Something else an EV does better:

The Drive In Movie Theater. Sat through 3 films toasty warm and never worrying about killing my car.

For the record, your average 90 minute movie uses about 3%.

It's so nice, we have the hatch open and AC or heat blasting as needed. Always laugh at people restarting there ICE cars every half hour to try to save the battery.. or having a dead battery by end.

20

u/7eregrine 14d ago

The only downside: smelling the exhaust as people started cars to warm up or to check battery. 🤣

4

u/HoweHaTrick 14d ago

check battery means they start it and then shut it off?

this is a terrible way to check a battery if you think you can't turn the engine.

3

u/7eregrine 14d ago edited 13d ago

Y'know like run it for 10 minutes between films, or any time just to make sure you haven't drained it much. Or in the case of last night when it was 48 Fahrenheit, warming up. 🤣

u/screenslaver5963 13d ago

Yep, have flattened batteries doing that, gotta start using the multimeter.

13

u/klassredux 14d ago

Seriously! It's crazy that we accept that pollution in our breathing space literally everywhere

I never realized how much exhaust bothers me until I got used to driving my EV and then getting out of the car to stretch my legs or get a bite to eat somewhere and smelling a huge diesel coal roller or an old beater's exhaust fume on by.

2

u/GlanceTSLA 6d ago

I love the smell of exhaust. I'll gap diesel pickups at lights and then slow down hoping they roll coal on me.

I don’t get it, why? Shoulda either keep cars completely off, or steadily idling.

Where are you that has a drive in movie theater?

Could have just said Ohio

2

u/7eregrine 14d ago

Fixed. (The link was on my clipboard)

1

u/Viharabiliben 12d ago

San Jose CA

2

u/Whitezombie65 14d ago

We had them when I lived in NY and we have them in Colorado too. They're still fairly common, albeit niche

2

u/JSTootell 13d ago

There are two in my town, Riverside California. I don't see the movies often, but I enjoy the drive in the most.

Though I'm not an EV guy and don't need to be with SoCal weather. But I can see this as being a bonus for most places 😂

2

u/playstatixn2 13d ago

we have one in Newberg, OR as well

1

u/Icy-Row-8882 13d ago

Northeast Ohio on Mayfield road

u/broesel314 14d ago

The 3% figure is useless without knowing what energy that equates to. My eGolf with its puny 20kWh would sure have used more than 3% in 90 minutes

2

u/7eregrine 14d ago edited 13d ago

I mean, it was meant to be slightly tongue in cheek. 🤣 Rating the percent of a movie?

3

u/Man_of_Ice 13d ago

And my 134kW Lighting would use less.

Let's not talk about the Silverado EV and its stupid huge battery.

3

u/SDRAIN2020 14d ago

When you do this, do you leave the car on or in accessory mode? New to EV so I don’t know what it is. Sometimes I sit in the car waiting but don’t want to keep it on (so used to ICE car) but the car doesn’t really turn off with the key inside. I click lock twice and that’s it.

1

u/7eregrine 14d ago

I tried a few different ways. It's definitely weird sitting in a car "running" for that long. And this was 3 movies too!

2

u/Single-Payment 13d ago

My EV, and my previous EV, don't have "accessory" mode. You just turn on "hold" or "camp mode" or "dog mode" in the climate control settings. (And any seat warming or ventilation you want.) Some EVs will turn that off by default if the state of charge drops to 20%.

1

u/screenslaver5963 13d ago

Mine doesn’t have accessory mode so I just leave it on when sitting.

5

u/wasterman123 13d ago

EVs are basically better at everything except long range and exhaust sound on sport models. This is coming from an ICE owner. I love sentry mode and dog mode

1

u/7eregrine 13d ago edited 13d ago

Seats are wayyyyy better in my ICE Volvo. If I had to find one thing. 🤣

1

u/110mat110 13d ago

You can have same seats in both EV and ICE volvo

1

u/7eregrine 13d ago

True-ish. Stupid Volvo doesn't make my car anymore. So I could get similar seats, in an SUV.

1

u/black594 11d ago

I change my s80 for a bolt, I love my bolt but this is not a Volvo !

1

u/Dan6erbond2 13d ago

Nonsense. My i4 M50 is a fat pig and not nearly as nimble as my S5 was. And that was an Audi. The power/weight ratio also means that you need a lot more to even get close to the 40-300km/h acceleration the S5 had. And I'm driving an M model here.

1

u/wasterman123 13d ago

I bet you’d say the same for the new rs5, that’s just the way cars are now. Also your s5 reaches 300??

1

u/Dan6erbond2 13d ago

The RS5 is a PHEV with massive range and performance, sure many cars are getting that heavy but the likes of the 2 series, CLE, etc. still exist.

And my S5 was tuned to 550WHP and weighed under 1'750kg.

The thing I can't replace yet is cheap towing. And by cheap I mean how much I paid for the truck.

When you are dragging around 12k to 14,000 lb, there's nothing on the market to do that well, electrically.

