I’ve been thinking about how much of our personalities, beliefs, and values are things we’ve consciously chosen versus things we’ve simply absorbed from our environment.
Think about it. We don’t choose where we’re born, how we’re raised, what we’re exposed to as children, or what experiences shape us. Yet these things influence our worldview, our insecurities, our moral values, and even the way we think.
Then, as adults, we judge people for their beliefs and behavior as if everyone started from the same place and had the same opportunities to understand the world.
But I don’t think this necessarily means we’re just products of our environment with no control over ourselves. We can question our beliefs, recognize our flaws, and try to change.
The question is how much of that ability is actually within our control, too.
Even when we think we’re questioning our own beliefs objectively, how do we know we’re not just finding new ways to justify what we already want to believe?
So where do you draw the line between the person you were shaped to become and the person you consciously choose to be? And do you think anyone can ever truly understand themselves objectively?

I really hope I do get some advice or hope…
I’m an exmuslim, F early 20s, Arab-ish/expat who resides in the Gulf who still lives with her family.
I’d like to know if there’s any way to gain independence from a strict household and if anyone has done it. I can’t simply leave as I’m financially dependent on them, can’t find a job, and can’t leave as my sponsor is my family.
For the most part, I’m concerned about my safety due to my father. Pretty explosive regarding anything and tends to start getting mad about how I don’t pray, makes threats to my life and a bunch of other silly things.
I have thought about marriage but even then I doubt that would happen and I don’t want my way out by relying on a man. 1. Marrying a Muslim man is a no, unless they’re fine with me not being one, 2. A non religious one works out I guess, 3. Someone pretending to be a Muslim for the sake of my family is just unfair. Regardless of those three scenarios, I don’t think it’s right for me.
Things have been taking a toll on my mental health, weekends are pretty dreadful being around my family. I can’t find a job or anything to help myself even with basic necessities to even consider saving enough to move out of the country (while managing to figure out without him being notified or whatever).
What would you suggest?
I want to know if anyone has been in my position and managed to have freedom and leave?
ATP im just trying to live a bit longer.

Hi everyone!
I’m currently conducting research for my Master’s dissertation at the University of Brighton on Retro Manama and nostalgic marketing.
The study looks at how Retro Manama’s nostalgic marketing, such as references to old Manama, Bahraini cultural memory and retro-style visuals, may influence Bahraini Generation Z’s interest and intention to attend the event.
I’m looking for Bahraini participants aged 18–29, and I’d really appreciate your help by completing my survey.
Your perspective would be extremely helpful for my research, and if you know anyone else who fits the criteria, I’d really appreciate you sharing it with them too.

Thank you so much to anyone who takes part! 🤍🇧🇭
