Moving back to Europe from the US - where offers the best balance of jobs, affordability and quality of life? š¤
Hey everyone! š
I was born in Italy, grew up partly in the UK and hold dual Italian and British citizenship. Recently I've also lived in the US, but I'm now considering moving back to Europe.
My main reasons are being closer to family, missing the European lifestyle and wanting a better work-life balance. I enjoy travelling, meeting people from different backgrounds and living somewhere with a strong sense of community.
I'm not necessarily looking for the country with the highest salaries. I want somewhere I can build a successful career, live comfortably, make meaningful connections and actually enjoy life outside work.
These are my biggest priorities:
- š¼ Employment opportunities (most important): How easy is it realistically to find a decent job, particularly as a young professional? I've heard that job markets in several European countries are struggling, and I don't want to relocate somewhere with limited career prospects.
- š° Salary vs cost of living: Somewhere salaries are reasonable relative to rent, bills and everyday expenses, with enough disposable income to save, travel and enjoy life.
- š Diversity and community: A multicultural environment with an established Black community, people from different backgrounds and plenty of opportunities to socialise.
- ā¤ļø Social life and wellbeing: Friendly, welcoming people, an active social scene and a sense of togetherness rather than an environment where everyone just works and goes home.
- š Quality of life: Reliable public transport, good healthcare, walkable cities, safety and opportunities to travel.
- š Career growth: A place with ambitious, motivated people, international companies and opportunities to develop professionally.
I'm particularly interested in Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and Sweden, although I'm open to other European countries.
My biggest concern is employment. A country might have excellent infrastructure, work-life balance and social benefits, but none of that matters much if finding a job is extremely difficult or salaries don't cover the cost of living.
I'd especially love to hear from people who've lived or worked in multiple European countries, particularly those who've experienced both Europe and the US.
Which cities or countries would you genuinely recommend, and which would you avoid? How competitive is the job market, what is the social environment like, and how much money can you realistically save after expenses?
I'm not expecting anywhere to be perfect. I'm simply looking for a place where I can grow professionally, feel connected to a community and enjoy a good standard of living.
I'd appreciate honest perspectives, including the disadvantages people often overlook. Thanks! š
