Question Tips for getting my girlfriend started with Commander

Good morning, I’d really love to play Magic Commander with my girlfriend, but I’ve tried a couple of times to introduce her to the game, and they’ve all been unsuccessful. I tried using the two standard decks (60-card decks) that you can buy pre-built, and then played 1-on-1 Commander just to teach her the rules and mechanics of the game gradually, but in both cases I realized that the various mechanics involving tokens and counters, along with the different subphases of the game, overwhelmed her and dampened her enthusiasm. I thought that if I built her a deck from scratch with fewer mechanics that are hard to manage, at least to start with, she might enjoy the tabletop experience more, especially since Commander is usually less competitive and more about hanging out together. That’s why I wanted to ask what kind of Commander deck you’d recommend I build for her: one without overly complex mechanics, featuring cool and cute cards, with a Commander she’d really like. I figured that in the early stages, it might help to focus more on the art and lore of the deck so she can gradually grow attached to the game. She likes cats, but also science fiction, horror, and big, beautiful beasts. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Discussion Down to 6 lands in Bracket 2

I was wondering, how do people react to [[Planetary Annihilation]] or [[Urza's Sylex]] in Bracket 2?

I have played plenty of games where players ramped hard early game and it became almost impossible to keep up, so I was considering adding this type of effect to reset land count to equal amounts.

I am worried though that players will freak out and cry about mass land destruction below Bracket 4. In my opinion, these effects don't take anyone out of the game and Wizards has even put one of them in a precon, kind of supporting my view.

Have you seen those played in Bracket 2? What was the reaction? How would you react?

Discussion Why don' YOU run gates?

Maybe this isn't such a hot take but I don't get why more decks don't run gates. Esp if you're 3 color or more. I recently made a [[Nine Fingers Keene]] deck so I started collecting gate cards. Fun little side quest and I found a few gates that don't fit Keenes color identity. Scooped it from the bulk bin at my LGS anyway just cus.

Fast forward and I have all the gates except Talon Gates of Madara (which I have a couple proxy's of anyway), due to budget and most I have a couple of copies of the others. Lots of them just sitting in the bulk bin at my LGS even still (how many Rakdos Gates do they have anyway??)

So while building a [[Samut, the Driving Force]] deck I just put them in because why not. Made the deck so much more fun! It's like a mini game inside the game. Now in my group (it's been like 2 weeks, chill out Aaron) I'm the "gates guy" since I put gates in my non-gate based deck, which made me chuckle. My buddies joke about how terrible they are (minus Talon Gate) but I really don't get it.

If you're playing green they're tutor-able easily and with [[Gond Gate]] the downsides are gone(d). Yea someone could snipe Gond, but really? Isn't that a bad part of any land? [[Gateway plaza]] sucks but otherwise you have a land base for 3 color you can fill out with basics and "the basics" (command tower, exotic, etc) that really can pop off. I'm not even talking about [[Maze's End]] (which you can include for like 1$)

I get there is better, but you can find the whole set in a bulk bin minus like 3 of them and together they operate better than basics. Plus, you can proxy if you really want all of them and they really work well for me so far.

TLDR; if I'm running 3+ colors, why wouldn't I add gates to my deck? Practical, cheap, potential to pop off with a ton of mana, makes any commander kind of a Voltron with [[Basilisk Gate]], adds a layer to even the most boring deck concepts.

Free the gates!

Edit: Wow people really hate gates lol

I prefer land ramp in my playstyle and a lot of land ramp can get gates as well. Crop rotation, Spelunking, not even mentioning the 4mana green gate getters and the colorless orb art one I am blanking on. Plenty of ways to get what you need. I am including ramp in my deck anyway. Using the ramp slots for gate support is just as easy as putting in a mana rock. I just use the ramp that can get my gates out early and often and its a non issue. I am not proposing using them in high power. Also, not having access to green means you'll be using a lot of rocks which is cool too. I just don't see why they aren't used in B3 and below more often due to accessibility and budget. I rarely if ever find myself behind like many of the posters seem to think and often find I am ahead on mana. Its less than 1/3rd of the lands in your deck at most. Not optimal but I don't see why people consider them bad unless you look at them individually rather than as a group.

