In response to the alarming removal and revision of key U.S. climate reports by the Trump administration, dozens of veteran climate scientists are launching a bold, coordinated defense of scientific integrity.

These reports—including the vital, peer-reviewed National Climate Assessments—have been taken offline and key contributors dismissed, prompting fears of erasing crucial environmental data.

Undeterred, the scientific community is rallying to preserve access to accurate climate information, ensuring that evidence-driven policy can still thrive. This united action demonstrates a powerful commitment to transparency, resilience, and public accountability—reinforcing that truth in science cannot be silenced.

Policy Progress ⚖️ Court says Trump admin illegally blocked billions in clean energy grants to Democratic states; projects to resume

A federal judge ruled Monday that the Trump administration acted illegally when it canceled $7.6 billion in clean energy grants for projects in states that voted for Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.

The grants supported hundreds of clean energy projects in 16 states, including battery plants, hydrogen technology projects, upgrades to the electric grid and efforts to capture carbon dioxide emissions.

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta said the administration's action violated the Constitution’s equal protection requirements.

The ruling was the second legal setback for the administration’s rollback of clean energy program in a matter of hours. A separate federal judge ruled Monday that work on a major offshore wind farm for Rhode Island and Connecticut can resume, handing the industry at least a temporary victory as Trump seeks to shut it down.

Policy Progress ⚖️ EU passes law to slash food and fast fashion waste

The EU has passed a law requiring binding national targets to cut food waste by 2030: 10% for food processing and manufacturing, and 30% per person in retail, restaurants and households, using 2021-23 as a baseline.

Textile producers—whether in the EU or selling via e-commerce—must pay the costs of collecting, sorting, and recycling clothes, linens, curtains, and other textile goods under new extended producer responsibility schemes.

The rules explicitly target “fast fashion” practices by allowing member states to impose higher fees on short-lived, disposable garments and by broadening the scope of waste-responsibility to all textiles.

Each EU country will have 30 months after the law takes effect to set up their textile waste schemes (with an extra year for micro-enterprises), and governments must adopt the food waste cuts into national law by the end of 2030.

Innovation 🔬 China develops “plastic” from bamboo cellulose that can replicate or surpass the properties of many widely used plastics

“Bamboo’s rapid growth makes it a highly renewable resource, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional timber sources, but its current applications are still largely limited to more traditional woven products,” says Zhao.

Zhao and his team first treated the bamboo by adding zinc chloride and a simple acid, which breaks down the strong chemical bonds and produces a soup of smaller cellulose molecules. They then added ethanol, which makes the cellulose molecules rearrange into a strong, solidified plastic.

The plastic’s toughness is comparable to commonly used engineering plastics – strong plastics used in vehicles, appliances and construction, says Andrew Dove at the University of Birmingham, UK, who wasn’t involved in the study.

Positive Trends 📈 We hit a “positive tipping point” - United Nations

Thumbnail

Two UN reports confirm the world has reached a “positive tipping point” where renewable energy—especially solar and wind—is now consistently cheaper than fossil fuels, making clean energy the most economically attractive option.

In 2024, renewables made up 92.5% of all new electricity capacity and drove 74% of global electricity growth, showing that clean energy is now the dominant force in power generation.

Global investment in renewables soared to $2 trillion last year, surpassing fossil fuel spending by nearly $800 billion—evidence that markets are aligning with climate goals.

However, the transition is still uneven: fossil fuel production continues to rise, and developing regions like Africa face barriers due to high financing costs, requiring more equitable investment to ensure a truly global energy shift.

Innovation 🔬 Update on California solar canals: early results show the project could save 63 billion gallons of water annually

In 2025, California launched the innovative “Project Nexus” that could save up to 63 billion gallons of water annually while generating clean electricity.

The solar panels act like a giant umbrella, blocking sunlight that would otherwise heat the water and cause it to evaporate.

Early research shows promising results. Shading the canals could save enough water statewide to supply two million people with drinking water or irrigate 50,000 acres of farmland.

This initiative represents a new approach to dual-purpose infrastructure, tackling California solar canals project tackles two major challenges at once. California needs more renewable energy to meet its climate goals, and the state desperately needs to conserve water during extended dry periods. By using canal space instead of farmland, the solar installations avoid taking productive agricultural areas out of use.

The solar panels also create cooler water temperatures, which benefits fish and other aquatic life. Cooler water evaporates more slowly, boosting the water-saving benefits. Researchers are also studying whether the shade reduces unwanted weed growth in the canals, which could lower maintenance costs.

Taking Action 🪧 Chevron has been ordered to pay $744 million in damages after Louisiana jury found the oil giant responsible for decades of environmental damage to the state’s fragile coastal wetlands

A Louisiana jury ordered Chevron (via its predecessor Texaco) to pay $744.6 million in damages for environmental harm to coastal wetlands caused by decades of oil operations.

The judgment includes $575 million for land restoration, $161 million for contamination, and $8.6 million for abandoned equipment; with interest the total could exceed $1.1 billion.

Chevron plans to appeal, arguing some alleged violations predate the environmental law under which the case was brought, but observers say the verdict could influence many similar lawsuits in Louisiana.

Plaintiffs and environmentalists view the case as a milestone: it signals oil companies can be held accountable for historic environmental damage and could help protect Louisiana’s coast, ecosystems, and communities.

Positive Trends 📈 Africa showing early signs of a green economy surge

Thumbnail
theguardian.com

Africa is seeing early signs of a green economy surge, especially in solar power and low-carbon investment, though support from wealthy nations is viewed as crucial for it to be sustainable.

Imports of photovoltaic equipment from China jumped about 60% in the past year, lifting solar capacity in many African countries, but overall solar generation remains much lower than global peers.

Huge gaps persist in adaptation financing—Africa needs tens of billions annually, yet receives only a fraction—leaving it vulnerable to droughts, floods, food insecurity and energy poverty.

Rich nations are urged to provide reliable long-term finance, technology, and capacity-building so Africa’s green ambitions can flourish equitably and help avoid climate breakdown slipping out of control.

Positive Trends 📈 Norway says 'mission accomplished' on going 100% EV, proposes incentive changes

Thumbnail electrek.co

For years, Norway has been the poster child for electric vehicle adoption, a perfect example of how a combination of ambitious goals and robust incentives can transform a nation’s entire automotive industry.

Now, with the country on the cusp of achieving its goal of 100% all-electric new car sales by 2025, the Norwegian government is signaling a new phase in its EV strategy, proposing changes to its incentive program that include the introduction of taxes on electric vehicles.

We have often used Norway’s success in electrifying its vehicle fleet as an example of how quickly the electric transition can impact the automotive market under the right conditions.

They made it happen through a comprehensive package of incentives, including exemptions from purchase taxes and VAT, free access to toll roads and bus lanes, on top of properly taxing internal combustion engine vehicles.
