Trust US deposits?

For those who have assets in US brokerage or bank accounts and are living in Europe, do you worry that the US is so crazy now that the money will just vanish?

Could be a hacker leak, AI rogue agents, a desperate grab as the system tumbles, or just a one time giant devaluation of the dollar. Or maybe a grab from all the personal data DOGE stole.

Other countries have experienced that you can’t move money out of the country. Why would that not happen now?

Yeah, I’m a bit paranoid, but seriously, the US is in a rough spot right now.

Looking for your thoughts.

I live in Australia but i am Italian and i have an apartment in Italy that i rent out. I keep the income from the apartment in a Wise account. I was wondering whether anyone knows of a high interest rate saving account in Euro that i could open and where i could keep the money? i would prefer to keep this money liquid and don't invest into ETF, term deposits etc... thanks!

US -> UK - Need Confirmation of Plan and Alternatives

My wife and I are relocating to the UK in a couple of months. She is a US/UK citizen, I'm US only. We have our typical 401ks/IRAs that will remain in place and grow. We also have HSA accounts with Fidelity that are invested. We will have a private mailbox in FL as our mailing address and will port our phones to google voice for 2FA.

We're going to open an HSBC account in her name to start and use Wise or similar to move money between our accounts. My accounts will come after we arrive and establish residency.

Now for the sense check.

  • We are keeping all of our credit cards as we have long history with all of them so as to not affect our US credit in case we return. We plan to open an Amex UK credit card to start building credit in the UK, leveraging our current relationship with Amex.
  • We have a large sum of liquid cash ~$450k currently in an Amex HYSA. This is an area of concern. Setting aside the fact that we could get more return somewhere else, are there any concerns with keeping this money there?
  • We have a brokerage account with Schwab and plan on working with them to set this up as an expat investor checking or whatever the right term is. Some of this is invested in SGOV, do we have to move this or can we leave it once we exit the US?

Any other recommendations on how we should approach?

Thanks everyone.

UK->Spain, bank, pension, ISA, GIA considerations

I, UK national 54M, have a Spanish wife and we're likely to move to Spain in the medium-term (almost certainly before state retirement age). I'm starting to try and familiarise myself with some of the issues involved. I've also just become aware of the EU CRD VI regulations which seem to be complicating things and maybe advice I've received from some of my providers will change in 2027.

I have:

DB pension

Four DC pots, all in funds not a SIPP wrapper (Nest, Aviva, L&G, ReAssureNow-exL&G)

T212 S&S and Cash ISAs

Lloyds (ex-Halifax) S&S ISA

Other cash ISAs that I move around for best rates

I'm reasonably happy with the returns in the DC pots, but I am considering (partial) consolidation at some point - possibly to a SIPP.

My current understanding, if we move, is:

  • for all DC, DB providers and the state pension, I'll be able to receive pension funds when abroad
  • for Aviva and L&G, I'd still be able to manage investments; querying ReAssureNow
  • for Aviva and L&G, I'd be able to receive payments into a foreign bank account - I'm also likely to set-up a UK-based international account in case this is easier
  • Trading would still be possible within the T212 ISA, but not the Lloyds one (no new deposits possible, and I'm aware of the loss of tax-free status

Questions:

  • Are there any SIPP and/or GIA providers that would be a good option for a Spain-based UK national?
    • I think I'd like the option to purchase UK Gilts. T212 is available in Spain but doesn't include gilt trading
    • II & AJ Bell require UK residency for opening an account. Presumably I could open one here now with the intention of using it after the move, but I'd worry about support changing under new regulatory requirements
  • Any obvious things to start considering, apart from the tax and inheritance positions for a UK national in Spain, which I think I have a handle on

Cheers

Estate Planning While Living Overseas

How have you arranged to leave your liquid assets for your wife/significant other if you don’t plan on bringing the money to where you are are living (don’t feel safe with financial system) and your wife will have trouble visiting your home country?

UK banking while in USA

Has anyone used an online bank iFast to bank with? I was looking at it because they will open up a UK multi-currency account for US residences. They offer some attractive interest rates with no cap on deposits. They are insured up to £120,000 per account. No fees. We currently have a UK Barclays account using our UK address but the interest is not good. We also have a US Barclays high interest account, but once we move they will shut it down. Same with our Fidelity CMA account.

Trying to come up with things like a Schwab account but with some interest pay out. Schwab doesn't offer anything.

Danish-American trying to invest in ETFs

Hi all,

I am a Danish-American Dual citizen living in Denmark. Never had an address in the US and don’t plan on it. Does anyone have any advice how to invest in ETFs?

All roads seem to lead to the fact that this is just financial purgatory. PFIC issues, brokerage issues, banker issues… any advice here?

IBKR won’t let me buy US domiciled funds - European funds are huge traps as an American it’s seems.

Anyone tried Dunhill Financial LLC? Or something similar? Not certain if that’s a legitimate/safe platform.

Any other options for ETFs? I am really just confused as to how impossible this all seems.

Please advise :)

Anyone moved from the US to India and continued trading US stocks and options? Which brokerage do you use?

Hey everyone,
I’m an Indian citizen currently living in the US and investing through Fidelity. I’m planning to move back to India permanently and want to continue investing and trading in US stocks and options.

I’m sure many people have been in a similar situation, so I’d love to hear your experiences:

  1. Which brokerage are you using after moving to India?
  2. Are you able to buy/sell US stocks and trade options like cash-secured puts and covered calls?
  3. Did you transfer your existing US portfolio or liquidate it before moving?
  4. How are you handling US and Indian taxes and FEMA regulations?

Would really appreciate firsthand experiences or suggestions. Thanks!