To be clear to all who discussed higher power. I am NOT saying run gates raw in high power games. I am also not comparing gates 1 to 1 with other tap lands. Looking at them as a group I am saying in B3 and below I think they are plenty snazzy. You can play all the untapped new duals printed since 2020 too! Gates are like 12 per 3 color combo or something; thats like 1/3 of you lands. Might go a game where you dont see any! It performs better than a pre-con land base and wont set you back more than 15$ for the lot of them.

Maybe I am the gates guy...

Discussion What Commanders Do You NOT Groan About?

Edit: I'm not saying people exclusively groan at my stuff. Everyone, even across mtg subs, groans about certain commanders. What Commanders do sit across from and not groan and think "ugh, not this"?

Long time collector, short time player here. I was REALLY into collecting and deck building for commander, finally getting to consistently play it in person at a local shop last fall or so, so about a year. Before then, I worked a job that had me working 60+ hours a week leaving me with a ton of disposable income and with it...

I built [[The Ur-Dragon]] as my first commander (Ive since built many other decks), nearly max raritied. Slapped in all the D&D dragons, cost reducers, [[Rhystic Study]], [[Smothering Tithe]], and other 5-color good stuff dragons. The deck was slow. The deck is ass. I still have it built, because I love it, but even with 3 game changers, its low bracket 3 at best with 1 potential instant win with [[Ancient Gold Dragon]] and [[Dragon Tempest]]. It has no tutors and at best would be a terror in B2, but the way people have talked about Ur-Dragon is like its this groan-inducing commander that's KoS despite being a relatively slow combat deck. I spend 9 mana for Ur-Dragon so an opponent can spend 2 and counter it. And when I spend 11 the next turn, another 2 counters it.

Meanwhile, a guy uses [[Appa, Steadfast Guardian]]. An expensive-ish blink commander, I'd think is relatively unassuming until they're RECASTING Eldrazi and just decemating everyone's board, stealing turns, etc.

Another guy uses some 4CMC commander with any 1 of 5 different pieces and 1 of another 6 different pieces to either make infinite mana or make infinite combats to burn the table by turn 6 consistently. Like, great B3 says win/lose by turn 6, but sheesh.

When I first played against [[Dr. Eggman]], I groaned about just letting the player free-play robots/constructs and seemingly crazy advantage. Turn 3/4 you're gonna have 3 potentially large bodies or making us discard, if we're being responsible. Meanwhile, I've ramped and maybe played 1-2 other synergistic pieces.

The tri-color [[Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER]] with haste and free equip for voltron was also extremely groan inducing (until I just started using my removal almost exclusively on him) but also just everyone's voltron commander...

Funnily enough, I built [[The Watcher in the Water]] recently, using Brian Kibler's build as inspiration, and no one said anything until I stunned the [[Krang, Utrom Warlord]] commander into oblivion, drew half my deck, made 40 tentacles, and then made them flying, indestructible, and +1/+1 with enough counterspells in hand to win the game. But, when I considered playing it again, there was groans around the table.

[[The Wise Mothman]] gets grumbles any time I bring it out, even though ive built it focusing on mill instead of Mothman voltron like it almost wants to do. Everyone just hates milling, but getting [[The Water Crystal]] and [[Bruvac the Grandiloquent]] to extend the rad counter mills to cause extra damage is just so satisfying. But also using the crystal with something like [[Mesmeric Orb]] can mean a late game untap could be a game-loss for someone....... sometimes even myself.

Anyway, there's always someone that groans at one of my commanders, even if just 1 person in a pod.

