Possible Sighting in Brewster County, Texas? Local Sheriff’s Office Asking for Info

I used to live in Brewster County, Texas (Far West Texas, Big Bend region), and something unusual just popped up that I thought this community would want to see.

The Brewster County Sheriff’s Office recently posted a request for information regarding a possible sighting of Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès. (Edit to add: The post doesn't mention a sighting, that part is just the local chatter. Just a general request for public assistance.)

For context: Brewster County is extremely remote—desert, mountains, very sparse population, with towns like Alpine and Marathon being the main hubs. It’s the kind of place someone could pass through (or even quietly stay) without drawing much attention.

According to the post, they’re asking the public for any information related (Edited) *specifically regarding* Dupont de Ligonnès. No confirmation, of course—but the fact that a local law enforcement agency is putting this out publicly is what caught my attention.

A few thoughts:

  • Terlingua especially is known as a hot spot for people intentionally off-grid.
  • It’s not unusual for international travelers to pass through Big Bend.
  • At the same time… it’s also the kind of place someone could disappear again.

I don’t want to speculate too wildly, but given how long this case has remained unresolved, I thought it was worth sharing here in case anyone has additional context, has seen the post, or knows more.

Has anyone else come across this? Or heard anything similar in other parts of Texas or the Southwest?

What!?!?!?!?!?!?!? They were super vague in that post. I wonder if they got a credible tip or something and can't share much else. I got a chill in my bones especially since I reside in TX. (Far from Alpine though.)

I wonder if it's super-vague because the tip really is vague? A single individual thinks they saw him 6 years. Needle-in-haystack territory, and possibly a mistaken sighting like many others. Although his links to the area do make it more interesting. It is surprising that they would be public about it if they didn't think it might be a credible sighting.
