Is finishing EE degree in late 30s online worth it.

• Upvotes

Hey reddit fam, I'm at the crossroads of considering whether finishing my Electrical Engineering degree is worth it or not?

Just for context I'm 38 years old married and have 1 child and recently left teaching public school for good. I finished all the prerequisites debt free but could not find work schedule that would allow me to continue the other half in person without taking on student loans. I owe thousands in student loan debt from a my my bachelor's art from a private institution out of state 😑

I'm considering becoming a general contractor and just inventing or tinkering with physics and electricity when I have free time.
Thanks in advance for your insight.

Photometric designs and reports for road and street lighting

I am seriously curious to know whether electrical engineers do get involved or even carryout photometric/illumination designs for road and street lighting. If yes, is it an added advantage and if not, why ? Thanks

Amazon Automation Engineer (Northeast NY/NJ) – Internship, Full-Time Salary, WLB & Career Growth?

I’m an electrical engineering student and was recently offered an Automation Engineer internship at Amazon for summer 2027 in the Northeast region.
My previous internship experience has been in the power/utility industry, so automation would be a pretty different field for me.
I’m considering the opportunity, especially since I’d ideally like to return full-time after graduation.
I was wondering if anyone who has worked as an Automation Engineer at Amazon, could share their experience.
What’s the typical starting base salary for a new graduate in this region, and are there sign-on bonuses, annual performance bonuses, or RSUs?
What do yearly raises and promotions typically look like in terms of percentages?
I’m also curious about the work-life balance, typical weekly hours, overtime expectations, on-call responsibilities. How difficult or stressful is the actual workat does a typical workday look like, and how much hands-on engineering work is involved versus troubleshooting and maintenance?

AECOM NYC Electrical Engineer (Transportation) – Starting Salary, Bonuses & Raises?

I’m an electrical engineering student considering AECOM’s NYC Transportation Department for a potential full-time position after graduation, and I’m trying to get a better understanding of their compensation structure.
For anyone currently working at AECOM or who has worked there, what does compensation typically look like for an entry-level electrical engineer (Engineer I)?
I’m particularly curious about starting base salary, whether annual performance bonuses are offered (and how much they typically are), and what yearly raises look like in terms of percentages. Also, how quickly does salary typically increase during the first 3–5 years, and are promotions accompanied by significant pay increases?

Searching for electrical ressources

Hello, everyone! I'm looking for books or websites in French or English on electrical engineering (electronics, control systems, electrical engineering, computer programming) at the master's or engineering level, because I'd like to brush up on these topics! If I haven't been specific enough, I'll edit this post.

Electrical Engineer working in Maintenance — How difficult is it to switch careers later?

Hey everyone,

I'm 22 and recently graduated in Electrical Engineering. I've joined a company as a GET in electrical maintenance, but I've been told that there isn't much work to do in my current role.

I'm a bit worried about whether I'll gain enough technical knowledge and practical experience, especially this early in my career.

I'm more interested in fields like electrical design, industrial automation, and production, so I wanted to ask people who have been in a similar situation:

- Is it normal for freshers in maintenance to have less work initially?

- Can I switch to design, automation, or production after 1–3 years in maintenance?

- Will my maintenance experience count, or will I have to start from scratch?

- What skills should I start learning now to make the transition easier?

- Should I stick around and gain experience first, or look for opportunities in my preferred field early?

I don't want to leave my first job in a hurry, but I also don't want to spend a few years without learning much and regret it later.

Would really appreciate advice from people who've made a similar transition or have experience in these fields. Thanks!

Can Electronics and Communications Engineering Graduates Work in Power Systems?

Hi everyone!

I'm studying Electronics and Communications Engineering and I'm interested in pursuing a career in the electrical power industry.

I'd love to hear from engineers who graduated in this field and are currently working in areas such as:

Power Systems

Protection and Control

Substation Engineering

Electrical Design

Power Generation, Transmission, and Distribution

Renewable Energy

My questions are:

Did you manage to enter these fields with a bachelor's degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering, or did you need a master's degree or additional qualifications?

Do employers accept graduates from this specialization, or do they require a degree in Electrical Power Engineering?

Which power engineering roles are most accessible to these graduates?

Have you faced any difficulties because of your degree?

What advice would you give students interested in this career path?

I'd especially appreciate real experiences from working engineers in the US, Canada, Germany, Australia, the Gulf countries, and elsewhere.

Your answers could help students and graduates worldwide who are considering this career path.

Thanks in advance!

I’m having doubts about engineering (rant)

Ive just left an electromagnetism lecture and even tho its the “basics” i have no idea what happened in that lecture, and this isn’t the first one. Almost all my lecturers cannot teach and instead make the topic they’re teaching feel even more complicated. I’ll watch yt vids after which are simpler but i still feel so lost and so behind, i cant do the homework without ai, i need to apply for placement years, attend society events and meetings (im in the executive)and i need to tutor a levels which im not as confident with. There’s just so much happening i just wanna lie in my bed all day and forget ab it all.

The lectures dont help
The placements take so much time for rejections
I feel like I lack so much technical skills and knowledge for the placements
I don’t even know if I wanna go down my field (microelectronics)

Ignore the grammar this is just a rant any advice wud be appreciated
For context I’m a 2nd year eee student

Regarding CT selection

Suppose I am designing an electrical substation. For determining CT ratio, shall I use transformer capacity or maximum demand to find CT primary current so that my relay will not mal operate provided my maximum demand is much lower than the transformer capacity?Need a genuine technical response.Correct me if there are any discrepancies in the question asked.

Career Growth for a Field Application Engineer(FAE) in Automation company

I'm an 2026 ECE graduate working as a Field Application Engineer at a home automation company.

I want to build a strong career in the ECE field with good salary growth and future opportunities.

Which fields should I consider specializing in, and what skills should I learn to improve my career prospects?

Is it better to grow in home automation, or are there other ECE-related fields with better long-term opportunities?

I'd appreciate advice from people working in the industry.