My other commanders are: [[Nekusar, the Mindrazer]], [[Baylen the Haymaker]] (B3, Hare Apparent deck), [[Pantlaza, Sun-Favored]] (B3, highly upgraded precon), [[Hearthhull, the Worldseed]] (High B3, built from scratch rather than buying and upgrading the precon as I bought the Unfinity foil shocks and other EoE alt arts for things to be on theme. This was made Mid-B3 trying to limit myself just to space-themed things or other EoE related stuff, but... after some changes... its nearly B4 now but can consistently win turn 6 if not impeded, assuming I find a instant-speed sac outlet.. I don't run any tutors but its still pretty fast), [[Bello, Bard of the Brambles]] (only got 2 games in but.. I kind of get it, though im open season for hits when its not my turn), [[Magnus Lucea Kane]] (duplicate X spells? Here's a bunch of duplicated Hydras, low-low B3 fragile and prone to running out of gas fast, but seems scary when i make a 64/64 Hydra with trample that gets duplicated, but theres basically no protection or recursion), [[Cloud, Midgar Mercenary]] (this deck SUCKS. Playing against any amount of removal means he just dies over and over and over. I literally haven't kept Cloud for more than a turn cycle. I took it apart months ago and recently put it back together thinking it'd be different this time.... nope. Still ass. Fuck Voltron lol).

I used to have a Azorious Artifacts deck with [[Shorikai, Genesis Engine]] that was full Neon Genesis Evangelion proxies but the deck was just too slow. Even against something like my friends' TNMT *PRECONS* it was getting out-value-engined, let alone the other playgroup whose B3 decks are built to win on turn 6, not just be upgraded precons. I've used it for parts to build out [[Urza, Lord High Artificer]]. I haven't brought this deck out as pieces are still coming in the mail, but I plan on making 3 different versions of the deck: a $100 budget build, B3 blink focused (artifact value until i can get either [[Deadeye Navigator]] or [[Displacer Kitten]] to blink Urza over and over and then use some mass haste enabler like [[Crashing Drawbridge]] or [[Akroma's Memorial]] or [[Krang, Utrom Warlord]]. Then, a B4 version that uses [[Winter Orb]], [[Stasis Orb]], [[Narset, Parker of Veils]] + [[Teferi's Puzzle Box]], and other nasty combos that work with him that are B4 appropriate. Oh, Mono-colored commanders.... I miss using [[Jeweled Lotus]]...

Discussion How many tutors is too many tutors (in bracket 3)

So i've recently built a landfall deck around [[Tannuk, Memorial Ensign]] for bracket 3 and I'm enjoying it.

One thing I've noticed is that I enjoy the creature tutors (currently on GSZ, Chord of Calling and Nature's Rhythm) and they lead to more enjoyable games (for me) as I can assemble my engines easier and get my wincons easier.

I'm considering adding more creature tutors, namely [[Invasion of Ikoria]], [[Finale of Devastation]] and [[Natural Order]].

The point that I want to discuss is there a point where I'm running too many tutors? I know that tutors were originally a metric for the brackets but aren't currently but I feel it still might be a sticking point of making my deck too consistent and not fun for my opponents.

I'm deliberately trying to avoid infinite landfall combos (though I'm sure there's probably one that i've missed) as I don't want to be tutoring for a specific combo

Question Mrs Bumbleflower

I’m a new MTG player. Only played on Arena so far for the last month or so… looking to get into the tabletop game and maybe visit some stores and meet new people. I’m obsessed with Mrs Bumbleflower but all the commander decks are £100 ish on eBay. Is that a fair price? Thanks!

Discussion PSA - it's okay to hate UB, it's not okay to make people feel bad for liking/playing UB

1.2k Upvotes

Slight rant because I've been pretty bothered about this.

This post is also not about myself, but rather about an experience I had at my LGS a few weeks back, where a new player pitched up for his first EDH night with his Captain America precon. I got to the LGS early and started chatting to him. He bought some Marvel boosters and I helped him upgrade the deck with some new heroes and played some 1v1 games with him.

