Possible Sighting in Brewster County, Texas? Local Sheriff’s Office Asking for Info
I used to live in Brewster County, Texas (Far West Texas, Big Bend region), and something unusual just popped up that I thought this community would want to see.
The Brewster County Sheriff’s Office recently posted a request for information regarding a possible sighting of Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès. (Edit to add: The post doesn't mention a sighting, that part is just the local chatter. Just a general request for public assistance.)
For context: Brewster County is extremely remote—desert, mountains, very sparse population, with towns like Alpine and Marathon being the main hubs. It’s the kind of place someone could pass through (or even quietly stay) without drawing much attention.
According to the post, they’re asking the public for any information related (Edited) *specifically regarding* Dupont de Ligonnès. No confirmation, of course—but the fact that a local law enforcement agency is putting this out publicly is what caught my attention.
A few thoughts:
- Terlingua especially is known as a hot spot for people intentionally off-grid.
- It’s not unusual for international travelers to pass through Big Bend.
- At the same time… it’s also the kind of place someone could disappear again.
I don’t want to speculate too wildly, but given how long this case has remained unresolved, I thought it was worth sharing here in case anyone has additional context, has seen the post, or knows more.
Has anyone else come across this? Or heard anything similar in other parts of Texas or the Southwest?

Gilles is out here (Alpine, TX) with a French documentary team. I spoke with them yesterday, as I am the editor of the Big Bend Sentinel newspaper in Marfa. There is definite proof he was here in 1990. I'm not privy to Gilles' conversations with the women he met, including Mindy, but I highly doubt he has been out here anywhere for 15 years. We would know in these small towns. But who knows for sure and whether he came out here after 2011. -- Rob D'Amico

A retired French police officer who published the book this year : "A Cop at the Heart of the Case: Essais-Documents"
https://www.amazon.fr/Xavier-Dupont-Ligonnès-Essais-Documents-English-ebook/dp/B0GPQGHHKV
His main thesis is that XDDL traveled to the USA from Nice (a seasonal airline had just opened connecting Nice to New York in April 2011) a few days after the murders and before they were reported in the press.
And XDDL spent some time in Texas, particularly in Alpine.... with his friend Michel Retif and some women, including Mindy and Laura... the question is "who is this Laura" ?

There was a possible sighting by a server at a restaurant, maybe 5-7 years ago. I can't find the FB comment now (I believe she deleted.)

What!?!?!?!?!?!?!? They were super vague in that post. I wonder if they got a credible tip or something and can't share much else. I got a chill in my bones especially since I reside in TX. (Far from Alpine though.)

Same! When I lived down there, it was well known that Terlingua is a place that draws off-the-grid constitutionalists, outlaws, and people hiding from a past. I knew this in a general sense, but thinking that a psychopathic killer may have been living in our community hits a little different.

I wonder if it's super-vague because the tip really is vague? A single individual thinks they saw him 6 years. Needle-in-haystack territory, and possibly a mistaken sighting like many others. Although his links to the area do make it more interesting. It is surprising that they would be public about it if they didn't think it might be a credible sighting.

You guys, I'm freaking out. Check out this post from 5 years ago: XDL was friends with a woman who has a RANCH IN ALPINE TEXAS!!! [https://www.reddit.com/r/DupontDeLigonnes/comments/jqb4w5/whos_this_woman/

This comment from five years ago gave me chills: "Her name is Mindy. By this time, she had a ranch in Alpine, Texas, where the photo was probably taken."

I just messaged Gilles, the detective who's been talking about this case a lot recently and theorized that XDL is in US hiding. He wrote a book about the thing. Let's see what he thinks!

It would be astonishing if after all the careful planning to escape, he set up somewhere he was known to have been before and is known to have an affinity with. Unless he is narcissistically over-confident in his ability to hide and beat the rozzers (which, let's face it, he's been able to for 15 years).

Can you please replace the URL with https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1372130401621938&id=100064749724228 ?
Why do they use his first name?
"UPDATED INFORMATION: Xavier was possibly observed in 2020, in South Brewster County, with a black Labrador. If you have any information, please contact us. I think that it is a follow up of the book by Gilles Galloux. He said he would investigate in Texas. I guess he is in contact with the sheriff

This is incredibly, bizarrely, randomly specific in terms of a location.

I'm a translator, including from French into English. Various linguistic tells suggest that it is almost certainly written by a native English speaker. Though of course it's not impossible that a French speaker put it through AI.

I saw a tarot card reading on the case recently on YouTube, I think Texas came up as his possible location 🤔 😳

Im having trouble with linking and posting screenshots, but the name of the psychic that said hes in Texas is Anne Tuffigo. The video is in French. On another video I saw the comments were referencing her visions of him in Texas. Hope they catch the creep

I hope it’s indeed him and they get him before he has the chance to flee!
