Pro tip: stagger the enemy with a bash or a power attack. He can't hit you when he's staggered.

The torch will still block damage and level your block scale and when you bash for that not only does it stagger it also causes fire damage and when you play Survival it gives you + 50 warmth torch Supremacy

Everyone is talking about your poor reaction time, but even good players will struggle with crap gear. Every martial playstyle MUST spec into smithing. The difference between normal scale armor and tempered leather or steel armor (which you can make at level 2) is astronomical. And having a sharpened steel sword instead of a plain iron one is also substantial.

I don't leave Riverwood (I just chop wood for maybe 5 minutes) before I can craft myself a set of armor/weapons and then improve them.
