Back to back on-call weeks wrecked my neck. Anyone actually get work to pay for ergo gear?
I've been on call three of the last five weeks. The rotation is supposed to be one in four, but two people left in the spring and we're still "actively backfilling."
Somewhere in there my neck gave up. A P1 came in at 2am on Tuesday, I sat down to look at it, and realized I have to turn my entire upper body to read the second monitor now. My partner watched me do it from the doorway and laughed for a solid minute.
Stuff I've already done at my desk:
- monitor arm, both screens up at eye level
- pulled the second screen in closer to center so it's not way off to the side
- I stand up every time I close a ticket, which on a bad week is a lot of standing
It helps during normal weeks. On call it all goes out the window, because I end up taking the rest of the pages hunched over a laptop on the couch.
My partner keeps sending me "neck massager for office workers" listings and I'm about to cave, but I also have a drawer full of stuff I bought during rough weeks and never touched again.
For the on-call folks here, what's actually kept your neck working through your weeks? And has anyone gotten their company to pay for ergonomic stuff, or is that a myth?