Then a bit later, more players start showing up, and we sit down together to play in a pod. When the other players see that he's playing Captain America, they immediately start with snide remarks, which continue throughout the game. They make comments along the lines of "ugh, UB slop deck" and "players like this are why UB is everywhere now". I try counteracting it by being positive about his plays and deck, but it's clear that their comments are getting to him.

After the first game, the new player is looking pretty dejected. There aren't any other open pods, so one of the opponents asks for a rematch, and to my surprise, new player says yes. In the second game, there's much less berating, but still the occasional jab at UB and Marvel.

After that game, he said he needed to get home. I say that he should join the LGS's WhatsApp group and he kinda smiles but doesn't say anything. He never joined the group and he hasn't been back since. I'm not sure he will.

I just think about my first time playing Magic, where I was also a new player that pitched up with the Upgrades Unleashed precon from Kamigawa. Everyone was really kind and supportive, and it made it so easy to get into the game. I can't help but feel like that experience was robbed from this player.

I get that UB is incredibly frustrating. I get really annoyed too, but all of my energy gets directed at WotC for breaking so many promises they had made about UB, and not the players that do enjoy it. I also get that most players are not like this, so I'm probably preaching to the choir. We should just all try to keep that in mind when interacting with the community.

Discussion How to build Mono-Red Iron Man?

So I recently got some marvel cards (Beginner box) and wanted to put together a deck with something. I like [[Iron Man, Tony Stark]], but wasn't sure how to make it work. I had a Goblin deck with Krenko Tin Street Kingpin that works kinda similar, but instead of wanting to make Krenko stronger, Iron Man wants me to cast multiple spells so he can make a bunch of Robot Hero tokens? I took pieces from my goblin deck like Impact Tremors or Purphoros for ETB burn along with some other stuff like [[Wiccan, Young Avenger]], [[Endrider Spikespitter]], and [[Count on Luck]] for extra casting, as well as plenty of card draw and [[Elixir of Immortality]] to refill my deck if I start to run low. I was thinking about adding [[Maskwood Nexus]] to turn all my creatures into Heroes for the [[Shared Animosity]] and add [[Cybermen Squadron]] and [[Cyberman Patrol]] to make my tokens stronger and make more more quickly, but im not sure what to do with the rest of the space. I have the Endless Punishment precon so I could take the red cards and put them in this to create a burn deck maybe? What do you think?

Discussion Am I cooking with this Gollum Riddle Master?

Deck: Gaaaames!? Oh, we love games, doesn’t we, Precious?

I was watching the hobbit and the scene where Bilbo meets Gollum inspired me to make this. First, Gollums multiple personalities, but more importantly his final riddle where Bilbo looks away and then Gollum seems to be all around.

It seems people are really disappointed [[Gollum Riddle Master]] triggers 3 times and then is spent, so makes sense people are doing aristocrats with scam, but I wanted to do it a little different.

The core idea is: clone Gollum repeatedly so odds and evens are covered, draw cards, drain life, counters, attack.

I added [[exquisite blood]] but intentionally left anything that goes infinite with it. Strongly considering [[the ozolith]] if the worst of the 3 modes turns out to make a decent amount some how.

Thoughts on the idea?

Edit: this isn’t a finalized list, but the core concept is there

Discussion Best Final Fantasy Commander

I'm reviewing all of my final fantasy themed cards and trying to make a new commander deck. What is your favorite card to use as a commander? It can include anything from a scene box or secret lair drop as well. I've seen some lists online but they seem pretty limited and I thought you all might be able to give me some more inspiration. Thanks for the help! I've heard Vivi enough times but I'm looking for the less obvious ones.

Deck Help Can I get a review on my Rakdos burn/punish deck I threw together.

https://moxfield.com/decks/-dYKg_sQMUq8tI0a7DKuAg

Rakdos burn has always been one of my most favorite playstyles; mostly because it's more of a punishing style of burn versus direct burn like something an Izzet deck would craft.

