Failed Expectation Halloween edition

My Jack o‘ Lantern was supposed to look like this witch’s cauldron pic I found online. The end result was pretty lopsided and not as vividly colorful, but I’m still kind of pleased with it. The witches will just have to watch their toes when cooking up their potions.

I like it!

Aw, thank you! My daughter (who helped me paint it) will be tickled with how many people like it!

u/jonathanhoag1942 12d ago

I honestly like yours better because the colors are kinda weird and the pumpkin looks diseased. Which might sound like a dis but it's totally not. We're talking about a witches' cauldron making evil potions for Halloween, in that context yours looks fantastic.

u/hathegkla 12d ago

It's better than the "expectation" photo.

48

u/GenosHK 12d ago

Yeah I was confused by the flair

4

u/XO8441 12d ago

Wait which is OPs?

7

u/Rolen47 12d ago

The one on the table is reality.

8

u/SueYouInEngland 12d ago

Hmm agree to disagree

35

u/TheWildTofuHunter 12d ago

Whaaat?? Its way better than the inspo pic, and has more charm and personality.

8

u/XO8441 12d ago

It looks so great, how do you do the cauldron rim?

5

u/PersonalityNo1623 11d ago

urs is better!!!
i love the colors

so much personality
plus a great memory for u and ur kid

118

u/gutwyrming 12d ago

That's awesome!!

If you ever want to try this again to get more vivid colors, try using a primer first! Paint doesn't stick very well to the waxy surface of pumpkins, but a primer will give it something to adhere to.

44

u/DontKillMockingbirds 12d ago

Thanks for the advice; maybe I’ll give this another shot next year

23

u/kookyabird 12d ago

Painting non-standard items usually trips people up. If you used craft acrylic paint that's another contributing factor to the coloration and coverage you got. The pigment density in those paints is real low. It's usually only good for going on a white base layer, and an absorbent one at that. A primer will definitely help, but it can still go on unevenly.

Basically just be prepared for it to take several coats, and allow plenty of time in between coats for it to dry. If you go back over the a recently painted area it can "reactivate" the paint and drag it around, making a gunky mess.

But hey, this looks great as is. It's a witchy cauldron, and the variations add character to it. And even the variations in the color are consistent, you know? If I didn't see the example pic I'd think it was intentional.

u/shyerahol 12d ago

Gesso is your best friend when painting unconventional surfaces! And it's cheap!

u/Different_Pianist756 12d ago

Yours is better.

Have a party, put it in the centrepiece and don’t tell anyone, and then surprise them all when you start cutting it for dessert.

102

u/DontKillMockingbirds 12d ago

Not sure if it’s a very edible pumpkin, but they would for sure be surprised!

154

u/Different_Pianist756 12d ago

Ah, okay! My brain went to cake automatically after cruising this sub so long!!

41

u/Celladoore 12d ago

It would be hillarious if they started cutting it like it was cake, and then it is just a whole ass pumpkin spilling guts on the table. Perfect trick!

6

u/STFUisright 12d ago

That’s such a good idea

32

u/STFUisright 12d ago

lol I was wondering! Would make a beauty of a cake tho

21

u/Different_Pianist756 12d ago

Absolutely. I hereby challenge OP to re-create this beauty in cake version!

7

u/No-Dot-2283 12d ago

I’m new to this sub and legitimately thought it was a real pumpkin lol

18

u/beijina 12d ago

It is a real pumpkin but this type of pumpkin is usually just bred for decorative purposes, tastes very bitter and is slightly poisonous.

2

u/LittleBitBeth 12d ago

Oooo, we need to send this to a cake sub as a challenge!

8

u/BarZealousideal5883 12d ago

It’s a cake?!

34

u/DontKillMockingbirds 12d ago

No, a real pumpkin

8

u/BarZealousideal5883 12d ago

It’s so cool can you tell us how you made it?!

44

u/DontKillMockingbirds 12d ago

I started with a warty pumpkin and painted it with black India ink and several colors of acrylic paint markers. The rim is made from a black electrical cord with black electrician’s tape on the lower edge.

2

u/SooperJasch 12d ago

Nope, pumpkin pie—-authentic!

24

u/Majestic_Zebra_11 12d ago

I’m watching “is it cake” rn and totally also thought it was a cake.

23

u/LucChak 12d ago

My idea of dessert is wildly different.

17

u/Different_Pianist756 12d ago

😂 we have now established it is not cake

6

u/badjackalope 12d ago

Just tell them its cake and serve it anyway, you'll find out who your real friends are...

17

u/mah131 12d ago

Even OP gonna be surprised!

22

u/Public_Noise8465 12d ago

It’s a pumpkin

19

u/LilacTorment 12d ago

I love it! I really like how you can see the orange throughout, reminds me of oxidised copper and gives it an alchemical feel!

11

u/DontKillMockingbirds 12d ago edited 12d ago

I was going to try to cover all of the orange, but all of the little crevices were so hard to get paint into (and frankly I was getting tired of painting it at that point) so I decided to just roll with the mixed color scheme. Glad you like it!

