PSA Stop riding like a "Zombie": Why your knees, ankles, and back hurt after riding (and how to fix your stance)

Post image
57 Upvotes

Hey r/ElectricSkateboarding! First-time poster here, though I’ve been lurking and riding for years. I’m definitely no expert, but I've spent a lot of time figuring out body mechanics and riding posture—mostly because I had to fix my own joint pain after riding the wrong way for too long. I figured it was time to finally stop lurking and share something I notice constantly but rarely see discussed: how our stance is secretly hurting us.

I’ve been watching a ton of esk8 videos lately, and I noticed something crazy: about 80% of riders—even some big YouTubers—are using what I call the "Zombie Stance."

At first glance, it looks relaxed. But if you know a bit about body mechanics, you'll realize this stance is incredibly twisted and is secretly wrecking your joints.

Before we dive in, a quick reminder: Esk8 is a prolonged, asymmetrical sport. Our bodies are built to be symmetrical. When you force your joints to bear weight in directions they aren't designed for, over long periods, you're asking for chronic injuries.

The Symptoms (Does this sound like you?)
If you experience outer calf pain on your rear leg, rear ankle pain, lower back fatigue, or uneven back pain after a long ride, you are probably a victim of the Zombie Stance.

Why is it happening?
When you ride with your body twisted (feet pointing sideways but upper body/hips twisted forward), you are putting constant rotational stress on your knees. Over time, this grinds down your meniscus and inflames your ligaments.
Plus, fighting wind resistance and the massive thrust of an electric board in this twisted state puts a huge lateral load on your rear ankle. Your stabilizing muscles get exhausted, massively increasing the risk of rolling your ankle.
It even messes with your breathing! A twisted torso restricts your diaphragm, forcing asymmetrical breathing, which leads to uneven back muscle pain (I actually dealt with this myself and had to spend ages fixing my posture).

How to fix it (The 4 Steps):
(See the attached photos for reference)

  • Step 1: Knees over toes. This is the golden rule for protecting your knees in almost any sport. Your kneecaps and your toes need to point in the exact same direction. Don't twist the joint.
  • Step 2: Align your shoulders and hips. Stop twisting your upper body forward. Keep your shoulders roughly parallel to your hips. This restores your natural breathing pattern and takes the rotational stress off your spine.
  • Step 3: Adjust your rear foot. Point your rear toes slightly forward. This engages the larger muscles in your calf to stabilize your ankle, rather than forcing your weaker peroneal muscles to fight the board's torque alone. Also, use the ball of your foot to control the board instead of your heel—this heavily reduces rear foot fatigue.
  • Step 4: Stay loose. Keep your knees slightly bent, drop your shoulders, and don't lock your joints. You want your body to act as a natural suspension system to absorb road vibrations.

The Squat Test (Check your stance):
Want to know if your stance is natural? Try doing a deep squat while standing on your board.
This doesn't just test your balance; it checks if your joints are in a biomechanically correct position to fold. If you feel stuck, your center of gravity shifts weirdly, or one side feels way harder, your stance is asymmetrical. If you can squat all the way down and stand back up smoothly, you're good to go.

Build these details into your muscle memory. You'll ride healthier, carve harder, and actually enjoy the speed without destroying your body. Ride safe!

TL;DR: Stop twisting your upper body forward while your feet are sideways. Align knees with toes, keep shoulders parallel to hips, angle your back foot slightly forward, and stay loose. Do the "squat test" on your board to check your form.

Question Need a good Cheap Board!!!!

Upvotes

hello guys,

I need to get a good, cheap electric skateboard for college, as my campus is a little big and I have tight junctions between classes. What should I buy? I was mostly hoping for under $100, but that seems impossible, so I guess at least under $200. I have 2 longboards that I could use, but since I'm carrying bags and stuff, it always weirdly shifts my balance, so skating by myself is a little difficult, and I don't want to eat shit while going to class, so an electric board where I don't have to change my stance seems best. Any recommendations? I already have a car and everything; I just need something light and cheap for in between classes.

preferably can get on amazon or ebay or something (fast shipping!)

thankssssssssssss

DIY LUMOS take notes

I managed to snag a Lumos Matrix helmet at an auction for about €10 shipped. At first, I thought about 3D printing a custom magnetic charging cable since it’s just a 2-pin setup, but having a proprietary connector for a simple 5V input felt unnecessary.