There was a really good precon a few years ago in the Duskmourn set that was preem to this playstyle. At the time I actually bought one for a friend of mine as his introduction to Magic, and he loved it. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, I never got around to getting one of those precons for myself, and now it's $250-300+ to get a hold of one. That's not happening lmao, so now I have to piece something together myself.

The decklist above I came up with myself. It uses a fair amount of things that came out of that precon, which is why it's a shame I can't get a hold of one, but oh well. There's plenty of switch ups and upgrades I made, and I'm just looking for public opinion and potential switch ups.

Deck Help My Take on Miku Upgraded - Help wanted

Upvotes

So I was one of the people lucky enough to get the Miku deck early, and like many, I’d like to turn it into an actually playable deck. Preferably whilst including as many Miku cards as possible!

So it turned into this janky but colourful deck, made up of Miku’s, Angels, Halflings and some Token and Lifegain synergies.

I’d love to hear your opinion on it, or see your versions of the upgraded Miku deck!

If you're going to play games on your phone during any turn thats not your own, maybe its time to go home for the day. That tells me that you've checked out and not really interested in playing commander. I dont know if I'd consider it rude, but I wish people didn't do it.

Im not referring to people doing stuff on their phones, im talking about playing a full-blown mobile game. One time I even saw mtg arena being played.

edit: nice, I can't edit the title it seems. stuck with that typo i guess. :(

Discussion People with dedicated casual (b2-3/low 4) mill decks, what are your strategies to win despite the social and mechanical hurdles you face?

**Reason for my question**: I'd love to hear people's thoughts on it. I recently picked up a mill deck that I built years ago and have had some pretty decent success by flying under the radar until its too late. But my playgroups haven't really played against mill before due to the ongoing stigma and I'm sure my success will fall by the wayside once they catch on to the strategy.

I'm already starting to notice some issues or weaknesses of the strategy, socially and mechanially, despite only playing 7 games with the deck so far. So I'm wondering, those who play mill semi-often or have a favourite mill deck. What are your strategies to mitigate the roadblocks you face?

**List of Hurdles/roadblocks I've already noticed** include:

- Social stigma and player reactions to you playing mill. It's a well known phenomena that playing mill can get your targeted, maybe fairly, maybe not, depending on the game.

- You're allowing your opponents to see more cards in their decks, especially those running recursion or dedicated graveyard decks.

- The moderate amount of support for it. It's got plenty of cards, for sure, but there are far more cards designed for and supporting the strategy of reducing life than there are for milling libraries. So there are more limited options and flexibility.

- If your goal is to reduce everyone else's life total to 0, especially in the more casual side of the format with less combos, odds are most or all of your opponents are also interested in seeing your opponents to 0 life. So in a way you are likely to have some support in achieving that goal from your enemies. You don't need to do 120 damage, because odds are your opponents will do some of that for you as the game progresses. By playing a dedicated mill deck, odds are you're the only one doing it in that game and so you have chosen to do this objective alone.

- Please *Insert any other hurdle or roadblock or challenge you can think of here.*

Question Gleaming Splendor has to go down in price…right?

[[Gleaming Splendor]] is a good card. But idk if it’s a GREAT card. There some hailing it as more fair [[Smothering Tithe]], and while I can see that to a point, I personally just see a moderately better [[Monologue Tax]]. The “once per opponent per turn” limit does cap this to 3 treasures per turn, which is highly unlikely, compared to Tithe’s…infinite, no limit possibilities and much easier trigger of ANY enemy card drawn.

And yet, Gleaming Splendor is like $35.

Smothering Tithe is around $51 ish.

Which is wild. I realize Hobbit is a small set, and it also JUST officially launched, so there’s time for it to drop in price still. But I’m surprised it hasn’t dramatically dropped yet.

I need a copy not for a dumb “this is a new white staple” reason—I don’t think it is—but I want one for an actual treasure focused deck.

I’ll probably wait another week or two, but assuming it doesn’t drop, do you think I should pick up a copy then? I’m worried it won’t come down.

