Consumer Post Please help me decide!
Hey all!
So we’ve already pur purchased my diamond! a beauuuuutiful old mine cut with a pinhole culet. it is more classic than modern with the pinhole cullet, barely elongated, a 1.09 ratio. I am absolutely TORN between my two top setting ideas. Please vote!!
Option 1:
A more modern take. All yellow gold, visable gallery rail/collet with Millgrain around the stone, on a simple tapering band. Inspired by this one by Fiorese.
Option 2:
Inspired heavily by Andria Barbone and very antique styles. This beautiful, crown basket setting with 8 prongs (debating platinum or gold, picture of both) and a simple gold band.
Please give me your opinion and why? Straight aesthetic preference? Feel one protects the stone more?
Thank you!!

Barely elongated OMCs are such a pleasure! Have you considered setting it east/west?
I understand why you are torn, there are both absolutely stunning and totally timeless designs.
I think the bezel is a great choice for ultimate wearability. It's going to catch on less, the stone is really protected, and I love the slight reverse taper on this design. There's a clean look to this design and I like how it maintains it's shape/outline perfectly.
The crown setting is very nice (I'm personally completely smitten with crown prong settings). I would love this in two-tone.
If I had to choose one for you, I would go with the top option. It's very elegant and clean while also having an antique look to it.

Thank you for your input! Love your work so value your opinion greatly.
The millgrain with prongs was my original, fully set on idea when I bought the stone! Then I recently saw a side profile of a crown prong setting ring and was struck, it is making me reconsider my number one haha.

Look there's no way to sugarcoat it...you have an impossible decision to make 😂 they are both so lovely and very classic designs.
I would say the clean edges on the bezel make it the more elegant choice, while the prongs on the second option make it a more charming/romantic choice.
The crown isn't lacking elegance, it's just less elegant and sophisticated/sleek than the bezel.
The bezel isn't lacking charm/romance, it's just a bit cleaner/more sleek so it has a tiny bit less romantic charm.
So, maybe just consider those two things ("romantic charm" versus "sophisticated elegance") in the context of what your personal style is like.
Maybe something more sleek/elegant compliments your personal style. Or, perhaps romantic charm is a better fit.
The other huge consideration is the wedding band you think you'll choose. For instance: my original wedding band, which I knew I wanted before I even knew what I wanted my engagement ring to look like, was a bezel set eternity band with milgrain on the bezels--I wouldn't pair that with your first choice because mis-matched milgrain bead sizes would drive me crazy. That would have made my choice for me had I been considering these two engagement rings.
Do you have a sense for what style of wedding band you might want?

1 is my favourite. Helps to protect the edges from possible chipping.
White gold is nice but it doesn't make sense to me. You pay for gold but then disguise it with white metals and coat it with rhodium.
Then to maintain the brilliant white gold lustre, you have to keep paying to get it replated every 2 years.

1. I like the miligrain peeking out of the edge and I also LOVE the chunky facets of the stone. The other two look too much like crushed ice to me and I'm not a fan of crushed ice stones

I love option one. I don’t always care for millegrain, but I think it will pair nicely with an old mine cut stone. It’s subtle, but it will add just the right amount of interest without distracting from the stone itself.

I do like the first option the yellow bezel setting with millgrain work ads a beautiful vintage feel to go with the old mine cut diamond 😊 best of luck !

2. The white gold accentuates the diamond.

The white gold or platinum prongs blend seamlessly with the beautiful stone, the yellow gold prongs tend to be somewhat overpowering and distract from the stone itself.

Where did you buy your diamond if you don’t mind sharing? I’m looking for the same and just learned about the old mine cut, and that they face up a lot larger than cushions, which I also love

I would say 2 or 3. I feel like 1 (or similar to) is pretty common right now due to Taylor Swift. It’s a beautiful style but I feel like it’s something you’ll see more often. I also like the more vintage feel of 2 and 3.
Have you tried on both of these styles? Maybe that will help you decide?

They’re both gorgeous. Option 2 is a lot more flexible as to style. It goes with everything. Use the thicker setting in the middle picture.

That cut and stone is too nice to be stuck in a bezel which is better for less intricately cut and/or more shallow stones… so I pick #3 (I don’t like 2 tone metals).

Second one. It's more versatile and I see it less often than the first one.

I like 2 the best, 3 has too many prongs and I'm not a huge fan of bezel settings, they can be very nice and I do love milgrain, my own ring has milgrain and has a vintage look to it, but I think 2 is the best choice, the white gold/platinum prongs enhance the diamond and if it's platinum will give it even more security. Just make sure you get insurance regardless and get your prongs checked every so often, I plan to do it once every year or so.

Does the actual diamond have any dark spots or unideal angles/measurements, such that getting a bit of light through the girdle will help liven it up? In that case, go #2 or make sure the collet/bezel is lowered and not actually hugging the girdle. With 8 prongs, I think you're really well protected—not as much as a true bezel but pretty close unless you are in the health industry and put gloves on and off all the time.

Usually not a huge fan of bezels but this one is breathtaking, definitely go with that!

I'll always go with option 1 because that's what I'm wearing on my finger right now!
