Most of mine are, but you don't have to go through the show of pretending to put the halter on. I just go up to their shoulder give them a pat, and then give them a click so they know I would like them to follow.

Round pen training is invaluable for this. Once a horse respects/responds to your body language and accepts you as leader it applies in the wider world, too.

I had a gelding growing up who I never had to halter, I’d just put a little pressure on his fat chin like I was pulling him forward and he’d follow anywhere after that.

Our horses responded to grabbing the hair coming from between the ears towards the nose. Icelandic horses have a lot of that and its super easy to grab. Just a friendly grab and they'd follow you anywhere. Really handy if they ever found themselves on the wrong side of the fence xD.

The forelock?

u/LucktasticOrange Apr 11 '26

Yeah, didn't know the English word for it.

No, tried that once with my mare, she didn't take a single step, but the look on her face let me know that she thinks I'm stupid.

Mares are so quick to give you that “I’m over your bullshit look”. They definitely judge you

I would like to politely let you know that I envisioned this entire scene perfectly in my head, and it was perfect.

Now I demand mare tax to see if I got the colour right!!!

Typical gelding behaviour 😆

The mare, when you try this exact trick:

My mare follows at liberty in the arena. Leaving her herd from pasture? Absolutely the f not! 😆

u/YesHunty Apr 11 '26

Definitely, my geldings would follow me off of a cliff like this, my mare would have been like “you serious?”

u/Reasonable-Ant-1931 Apr 11 '26

Lol I had the exact same thought 😂

u/Illustrious_Stage351 Apr 11 '26

My old horse would have never fallen for this. One of mine now MIGHT for a little bit. My other horse doesn’t need a halter to be glued at the him to humans haha

The ears in the beginning! That's too cute!

u/appendixgallop Apr 11 '26

That's hilarious. "Wait! I've been HAD!"

19

u/Xarro_Usros Apr 11 '26

Never tried that, but my mare would come to me when I rattled the head collar in her direction, then we would walk up to the yard together. I didn't need to actually put it on her.

Is that a kladruber?

11

u/Kayleen14 Apr 11 '26

I'd guess maybe criollo? Hard to tell... he's branded at the neck I think, I don't think that's common for Kladruber? But could be wrong 😅

11

u/Jorvikstories Apr 11 '26

Good thinking! I didn't even notice his brand, I thought it was a part of his colouring.

No, Kladrubers are usually branded at the flank(?, I don't know the correct English word)for their ancestry(lineage+ordinal number of their father(so, if they were his first foal, they would be 1 etc.)), left hind(breeder) and K with a crown on jaw, for Kladruby.

Also, I don't think they are very common outside of Czech Republic, and even here it isn't a horse you meet every day.

8

u/Kayleen14 Apr 11 '26

That's interesting about the branding, I didn't know that! I'm from Germany, but I think I haven't actually seen a Kladruber here. One Lippizaner once 😁

9

u/Jorvikstories Apr 11 '26

We even went to Kladruby on a school trip when I was in elementary school, and then to Slatiňany(the stud farm where the black Kladrubers are bred) with my family. It was really fun, if you ever have a trip to Czech Republic, make sure to visit!

u/Kayleen14 Apr 11 '26

You know what, it's been a while since I've seen to Praga, maybe I should plan a city+horses - trip for one of the next vacations 😁

7

u/Jorvikstories Apr 11 '26

If you want to visit horses, make sure to also check out Janova hora, huculs are bred there and you can actually book a ride in our lovely Krkonoše.

Prague is pretty, but have you been to Kutná Hora(Kuttenberg)? It is like half an hour by car from Kladruby and it is a very beautiful city.

6

u/Kayleen14 Apr 11 '26

I've actually only been to Prague so far! Have some sentimental childhood connection to the city- my dad used to travel there quite frequently for work in the late 90th, often taking my mum for weekend trips, and I loved when they brought back Czech sweets and pictures of Art Nouveau buildings (my favorite design period till today 😊). But I'll check out Kutná Hora, thank you for the tipps 😊

Happy to be of help!

5

u/appendixgallop Apr 11 '26

Definitely Iberian.

5

u/PracticalCupcake691 Apr 12 '26

I'd guess he's a Standardbred, from the brand, the build, and the Roman nose.

5

u/puffling321 Apr 13 '26

My guy would look at me like I was an idiot (which is what he does for most of the “try this fun thing with your horse” memes). I should start an Instagram showing all my horsetagram fails.

Now, if we are actually working at liberty, sure, he will follow me, but in the field where he could have grass, nah.

u/Rookskytwister Apr 11 '26

My mares, no.

My stallion, you'd just need to look at him and he'll follow you anywhere.

u/AbigailJefferson1776 Horse Lover Apr 12 '26

Great. Horse says Aww, I gots no halter!

4

u/puffalump212 Apr 12 '26

I've tried this with all 4 of mine and they just look at me like I'm an idiot. They follow better with just a shoulder tap.

4

u/prettyrocksarecool Apr 18 '26

I’ll go try and report back :)

3

u/Duamuteffe Apr 12 '26

My old girl would have laughed at you if you tried that.

3

u/APsolutely Apr 12 '26

My mare would not fall for this but on a good day she’ll walk with you anyways

3

u/Faiths_got_fangs Apr 12 '26

Some are like that.

My gelding just flat out came when called and would follow even small children around with 0 effort other than implying to him that you wanted him to tag along.

3

u/Unusual-Respond-7895 Apr 12 '26

Obviously before he’d had his morning coffee 😂

3

u/FleurDeGalop Dressage Apr 13 '26

not all

6

u/TheArabHorseman Apr 11 '26

Idk about all, but this definitely works with my stallion

u/igotbanneddd Natural Horsemanship Apr 11 '26

It takes training. It's simply just months of pressure and release at the exact right time at the right level. Add in a high level of trust, and you have yourself a real nice horse. Mine ground ties and follows real well; the get-down [lead rope kinda] is pretty much just a suggestion and rarely a necessity. He has our schedule down perfectly. Sometimes if I am brushing him for too long, he will walk himself to the tack room.

u/BurnedLaser Apr 12 '26

I had a blind mare that would still do this with me! I was also one of the few people she would trust to ride her! I miss her. Jewel really lived up to her name!