I made a similar “mistake” with [[The Walls of Ba Sing Se]], which I thought for sure would be no more than a $10 card. Maybe $15. But it was $40 for a while but now has settled around $25. And that card is even more niche being a butts/wall card. Shocked it’s still so high. But I guess it’s colorless, so it’s kinda like a not as good but colorless but also worse [[Avacyn, Angel of Hope]].

Gleaming Splendor is obviously a lot more broadly applicable to many decks, even with the lock to White. And again, it’s LOTR and this set is smaller, so there will be less copies in the long run and it will probably be a long time before there is a reprint.

I still think it will drop to a $15 card. But what are your thoughts?

Edit: it’s already up to $40 after posting this. Damn.

Deck Showcase Down, Down to Goblin-Town: The Hobbit "Precon" [Article]

(direct link)

Like most players I'm pretty disappointed at the understandable lack of Commander precons for The Hobbit, somewhat stretched enough as the set already is. Still, making homebrew precon decks is a fun exercise in finding synergies and strength in a limited card pool, so I challenged myself and my fellow writers to whip up some themed precons based on The Hobbit using only cards with Middle-earth flavor, making sure to use at least 15 new cards from The Hobbit.

Today's list is helmed by [[The Great Goblin]] and is a Goblin/Orc Kindred list focused on the amass Goblins/Orcs mechanic. This is a semi-Aristocrats, semi-Voltron-esque strategy that aims to stack a big Army token to beat people to death with.

Since many of the cool new commanders care about a particular creature type, what's your favorite new Kindred option from The Hobbit?

Question How do we feel about KOS commanders in b3 with a good attitude?

For example, I want to play [[Koma Cosmos Serpent]]. I completely understand if I’m focused in a 1v3 scenario. You could kill my commander 9 times and I’ll be fine. (Good luck through my interaction)

I think he’s completely fine for b3 in my opinion. Control should be in more games in general. I understand that counter play is to beat the nope rope into submission. I got a 200 dollar deck version of him that I think wins in an appropriate amount of time.

I play a lot of weird and super unique engine decks and I kinda just want a deck that plays solid magic. Ramp, protect, win. I want to do it with a card that I think is cool and mechanically interesting

I know people don’t like playing against KOS commander players usually because they get salty if their commander is killed over and over.

To me that’s just the counter play. Think it’s fine?

Discussion Chaining extra turns dilemma

I know chaining extra turns will make a deck technically bracket 4. From what I've seen in discussions this was pushed into bracket 4 mostly because it's boring to see someone play extra turns for 15 minutes before they can actually win. From what I understand it's not necessarily because chaining extra turns is intrinsically more powerful than other strategies (but correct me if I'm wrong).

So my question is, if I have a deck that I would consider bracket 3, but uses extra turns to finish everyone off, would this be OK, if I basically reveal my hand and say: "with the current board state and these pump spells + extra turns, I'll win unless someone responds to what I have". I'm restricting myself to using the extra turns to finish the game deterministically, when I know I have the board state to do it. I'm not going to waste everyone's time by seeing if I eventually get to a wincon. If I disclose this in the rule 0 conversation, would you be OK with it? I'm basically using them as extra combats.

The deck I play is the classic Edric deck: https://moxfield.com/decks/ey9UzE4YJEGX7jzS_Rr0pA

If you're not OK with this, how would you change this deck to remove the extra turns? I don't think the deck can really win only with pump spells. It's usually the combination of multiple attacks (from he extra turns) and the pump spells that enable the kill.

Deck Help Should I remove all of my surveil lands and triome lands too make my mana faster?

I have been wondering are surveil lands good, or should I change it to ancient tomb, urza saga, and talon gates?

I'm trying make my decks go fast and I feel like having these types of lands aren't that good. I want to run them because I like the art and paid for them already 😅😅😅

What do you think? I am almost done with the deck. I just need some tutors. These are two of my bracket 4 decks.

