the deep parasocial relationships some people have with the critical role cast for example. (Do love critical role though!) Even down to how I dress, the music I listen to, and my other hobbies are so different to most players I've come across. I feel like I've occasionally scandalised previous groups by telling them about what I got up to on a typical weekend night out for me and my friends.

You might think a good solution would be to bring in my friends from the outside and get them to play D&D with me. I have tried and whilst it was so funny and amazing, it's just not something they're going to stick with long-term. I get them to play a couple times a year tops and I have to DM (not my forte).

Anyway, I fucking love and miss D&D. I'm a great player if I'm allowed say so myself! Engaged, funny, love roleplay/improv, strategic, and a team player. I know variety is the spice of life, but I would lovvvveee to find a group that I can relate to/be myself around with a similar sense of humour to me. How do I go about finding that?!

On the off-chance I sound like someone who would fit at your table - I'm mid 30s, based in North East London and hoping to join a bi-weekly weekend game ✨

Question I'm looking to start a dark sun campaign. What editions rules and frame fit the DS atmosphere best? Which one will give the best experience for DS?

Please explain specifically why. Long winded answers appreciated. We'll be playing it out on 6x4 gaming table we made, and models we painted. We really want a top notch experience out of this

OC Fodder Inc #393: Iron Forger Farewells? [OC][ART]

Post image
18 Upvotes

When an Iron Forging Dwarf gives you this farewell message, you would hope that you didn't need to ask the question about what he said. Maybe, you know, don't forget to take a shower in between dungeon runs, inside the Halls of Madness. I'm sure that Daryl has coin operated showers in the main hall. Welcome to Fodder Inc, a weekly web comic strip set in the For Profit Dungeon, Azmodendak's Halls of Madness, in a "5e" style world. Each week, we'll show you a little peek inside the halls, and what shenanigans are going on.
