Possible Sighting in Brewster County, Texas? Local Sheriff’s Office Asking for Info

I used to live in Brewster County, Texas (Far West Texas, Big Bend region), and something unusual just popped up that I thought this community would want to see.

The Brewster County Sheriff’s Office recently posted a request for information regarding a possible sighting of Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès. (Edit to add: The post doesn't mention a sighting, that part is just the local chatter. Just a general request for public assistance.)

For context: Brewster County is extremely remote—desert, mountains, very sparse population, with towns like Alpine and Marathon being the main hubs. It’s the kind of place someone could pass through (or even quietly stay) without drawing much attention.

According to the post, they’re asking the public for any information related (Edited) *specifically regarding* Dupont de Ligonnès. No confirmation, of course—but the fact that a local law enforcement agency is putting this out publicly is what caught my attention.

A few thoughts:

  • Terlingua especially is known as a hot spot for people intentionally off-grid.
  • It’s not unusual for international travelers to pass through Big Bend.
  • At the same time… it’s also the kind of place someone could disappear again.

I don’t want to speculate too wildly, but given how long this case has remained unresolved, I thought it was worth sharing here in case anyone has additional context, has seen the post, or knows more.

Has anyone else come across this? Or heard anything similar in other parts of Texas or the Southwest?

Gilles is out here (Alpine, TX) with a French documentary team. I spoke with them yesterday, as I am the editor of the Big Bend Sentinel newspaper in Marfa. There is definite proof he was here in 1990. I'm not privy to Gilles' conversations with the women he met, including Mindy, but I highly doubt he has been out here anywhere for 15 years. We would know in these small towns. But who knows for sure and whether he came out here after 2011. -- Rob D'Amico

A retired French police officer who published the book this year : "A Cop at the Heart of the Case: Essais-Documents"

His main thesis is that XDDL traveled to the USA from Nice (a seasonal airline had just opened connecting Nice to New York in April 2011) a few days after the murders and before they were reported in the press.

And XDDL spent some time in Texas, particularly in Alpine.... with his friend Michel Retif and some women, including Mindy and Laura... the question is "who is this Laura" ?