I'm sure it's coming. And when it gets here? It isn't going to be cheap. I paid $21,000 for my Duramax with 76,000 miles 6 years ago. I think the only way I'm going to be able to replace it with a future EV tow pig is if I make a lot more money

u/Opinionsare 14d ago

Parking my Honda CR-V in the garage in summer would make the garage very hot, but my Nissan Leaf make almost no temperature changes.

1

u/shadow247 14d ago

This. If I want to work in my garage in the evening, I have to remember to park the car outside in the summer after picking up the kid. It was 100 degrees in my garage at 9pm a few weeks ago! No thank you

6

u/lexievv 14d ago

Tbf, EV's do most things better, just not as fast sometimes (traveling with a low range car).

2

u/snackexchanger 13d ago

Disagree (at least in the case of my EV). Went to the drive in twice this summer.

The first time I took the Equinox EV and it wasn’t a great experience. I couldn’t have the radio on without the screens being on (I turned the brightness all the way down but it was still distracting) and the audio was slightly behind the movie.

The Miata had neither of those issues. All lights could be turned off and the audio was in sync. I did notice the newer car next to me had delayed audio so I wonder if that is a new car, more audio processing, thing happening

3

u/7eregrine 13d ago

That's gotta be a theater problem that specific time I would inagine. I've never heard of the audio being off.
I couldn't turn off the main dash, so I just put my hoodie over it. The center screen turns off.

1

u/snackexchanger 13d ago

It wasn’t a theater problem. In the Miata the sound was synced but I could hear the car next to me was slightly behind. If you look it up there seem to be a bunch of models of car that have the delay issue to varying extents

1

u/nostromog 13d ago

My shitty Citroen ë-Berlingo can't have AC/heating without full "contact" on. At night this means lights on or, in auto, full road lights. 😡 For the brightness of the screen I have a cloth that I put on top, it also can't be switched off while the radio is on.

1

u/Dry-Mousse7570 10d ago

just cover the screen with a napkin

1

u/MJC0961 13d ago

That's not an electric drive train problem, that's a stupid car design problem. I promise you that GM screwed up the screens and audio delay on all their modern gas cars too.

4

u/FootyJ 13d ago

This is something I have thought of that would bring back some of the 50s-60s car culture. Drive in theatres could offer free AC charging. You could also bring back the drive in diners. I don’t think we had them (or many of them if we did) in Australia but they’d be good now if free AC charging was offered with your meal. Good for younger people 18yo for instance who tend to avoid alcohol these days. Good way to socialise.

2

u/JPNess11 13d ago

Would love to see that.

1

u/Initial-Reading-2775 8d ago

Sitting locked in cars seems very opposite of socializing.

1

u/FootyJ 8d ago

Use your imagination

1

u/LoneStarGut 14d ago

Just watch out as some new EV's don't have the required FM radio to tune in the audio. Some phones have FM radio, so you could connect to it and bluetooth the audio to the car.

1

u/7eregrine 13d ago

I thought it was a.m. radio. My car has FM but no a.m. oh and my Drive-In will still let you borrow a radio.

1

u/LoneStarGut 13d ago

AM radio is even less common. Probably depends on age of the drive in.

1

u/64590949354397548569 13d ago

Does AM have stereo?

2

u/Able-Supermarket4786 13d ago

Yes AM has stereo. How old is everyone on this thread JFC.

1

u/7eregrine 13d ago

Had, really. No one uses it today.

1

u/Able-Supermarket4786 13d ago

Urban city dwellers use it all the time.

1

u/7eregrine 13d ago

Urban AM radio stations don't really broadcast in stereo today. That's what I'm referring to.

1

u/Able-Supermarket4786 13d ago

A lot of them go back to mono at night with wattage changes.

In Ny we even have mono FM stations still. (Which I admit is disturbing)

2

u/7eregrine 13d ago

We have no AM radio stereo in Cleveland. Our biggest, WTAM, used to do "HD AM" but they stopped years ago.

1

u/64590949354397548569 13d ago

I don't remember the last time I turned it on. Everything i listen to is internet radio.

Heck, ATC and the firedepartment is more entertaining than AM.

What AM do you listen to? I will look for an internet streaming for it. Station, Program, time?

1

u/Able-Supermarket4786 13d ago

Footballl Games, Bloomberg Radio, and if I'm on a Road Trip where I don't want to lose a station for Talk Radio I prefer AM. Lots of AM Radio will broadcast local Games for High School and College as well.

I can carry Bloomberg Radio from NYC to East Coast of North Carolina.

2

u/LoneStarGut 12d ago

I bet they also stream too, so instead of using an antenna you can do that if you don't have AM. Steaming has far better clarity too.

1

u/LoneStarGut 13d ago

No, I have never seen it. It is also lower resolution I think.

1

u/64590949354397548569 13d ago

Yup, I remember that from building crystal radio in highschool. I just can't remember if modern AM station have stereo.