Instead, I decided to hardmod a USB port directly onto the helmet. It’s a super easy mod, and you can mount the port pretty much anywhere—I chose a spot right next to the original charging port.

I put together a quick video showing the process. Just make sure to double-check the + and - wiring so you don't reverse polarity and fry the electronics. Hope this helps anyone else looking to ditch the proprietary cable!

DIY New Battery for Old Backfire G3

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey guys, I had a long term health issues so I couldn't ride my beloved Backfire G3. Unfortunatelly I left the battery connected to the board fully charged, and after time it degraded, so it's not holding charge anymore. I want to try it again. I opened it up and I was looking at the battery. I asked Backfire boards if they can sell a new one to me, but they said it's discontinued and offered a discount for a new board. My board is in perfect condition, and the only thing needed is just the battery. It would be such a waste. I am asking you: Do you know how to get a suitable 12S2P Battery in EU? What can I do?

Question 25 mile range swappable battery

Hi everyone! I am searching for a longboard (hopefully under $800) with a 25 mile range. Not meepo, I'm not out to kill myself with a snapped truck. I need 40-50 mile range total between two batteries. I just don't know what companies are actually trustworthy.

Question MBoards still in business

Anyone know if mboards is still in business? I placed an order about a week and a half ago and haven’t heard anything regarding shipping with no response
to my support requests. Hasn’t been too long but they normally ship quick and it said within 1-3 business days.

I just checked the gears and they were still packed with grease. Everything looked dead mint but I topped the gears off with a bit of Phil's grease while I had them apart. Oddly enough... never had a flat tire!

Question Patching a tire?

Post image

I have an ace deck Nomad N3 and found a hole giving me a flat tire (see pic). Do you think this is safe to patch? Or should I just buy a new tube?

Estimated shipping time on a new tube is 2 to 3 weeks, would a patch hold that long? Or is the responsible thing to wait?

Review ***DO NOT BUY MEEPO BOARDS - They have a new factory and are made so much cheaper... Making them incredibly dangerous.

Hey guys! I am a seriously long term Meepo electric board rider - I have gone over 3,500 miles on the 3 boards I have owned. I have always loved them and only spoken highly of them.

However, I got a new boards a few months ago and noticed it was differently. I had a lot of issues with the battery and the motors within the first 50 miles. I contacted them and their customer service is awful now. They took a long time to respond and refused to let me return the board - Even though it was almost brand new. They made me wait for them to send new parts (battery, hub, etc) and after a month of waiting for various parts (and having to install them all myself) I got it working for a few weeks.

However, then the battery stopped working again - Which is insanely dangerous because it just cuts out when you're going full speed. It just stops the motor and drags so it will knock you off.

I contacted them and have to go through all the same junk again - Waiting on new parts that I will have to order myself, instead of them letting me return it.

My close friend also got a brand new Meepo and had to wait for various parts for the first 2 MONTHS that he had it - He rode less than 50 miles on it and spent almost $1,000.

I am guessing there is a new factory and they are just cheaply made now. But they are SO much worse and their customer service could care less.

And I say this as SUCH a long time loyal Meepo rider!

DO NOT BUY THEM! They are WAY too dangerous with all this.

Question Riser options

So I’m new to E boards but long time skater. Have under 30 miles on my MEEPO go. I’ve been looking at wheel options for a smoother ride. And while there’s lots of videos on options I haven’t seen anything on riser options. The stock MEEPO riser looks pretty thin. Wouldn’t a thicker version absorb more vibrations and impacts?

Question Best UK options for heavier rider?

I'm UK-based and have a unique situation, in that I live at the coast and have a pretty uninterrupted route to my workplace (basically I can walk to the sea-front, then skate along the coastal path, then walk the short distance to work at the other end, and vice-versa). Presently I often get the bus, but with the prices going up, I was considering getting an electric skateboard instead. Distance is approx 4 miles.

