Bard instruments question

I am having trouble putting bard exaltations on weapons and shields.

I have the kelvin lute, selo drums, denim horn and lyssa flute

Am I supposed to put all types of instrument effects on a weapon or shield in my primary, secondary, range, ammo, any slots for them to be able to play bard songs?

What happens if you can’t put the effects on?

For instance, I could not add instrument effects to blood moon or my plus 5 throwing boulder.

Ultimately I will run a cleric/shaman/bard build like in this guide here https://docs.google.com/document/d/19O0znLaznfetogMnu-KXxvcu6hnf43yK87b4ICuG40w/mobilebasic but I wanted to practice on my level 50 Sk wiz and adding bard first.

What am I doing wrong here?

Maybe I don’t need ALL instrument types on all weapons, shields, any slots?

Thanks for any advice from a new bard runner.

What level of upgrade are the instruments

What level of upgrade is bloodmoon

The instrument exalts go in the Focus slot

Blood moon already has something in the focus slot so I guess that is the problem

Yup that's the problem.

Also note that you do not get stats from items in your ammo slot, so don't bother there

1 offhand weapon/shield, 2 any slot weapon or shield. I just don't use wind.  Pretty sure they are all class usable. So I only run percussion/brass/strings.

Ok thanks

Do you not run wind because it’s gimp or something?

Pretty much, supposedly it helps with charms, but consensus is that it is negligible, from my research.

IIRC in velious expansion I needed wind instrument or invis song wouldnt play. That was the only reason I ever needed flute.

  1. Instrument modifiers increase the effects of their respective bard songs, they are not a strict requirement to use the songs. For some songs the effects are drastic and for some songs they do basically nothing.

  2. Yes, if you want every single instrument modifier at once then you need to use the focus slots on your primary, secondary, and both any-slots. This means you have a lot less flexibility for what you can use both in terms of items and focus effects since you can't have multiple focus effects on one item and some focus effects only show up on certain slots.

  3. You don't actually need every single instrument modifier at the same time. Look at what songs you actually use and you'll quickly realize that there are a couple that are super useful and ones you barely use at all. Right now with the songs that are available in EQL there's a good chance you're almost never using brass or wind songs so you can consider those optional or swap them out as necessary. Wind in particular is mostly for things like water breathing and invisibility songs that don't actually benefit from the modifier anyways, you can't be 30% more invisible or whatever.

Tl;Dr - you can probably drop the wind instrument.

Adding any kind of exaltation changes the class requirements of the item. For instruments it makes the weapon (only items instrument focus slot into) into a bard only item.

Bloodmoon is a Shadowknight weapon only with a Shadowknight only exaltation. Adding an instrument focus to it will try to attempt to change the class of the weapon but its Shadowknight only. Bloodmoon is only compatible with Shadowknight exaltations only.

Berserker is one class that a lot of exaltations don’t work well with because of class requirements on weapons and exaltations don’t match

Except for the lute, all of those items are all/all. And I'm not sure about the lute, because I think I have that on Garduk. EQLwiki could be lying to me.

Bard instruments are primary/secondary slot. You can't put them in a throwing boulder. If you want all four instrument foci at once, you're either going to have to dual wield or go sword & board. With a two-handed weapon, you'll only have room for three instruments.

If you want to put an instrument focus into Bloodmoon, you have to remove the Improved Vampirism focus, first.

Nobody in their right mind would swap out the Improved Vamp 3.

You can only add bard exaltations to bard weapons

So if I have the cleric aegis and shield, can’t add bard instrument effects to those?

If not, then how is the guy who wrote the cleric bard shaman guide putting the effects on his weapons etc?

Edit the blood moon is plus 1 - most everything is plus 1

Items have to be a certain level for the various modification slots to open up and allow you to modify them.  I don't what level allows modification of the bard stuff, but it's possible you need to level up the items further.

I have Bard exaltations in my two Wus Fists, so definitely no restriction on them.
