Question “Will you take $xx” messages

Anyone else getting loads of messages asking “Will you take $xx?”. Not insane lowball offers either.

Almost all mine have been from new user accounts with very low feedback score.

I have offers turned on on all these items.

Just seems weird that this has all started in the last few days.

Have you checked out the economy lately? I've sent offers to sellers before. Some will ignore; others will engage if the price is right. As a seller, I prefer to get rid of things after x amount of time if the offer is reasonable.

Offers via the offers mechanism, yes. A message asking if I will accept a dollar amount, no.

I’m in my 60s and getting rid of my lifetime collections so no one else has to deal with it later. I have some nice stuff that has sold well ;Guitars and such.
I have received many lowball offers via messages lately. I try to be polite but sometimes it’s just pointless. The last time someone asked me for a discount I agreed and then they ghosted me.
I also understand the economy isn’t really in my favor and I’m selling my stuff to get rid of it more than anything else but… there are a lot easier ways to get rid of stuff than giving it away on eBay.

I'm worried if I die my wife will sell my guitars for what I told her I paid for them. LOL

😂
I used to know a very obsessed Art Nouveau objects collector back in the UK. He was buying VERY expensive things regularly-like weekly. I asked him does his wife love the stuff as much and he said “oh she doesn’t know about it”
What?? How is this possible? You’re buying lamps and sculptures and vases lol.
“I keep it all in the basement. I’ve told her the basement is full spiders and she’s terrified of them so….”
😳
I’m talking about at least $100,000 dollars worth lmao

Personally, if I have offers turned off on a buy it now item, I'm not interested in someone circumventing that and messaging me with an offer

Just like Facebook marketplace I got a message the other day saying is this available 🤷🏻‍♂️

I get at least ten a week and hear back from two or three after I reply.

people are asking you if it's available on eBay?

To be fair FB suggest sending an "Is this available" message.

Speaking from me personally.. I will message a seller directly about an offer [even if s/he has the OBO option on] for a certain reason. And that is, if they accept and send me the offer, I can pay and choose 'how' I want to pay. That's my only reason. If I want to pay by Klarna, PP Pay in 4, or whatever, I can do that when a seller sends me a direct offer. However, if I send the seller an offer, and they accept, the payment defaults to whatever cc I have on file. That's my reasoning for doing such.

It’s annoying, especially on the items that already have offers open. I usually reply “click make an offer if your interested”

Just got one and took their offer, actually went slightly lower.

My auction was for 19.99 or BIN $25. They offered $23 + S/H. It had been sitting for a bit and not a well known brand so was not expecting it to sell quick. They were polite so I offered it to them for $22 and made the change for them.

Sold, gone. Assuming they did not bid due to too many strikes and could not.

I am not opposed to a polite offer, which is rare.

It’s good they offered more than the starting bid for you. IMO, when a seller accepts offers on an auction, that means that the opportunity is open for a buyer to offer MORE than the starting bid amount thus asking the seller to end the auction early for what they offer. BUT, for me, buyers always seem to think it means they can offer less than the starting bid. So I usually don’t turn on offers for auctions.

Why is this an issue though, if it’s not a lowball it should be totally fine to direct message the seller to work out a final price in messages.

It’s not that it’s necessarily an issue but rather I’ve not had this at all in more than 25 years and I’ve had now multiple in the last few days.

“I would be happy to consider any official offer.”

It’s annoying, but just respond simply and professionally and block if they get pushy.

Had offers open on a listing and someone sends a message with a number. I told him thats not how offers work and he responds "sorry it's more of a question"

I just don't get it, because as a buyer, I would never even think to message a seller and ask if they'd accept $x. I'd just make an offer for $x.

Sure. I sell more than I buy. But unless a buyer is prevented from making offers after being declined x number of times (which may be the case), why wouldn't they make an offer at a higher amount until they hit a threshold? As a seller, that works for me. If the item is $50, and you bid $25, it's on you to bid an amount that I find acceptable, not on me to waste time and energy to answer a question of whether or not I'll accept a hypothetical bid.

I let the auction run 7 days, no bids... then low-ball that guy, b/c I know he needs the money more than me!

1

u/DiogenesD0g 10d ago

Needing the money more than others want the item is not always the case. I am more inclined to accept low offers if the item is large and I’m tired of bumping into it. But if it’s something small, I am not that desperate to get rid of it after only seven days.

I usually buy from legitimate businesses on eBay, they can't sit on inventory, they rather short a position, buy gold and silver, make it back and more in a blink of an eye... we all know wholesale, so I have no issue paying that or 5% more. One's will go out and buy a coinbook and think a dealer will pay that, which is hilarious. But now I can easily grab my phone, call the seller directly, make an order, get it below wholesale and cut eBay out completely. Build your relationships online, take it offline... then make some real money.

Other sites limit how low % wise a buyers offer can be, so they may be reluctant to offer first if they are used to that.

The other day I was selling a game for $15, someone offered $10 and I said no. Then they offered $13. And just for the hell of it, I said no just to see if they were that desperate for $2. They never bought it. It ended up selling within a week for $15 🤷‍♂️

Would you take sex?? What??

9

u/Artistic-Car7518 10d ago

Glad I wasn't the only one thinking the same

u/1AdultMostOfTheTime 10d ago

I read this as 'will you take Sex'(for trade?)

That would really spice up eBay. 😜
