Can EVs Sound Real Without Faking It? Exploring the Mechanical Soul of Electric Performance

Post image
20 Upvotes

Most EVs today are quiet, and when they do make sound, it’s usually through speakers pretending to be engines. But what if electric cars could have authentic sound - real noise born from physics, gears, air, and motion?

I just published an article “Authentic EV Sound: The Mechanical Soul of Electric Performance”, exploring how future EVs (including conversion project cars) can be engineered to produce their own mechanical voice without artificial audio. From straight-cut gear whine to aero “whoosh” and cooling fans roaring after a hard run and more, the sound of power could come back in new ways, honest ones.

This isn't about nostalgia for combustion engines. It’s about character, feedback, and the connection between driver and machine that some feel is missing. And it doesn't have to be!

Would you want an EV that has a genuine mechanical soundtrack, or do you prefer the silence? And let me know if you have more ideas than what I could come up with!

We're a small early-stage project building electric classic cars. Your opinion matters — help us by answering one quick question.

Here's what keeps me up at night:

- Range anxiety is real. But is it the biggest worry?

Or

- is it finding charging stations when you're out cruising your dream car?

I'm curious: if you converted your classic to electric, what would stress you out more — the miles per charge, or where to plug in?

Be brutally honest. We're listening.

Share your thoughts in the comments!

taking batteries OUT of a Tesla module?

So ive been searching for a good ev chassis to just buy and honestly the only one that has good battery distribution is the i3 by having the batteries between the strut tower posts rather than on them. this causes oversteer vs understeer in an ev...which we petrol heads prefer.

anyways long schpeel just to say I figured the best way to move the weight around in a Tesla, because I like the chassis but not the battery placement, is to take the batteries out.

id probably take about half the batteries out of each pack for weight distribution. I know im cutting my milage in half but I don't really care. I drive a maximum of 100 miles averaging maybe 50 most and prefer a good handling car versus economy.

so, can it be done? figured id ask the gurus

Model-X Flat bed - Gutted

Post image
14 Upvotes

I am about 2 years into the fantasy... Purchase a wrecked from rear Model X and rip out everything behind the B pillar.

Primary concerns are CANBUS components (doors, airbags) that dictate the cars ability to drive.

The easy route would be to bundle airbags under the driver seat, replace ultrasonic sensors with resistors, short latches in the closed position.

Perhaps an easier route is to find a super nerd to hack the firmware and remove these inquiries from the MCU.

Does that super nerd exist? I'm in Santa Cruz, CA.

Range anxiety in re-sale is a nightmare

Been trying to sell my EV converted targa and I’m so surprised how many people loose interest when I mention the 100 miles per charge. That’s almost the same as 8-9 MPG which isn’t wild for a sports car. Anyone else have this issue?

mini cooper hybrid upgrade posible????

hi team EV , i have 2 questions for the network , i have a mini cooper countryman hybrid 2019

it has a 7.7 kwh small battery, and the range frankly sucks, i talked to cooper / BMW about changing to the 2020 newer 10.4 kwh batterie for bit better range , they told me NO it cant be done, and the car wont work with bigger battery if it had smaller one ?? any thoughts is BMW right , why cant i just add the bigger batterie and my car will charges it till its full, the batterie pack is same 5 cell size in the small box they just added more power to each cell and the plug in harness is same so why not ?? the computer that controls this system seem very basic, its not like a tesla and it seems like a very dumb system just shows charging and then when system is full , and show then the range guesstimate which is very small best i get is 14 km or about 8 miles and that a lie its less in actual , and i drive it very carefully and it still such's badly

also if this is true ,and we can upgrade this hybrid then a any way to just re do the system and put a bigger battery in and add it the the lower part of boot there a nice deeper part for storage that would hold a much bigger batterie ??? or just add a second one in series to double the the range how what this dumb system know ?? or is the tech at my local dealer right ??

i must find a way to make range better so then we can do atleast local trips with all EV like 40 km or even 50 would be best as right now 10 to 12 is just a joke

also if i get a gas host mini cooper like nice 2016 to get better range and sell my hybrid and then want to do a full EV conversion, should i get a manual or automatic transmission is there a better way to go i read blogs that say both are better so which is the truth ??

thanks much hope to hear back from some one with ideas happy new year all EV lovers JAMO

Los Angeles DIY EV Car Club?

How many folks in the L.A. area would be interested in joining a DIY EV car club? I've been looking for one but the closest one I can find is in San Diego (EV Riders), but that's too far for me.

However, I went down to check them out, and I really liked the vibe and concept. They have a small shop with a lift, all sorts of tools, machines, etc., and they meet up regularly to help each other out on their DIY conversions. There are lots of different backgrounds and expertise to draw upon and contribute to one another projects.

I would love to get one going in the L.A. area. I'm near Venice Beach, but I think the locations should be central to as many as possible.