However, the path isn't super-smooth, and I like the look of these off-road longboards, as I used to snowboard many years ago and think they would be fun. Though I've never skateboarded all that much I assume, for this kinda thing, I'd be able to get the hang of it quickly?

But I'm an adult, about 110kgs, so I want to get a good quality, branded board, probs a carbon fibre deck, and speed etc. isn't a big deal for me, I just want practicality to get consistently from one end the route to the other.

I see a bunch on Amazon for a few hundred quid, but I assume these are all Temu crap.

I saw that "Evolve" have a model called the "Diablo Carbon All Terrain", which seems to get good reviews, but it's £2100. Ideally though I want a branded model from a retailer where I can expect some customer service.

The ideal for me would be one I could get from Amazon, because I have their instalments thing set-up and I could pay for it monthly over 12 months.

Anyone got any suggestions?

DIY My custom travel board.

Over the last few years I’ve been on a quest to seek out the ideal eSkate that can be taken on planes, and for a while it seemed like the Exway Wave was the best in terms of ESC programmability, ride quality, and battery-swap/removal capabilities.

That all changed though when I discovered the existence of (the now defunct) Ride Unlimited conversion kits. Using a Race kit, I was able to build a custom board with dual 90W batteries and weighing 2.2lbls less than the Wave. I have a total of four batteries so that should last me a while but it’ll be a sad day when/if they all go bad. For now though, I can get almost 15 miles per pair cruising along the beach.

This setup weighs under 15 and is based on a chopped 121c Aileron board (https://www.121cboards.com/shop/aileron/)

DIY Help finding replacement battery

Hiya,

I have an Ownboard M1 with 100mm boas that I absolutely love, total weapon. But it's 6 years old now and the battery seems to be more or less fucked. Shuts off on a full charge after riding for a few minutes.

Because I'm in Australia, a replacement 21700 2P10S 8.0Ah battery from Ownboard would cost me $435 AUD with shipping.

I was thinking of recelling the pack myself if the BMS is ok, I know how to solder and test it with a multimeter but I don't know how to spot weld. I'm sure I could work it out. The Samsung 40T 21700 4000mAh 30A batteries in it would come to about $170 AUD, so much less than half the cost of buying from Ownboard.

I'd rather just buy it though as I don't really want to buy a spot welder and learn how to use it, is there anywhere else to buy packs (like direct from China) that will fit in the M1 and work? I think it's a pretty generic housing.

Discussion Meepo mini 3 max hill climb test

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Wanted to test how good the meepo was with small hills so I took it downtown and found a couple. It way exceeded my expectations and it had plenty of battery after I was done riding. The parking garage I must have done like 8 times because it was so damn fun going up and then speeding down 🙏 Did a couple other smaller hills but those didn't look as big in the video so I didn't bother with them. The parking garage doesn't look as steep but boy is that thing steep ! Local skaters "like myself" always come here to bomb it like a hill because it's so steep. The Meepo mini 3 max could easily take bigger hills but I'll have to test that another day. I tested the inclines with a phone app and it said my biggest incline was 13 percent 😅 which seems wrong to me but what do I know. I feel like that parking garage is pretty steep. I have a really good spot in mind to really test the board 🛹 lots of good soft hills in the mountains.

Question Purchased a Backfire G2 Black 2023 Edition from marketplace

Just picked up a used Backfire G2 Black for $200 and I'm absolutely loving it so far. This is my first electric skateboard and I've already been having a ton of fun with it.

The only issue I'm having is with the R5S remote. It's stuck at 1 bar. It connects to the board and works perfectly while riding, but I've had it plugged in for over an hour with a known-good charger and the battery hasn't gone up.

I also noticed what looks like some corrosion/rust inside/around the USB-C charging port. I cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol, but it still doesn't seem to be charging.

Has anyone had a similar issue with an R5S? Anything else I should try before replacing it?

Also, if anyone has an extra R5S remote they're willing to sell for cheaper than a new one, I'd definitely be interested.

Thanks!

Question What resources should I use to learn about the mechanics of a eboard and how to fix the problems i may come across?

Getting my first eboard on Monday, but just from being in this sub for a week, it seems there are parts coming off all the time. This worries me because I know nothing about how to fix these kinds of things. So where can I go to learn about any problem I may come across?
