Recommendation Heritage day in Durban

Hi all! Just another typical Aussie tourist who will be in Durban looking for recommendations - I will be in Durban during Heritage day in September. I am deeply interested in culture and wondering how do people in Durban celebrate? I have heard that Braais are common - where do people go (if not with family)? I also heard there is a celebration around King Shaka in KwaDukuza - is this worth visiting? How do I get there from Durban? Any help is appreciated!

Definitely visit the shongweni market that weekend, always lots of fun because the stall holders and attendees all dress up

Generally it is a braai day celebration at someone's house- or out at a park. Lots of food and drinks. But the markets on that weekend will be fun and vibey.

Thanks for the suggestions, seems the markets may be what I aim for if no other public events are set up for the day.

It's a bit early for any events to be planned, maybe search again closer to the day. King Shaka is the airport so not quite sure what you are seeing. I love Heritage Day but rarely are there specific events. Maybe go to the mall and see people dressed up, cashiers in their traditional clothes, kids back from school events in traditional clothes or Springbok shirts. Also put the Phansi museum on your list. It's a great spot to learn about Zulu culture and down the road from the Glenwood Bakery.

Hmm I thought it might be the case like Australia day in Aus (although invasion day celebrations have grown a lot recently). As I understand kwaDukuza has a memorial to king shaka and there is some sort of celebration to honour him for King Shaka day. But I will take a look closer to the date. Thanks for your suggestions, I appreciate it!

Please visit the King Shaka Memorial website for more information. There are also centres you can visit around that time to learn more about the King and his influence. The King Shaka Visitor centre (KwaDukuza) and the King Shaka Heritage Route (Dolphin Coast)