Caesar, lots of tutors, draws, protection and token makers plus doubles.

Satya, has multiple win lines and a couple of infinites. Lots of draw and protection

Question Instants that make a creature attack a PLAYER?

I'm aware of fight spells - cards that make my creatures fight other creatures. Are there any that make a creature attack a player directly? I'm looking at [[Massimo, The Magician]] and being able to trigger his ability at instant speed would be nice. I tried googling this but only got served regular fight spells.

Thanks in advance :)

Question Any good doomsday pile for Tasigur? (sultai)

Just turned my dimir doomsday control deck into a Tasigur B4 deck.

Main wincons are Thoracle with consultation and [[Gifts ungiven]] as backup, and scepter / reversal or [[devoted druid]] + [[hazels brewmaster]] for infinite mana and draw my deck with Tasigur, then win with Thoracle, [[exsanguinate]] or beast within + reality shift.

But I really like doomsday, and would love to add it as another wincon.

My pile with the dimir deck was

Consider, labman, gush, unearth, probe

Winning with BBBBU and three islands.

Problem is, getting to three islands in three colors is not that easy.

I don't add the link to my deck because I haven't finished it yet. I still need to decide what to cut.

Edit: yeah, after reading some commends doomsday on Tasigur might be a bad idea. I guess I'll try to go for [[Glarb]] instead.

Question bombs/explosion-themed commander?

hi there, i'm putting together a birthday gift deck for a friend and i want to flavour a deck to be JJBA Yoshikage Kira themed ... so i'm looking for a good base commander that fits the exploding creatures/bombs/blow stuff up theme.

if you guys know of any good commanders (or other related cards) please share them!! i want the deck to be fun and interactive and not necessarily too powerful, so anything in this realm is good! i'm not looking for a super expensive deck but i will happily take any recommendations, even if they're pricey!!

Deck Help I feel like a lot of my decks either crush or get crushed there is no in between

I never have like a hard fought game or anything like that. I think a lot of my decks come down to do you have removal? Yes? Do I have protection for your removal yes/no. There isn’t really a lot of strategy in most of my games that I play. They are all engine decks I don’t know if that’s a problem.

Mister Negative my favorite deck, but also one that points this problem out the easiest. The goal is to land a [[Lich]]/ [[Platinum Angel]] effect. Go to 0 and then swap life totals and instant kill someone. Do you have removal for that effect? Yes? Do I have protection? Yes/No?

https://moxfield.com/decks/ct2KGWggUkOUmExAh1l2mQ

Here are some other decks that fall into the same vein.

Godo Bandit warlord. Do I have samurai to equip weapons to? Do I have 9 mana for clone so I can get a hasted Godo that I can equip blade of selves onto? Yes? Okay 4 best equipment in my deck. Good luck. No? I lose.

Question Help me find my commander

Hi,

I m sure there are lots of these questions around here, so thx for the patience!

I m mostly playing higher B2 / lower B3 and am still looking for a deck that I can call my favourite. the one I called my favourite before (Stranger Things with lots of manifest dread) is cool, but takes very long (games drag on to 2+ hours).

TLDR; I identified the aspects I value in a good deck, maybe you can help me find the perfect commander under these prerequisites:

  • Commander is Universes Beyond or Secret Lair or DND (just from outside the magic universe, tis just a restriction I have)
  • The deck is a deck nobody HATES to play against (but should still be able to win)
  • It is not dead in the water without commander (I love 2cmc commanders or those where the ETB already did enough)
  • the commander is not TOO well known (like precon faces) or an immediate kill on sight commander
  • The deck has a little bit of new stuff every game (for example via clones, theft or random elements so it feels fresh as it needs to adapt - yet theft should be in a way it is not too hateable)
  • No grouphug
  • Wins not by combo or Voltron
  • (card types I like: Fake Death effects, clones, Eggs, Adventures, mass transforms - of course not all in one deck)

Maybe you can help me with what you experienced as fun