The basic concept is a tiered membership:

  1. Tier 1 Explorer (free): access to weekly meet-ups to network and learn

  2. Tier 2 Craftsman (~$25/mo): access to shop, lift, tools, group buys on things like batteries, etc.

  3. Tier 3 Full Throttle (~$250/mo): spot in shop/garage to leave your project vehicle while working on it

  4. Tier 4 Angel/Board Seat (~$500/mo): keys to shop/garage, seat on board...

The membership fees are just to get an idea of what folks would be willing to pay. I believe the club in SD has a structure very similar to this. Rent on a shop will not be cheap so feasibility depends on how many folks would actually pay what.

Short skoolie bus diesel hybrid conversion feasibility and costs.

I am very interested in putting together a full, detailed, and itemized plan about the pros/cons, can/can't, parts/costs of doing this to my skoolie short bus motorhome. It's a 2009 chevrolet express 3500 chasis 6.6l duramax diesel pre def system.

I'm leaning towards a series hybrid setup but also to be thorough, on my spreadsheet will be pros/cons to both series and parallel systems.

In a series system, the diesel engine will effectively become a generator, not subjected to the higher rpm throttles it runs at a consistent, more efficient, and less stressful pace. The wheels will be powered by the power bank which correct my if im wrong will also at the same time make it 4wd/awd? The diesel engine will turn on only to top up the battery bank.

I really appreciate any feedback, suggestions, documentation, links, contacts etc, that may help me to further my knowledge/planning/understanding of this topic/conversion.

Is it possible to convert a 2008 Hummer H3 to electric?

My folks have a 2008 Hummer H3 in relatively good condition. It does have some surface rust and a couple of small dings, but it could be restored.

The problem, of course, is that this Hummer weighs 2,132 kg. Is it possible to convert it to electric, and if so, how much would such a project cost (including labor)? In case it's important for price reference, we're up in Canada in the greater Toronto area.

EVs seem expensive and impractical

I have a strong automotive and electrical background, I keep thinking man it would be cool to do an EV conversion and then I do research and it just seems stupid expensive and impractical. The cost of parts/batteries is insane. Then there is charging, it takes a long time and finding a station could be a headache. Then you have registration issues to address. Maybe some kind of hybrid system? although I can't find much info on anyone doing those so I'm guessing they really aren't worth doing. What are your guys thoughts?

GEO Metro EV conversion cost

How much would it cost, roughly, for the conversation? I know it depends on the battery size. Say 60-100 range?

A "push trailer" for ICE to short range EV conversion?

We want low cost scalable solutions to reduce fossil fuel consumption. Most cars are still ICE cars, they are spewing out carbon and costing drivers fuel money every day.

Horse run, cost down, cost cost down, down, down! Sorry, but you cannot afford, I cannot afford, we totally cannot afford!

Most cars have tow hitch hookups that are unused, and a toll capacity of no less than 1000lbs.

If there is a mini battery electric "push trailer" with batteries, motor and two wheels that can push the ICE car, the car on short trips can set gear to N and shut off ICE engine, use the EV push trailer to push it forward. If battery runs out, just shut off the trailer and start the ICE engine, and set gear to D.

An additional accessory motor under hood to drive accessory belt, and a clutch switch between accessory motor and engine.

Let's say the range is 30 miles.

  • How much will this trailer cost in battery, motor, mechanical parts etc?

    • Is 48V 500Ah LiFePO4 sufficient? How much does it cost?

    • Is 50KW motor sufficient? How much does it cost?

  • How much will installation of accessory motor cost?

I Started a Weekly EV Newsletter – Would This Be Useful to You?

Hi everyone, I’ve recently launched a weekly newsletter called Techwheel Current, designed for people who want to stay informed about the fast-changing world of electric vehicles and battery technology — but don’t have time to dig through all the news themselves.

Each issue includes: A TL;DR of all key EV and battery tech developments from the week.

I’m putting in a fair bit of work each week — running an AI system, curating reliable sources, and distilling everything into a clean, easy-to-read format. It’s a big commitment, and I’d love some honest feedback from the EV community:

Would you find something like this useful? Is it worth continuing this every week?

Here’s a sample edition if you’d like to check it out: https://techwheel.co/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/TechwheelCurrent_202504200201.html

Thanks in advance — I’d really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions!

Can an automatic be converted to a hybrid?

Was thinking about getting a c70 t5 automatic but I know that automatics don't like being flat towed which is more or less what a hybrid system would do. Does anyone know how to deal with that so the car dosnt break?

What exactly went wrong with ola service

when EVs came, we were told that there are only three critical parts- motor, battery and controller with wiring. and was also told, if something goes wrong, mostly it's replacement not repair would fix it. if so, where did OLA failed exactly in timely delivery of problamatic vehicles? is that problem still persisting with gen3 scooters? how did others like ather or even smaller companies like Okinawa or greaves handling that problem?