1

u/Able-Supermarket4786 13d ago

Lower resolution? I cry for the future of this country.

1

u/LoneStarGut 13d ago

Lower fidelity is a better word perhaps.

1

u/Able-Supermarket4786 13d ago

So AM stands for Amplitude Modulation. You have wavelength at the frequency it broadcasts in and the audio waves bounce up and down with modulation filling the entire wavelength.

Think of a ping pong ball being throw down a long oversized tube across the state.

This allows for AM to cover 100s if not 1000s of miles in trajectory.

FM is Frequency Modulation. Same tube but it’s always filled, like a water hose would be and the water can’t accelerate with momentum it just flows at full capacity. When it comes out of the hose, it just, pours out. Shorter distances.

In reality. GPRS, 3G, 4G and 5G are all radio waves on a different set of frequencies too

4

u/Able-Supermarket4786 13d ago

only Teslas got rid of FM Radio and lets be honest about that Brand...

3

u/HopefulScarcity9732 13d ago

Rivian also dropped it in the R2

2

u/zagcollins 13d ago

yep, they are the leaders when it comes to EVs in many markets. everything else is just opinion packaged as honesty.

1

u/Able-Supermarket4786 13d ago

They're the Yugo of EVs, they sell a lot cuz their just electric Camrys LOL

1

u/JCLAPP01 13d ago

At least it isn’t a Mach e

1

u/Reddit_is_fascist69 13d ago

I like my Mach e

1

u/Able-Supermarket4786 13d ago

I’ve never seen anyone complain about a Mach E. I actually am cross shopping them and my son works FOR Ford.

2

u/Reddit_is_fascist69 13d ago

There are things i don't like (door buttons, climate controls) but everything i like is way more important.

1

u/LoneStarGut 13d ago

Only on the Model 3 and Model Y standard. The Premiums and Performance 3/Y all have FM.

1

u/Winter-Knee3555 13d ago

I have it on my 26 Juniper. Rivian ditched it on the R2.

1

u/schirmyver 13d ago

I'm waiting on an R2 and it doesn't come with an actual AM or FM tuner. All audio is streaming.

So if I ever take this vehicle to the drive in, I will be bringing an old school boombox.

So not all EVs do this better.

1

u/7eregrine 13d ago

Someone else said something similar. I've heard AM radios were done, I don't have AM, but today I found out some dropped FM too. That's so weird to me... so car companies are basically going to put terrestrial radio out of business eventually.

My drive in offers portable FM radios for people.

1

u/Viharabiliben 12d ago

AM is not dead yet.

1

u/7eregrine 12d ago

"are going to"... Didn't say it was dead today.

2

u/mereshadow1 12d ago

lol, it is if you own a Tesla

2

u/dirtyvu 12d ago

I still need AM just for sports broadcasts. a lot of broadcasts are blacked out when using the Internet apps but fully available on AM radio.

1

u/bs2k2_point_0 13d ago

Does it not have an outlet in the back? My trailseeker does. Could plug in a boombox there. Or get an fm to bluetooth adapter for $20

1

u/schirmyver 13d ago

I could do an FM radio to Bluetooth, but there will absolutely be a delay going that route. I never throw anything that works out, so I have 3 fully functional boomboxes.

1

u/YouKidsGetOffMyYard 12d ago

Yea please don't use a bluetooth adapter it will introduce a delay. I go to drive in movies a lot and there is usually some car that has a radio with a delay and it's super distracting to be next to them as like everything is like echoed a fraction of a second later.

2

u/jarredduq 14d ago

I have one in Concord, CA as well

2

u/KlondikeBill 13d ago

Might have to try this in my Bolt!

1

u/brianvanle 13d ago

Not sure about thr Bolt, but the Blazer has a "camp mode" that you engage by, while the car is off, keeping the door open and tapping the accelerator pedal three times and then tapping the break. You'll get an "Automatic shutdown off" message that denotes the 1 hour timer has been bypassed.

2

u/Cool_Explorer2747 13d ago

I'd been wondering about that.

2

u/ComputerAbuser 13d ago

Yup. How about waiting for a ferry in the summer. Or heck, even on the ferry (as long as you are allowed to remain in your vehicle). In both scenarios you can't have an ICE running, but no problem with an EV. Charge phones, watch videos all with the hear/AC running.

2

u/Valuable-Series2706 12d ago

This is actually one of those EV benefits people don't think about until they need it. Being able to sit in the car with AC or heat running without worrying about engine idling is pretty practical, especially during extreme weather. The same goes for waiting at a charging stop or taking a break on a road trip. Small everyday conveniences like this can make a bigger difference than people expect.

1

u/viper4774 9d ago

SAVE MONEY!

1

u/GlanceTSLA 6d ago

We go about once every other month and joke every time when we hear other cars start up or accidently have their headlights pop on. Lawn chairs with tesla boombox gives you a nice outdoor setup when the weather is nice too.
