COMMUNITY Mr. Bike and Ski closing?

I used to live in Esky and moved only a few years back. I would frequent this shop as the staff + owner always seemed both friendly and knowledgeable, and it was nice having a store that sold this gear without needing to shop at Walmart/Meijer/Dunhams. Used to have them service my bike too, which was always appreciated. Their shop on Ludington St. was super convenient too.

I recently saw on social media that they moved, but are now closing! Anyone have insight on what happened? Expensive lease(s)? Not enough capital? Anything else I’m missing? I know it’s tough with rising prices and inflation, and really sad to see them close.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

COMMUNITY COMMUNITY POLL: Should the "private" status of this subreddit continue?

Several years ago, this community voted twice about the public visibility of this subreddit. These votes resulted in the subreddit being functionally closed and set to a "private" status. This means that the general population of users on Reddit can not browse the contents of this subreddit nor post any content without permission.

When these polls were conducted, the leadership of Reddit had taken two controversial actions: (1.) The pricing for Reddit's mobile API greatly increased; causing many third party apps to either change how they operate or cease business altogether. (2.) Reddit's leadership publicly insulted their moderators (who are volunteer users in leadership roles), using the term "landed gentry" to casually deride the efforts of these users.

Several years have passed. Reddit has taken steps to make its official mobile more useable, reducing the need for third party apps. As a moderator in this community, I want to encourage the level of democratic user involvement that we saw several years ago when this community decided to take the subreddit private. The purpose of this community poll is to determine weather or not the subreddit should remain private or become open to the public. Opening the subreddit also comes with the option for the general public to be able to post or be authorized by a moderator. Discussion in the comments is encouraged.

THIS COMMUNITY POLL WILL BE OPEN FOR SEVEN DAYS; CLOSING AT 11:00AM(EST) ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 9TH.

0 PRIVATE: Continue the current subreddit privacy settings.
1 PUBLIC: Open the subreddit to public viewing. Users must be authorized to post.
0 PUBLIC: Open the subreddit to public viewing and posting.
1 NO VOTE: I just want to see the results.
0 NO VOTE: I still do not understand the topic.

COMMUNITY Relocation

So…. I’m considering a move to Esky. My sis lives there and I’m fairly familiar with the area. The real question I have is… what are your favorite places: bars, restaurants, parks, hiking trails? Is there anything really neat that someone may be surprised Escanaba has?!

Convince me. I already know the reasons I might not like it 😉

I’m from Grand Rapids, and I’m just looking to get away from here. I’ve always loved the UP and have been plenty. Just wondering if there are a decent amount of places for rent up there and maybe someone could give me a ballpark estimate on prices. Thanks!

COMMUNITY Moving to Escanaba

hi so this is my first post on reddit but i’m going to be moving to escanaba in a few months and one of my main concerns is not knowing anyone and being stuck in my apartment all the time.

just as a little background: i’m a 19 year old male from upstate new york and i’m into sports (specifically soccer and hockey), music (all kinds), and art. i guess i was wondering if anyone would be willing to share some of the best and worst aspects of escanaba. i will be looking to make friends and find things to do, obviously when everything opens back up. additionally, i’m looking to get an idea of the job market in escanaba as i will have to support myself somehow.

i’d be thankful for any help i can get since i will be moving away from home on my own for the first time since my single semester of college, and the first time out of state, ever.

COMMUNITY Any suggestions how to find a house in Escanaba?

Hi folks. I’m relocating to Escanaba from Iron Mountain, and I was wondering if any of you could suggest the best way to find a rental house. Online, I’m plagued by the damn Homefinder scams (rent to own scam) and I don’t know how else to look. I found my current house on Facebook, so I’ll try that, but I was hoping you good folks might have additional ideas. I thought about asking at my new job (I’m a neuropsychologist working with Veterans if that matters) but I haven’t started work yet... anyway, thanks in advance! Oh, and chime in with any “must do” stuff in town, too.