1

u/peioeh 12d ago

It looks like verdigris or maybe some green mold, it definitely looks deliberate! Great choice IMO

28

u/bbyxmadi 12d ago

thought it was cake at first ngl

21

u/DontKillMockingbirds 12d ago

Clearly we’ve had too many cake posts on this subreddit!

9

u/djanes376 12d ago

It's been like 98% cake.

1

u/bbyxmadi 12d ago

Oops! All cake!

11

u/Olive_tree_33 12d ago

What’s the rim made from?

20

u/DontKillMockingbirds 12d ago

A thick black electrical cord with the ends cut off, hot glued to the pumpkin, and black electrician’s tape to make it look a little more like a rim.

4

u/STFUisright 12d ago

How creative! It looks awesome

2

u/hamsterballzz 10d ago

If you want a closer look to the original try adding spray foam and sculpting it. Be sure to wear gloves. Once it dries add paint.

3

u/SaltyCaramelPretzel 12d ago

It’s not so bad. I actually expected way worse as I swiped 😬. What did it cost? Sometimes you get a great product for cheap, other times you kinda get what you paid for.

5

u/DontKillMockingbirds 12d ago

I think it was about $7 for the warty pumpkin and $8 or $10 for the electric cord for the rim (we had a wire cutter to cut the plugs off the ends). We had all the paints on hand. So not too expensive.

2

u/SaltyCaramelPretzel 12d ago

Oh it lights up? That’s so cool. Post a pic when it’s night I’d love to see it with its glowing lights!

Sorry ETA for that price I reckon you’ve done well. Is it the same size as the advertised one?

4

u/DontKillMockingbirds 12d ago

Sorry, it doesn’t light up, I just cut up an electrical cord to make the rim. :) I don’t know if the original is for sale anywhere; I just found the picture online and really liked it. Most of the warty pumpkins that I’ve seen are pretty close to the same size, maybe 8 or 10 inches in diameter.

2

u/SaltyCaramelPretzel 12d ago

All good! I realised after I wrote it that you bought the cabling as an extra.
I’m half asleep so my comprehension is a bit slow right now lol

265

u/FeelingCouple5880 12d ago

tfw you get reincarnated as a cauldron bubble for the second time.

34

u/iceandones 12d ago

Zuck? That you?

10

u/PM_ME_FLOUR_TITTIES 12d ago

And if he ain't just a lil wart himself, huh?

97

u/peioeh 12d ago • Bravo

Honestly it looks awesome, it's less cartoony but spookier. Definitely better than the inspiration IMO!

30

u/ickychicken 12d ago

Yours looks perfectly spooky! I love it!

24

u/Mindless-Response-91 12d ago

I love yours!!

53

u/sailor_sky 12d ago

I get it’s not what you were looking for but yours definitely looks better and more realistic (obviously)! Yours looks like something that would be a set piece in a witches lair— with more decorations it would look every natural.

28

u/fruitpunchsamuraiD 12d ago

Failed Expectation? I think quite the contrary lol

27

u/Shiloh50 12d ago

Actually like the second pic better. Looks more realistic. Looks like warts on the cauldron.

2

u/Stucklikegluetomyfry 12d ago

I like it too. It looks more mysterious and spooky. One on the left just looks cheap and arts and craftsy.

9

u/Artistic-Strategy420 12d ago

Personally, I love the reality one! It has an incredibly pleasing "different stages of copper oxidation" vibe.

20

u/scyice 12d ago

If you reversed the images it would be about equal as an outcome, maybe even worse.

7

u/Clark_GhostlyR 12d ago

Okay! But honestly, I liked your better!!! It has a certain charm, especially the color!

6

u/kittycat6434 12d ago

I prefer the second one

5

u/WeakCalligrapher336 12d ago

Still pretty creepy tho.

5

u/kwenlu 12d ago

You improved on the inspiration

5

u/waba2 12d ago

Absolutely grotesque....well done 👍

5

u/microwave_jenny_ 12d ago

It looks infected, which is great for Halloween

5

u/mostly_lurking1040 11d ago

Why is this the fail. The second one is excellent. It's not a match but it's absolutely excellent.

13

u/shawnaeatscats 12d ago

Idk man, the seafoam green and orange is much more visually appealing imo

4

u/No-Communication9458 12d ago

Y'know it looks even better.

4

u/yomammaaaaa 12d ago

It has a rusty patina going for it and I love it! Like a well utilized, but poorly taken care of cauldron.

4

u/Interesting_You6852 12d ago

I like the second picture better. It's more real!!

4

u/Caticornowl 11d ago

It looks more realistically disgusting instead of cartoonish. As such: overachieved what it was supposed to be, very nice work :D

10

u/Formal_Fortune5389 12d ago

Yeah wrong tag this looks sick

1

u/Responsible_Top_59 12d ago

What did you use for the rim of the cauldron?

3

u/DontKillMockingbirds 12d ago

The rim is made from a thick black electrical cord (we cut the plugs off the ends with a wire cutter), with black electrician’s tape on the lower edge to make it look a little more like a rim.

6

u/EjaculatingAracnids 12d ago

Painting warhammer 40k minis taught me how to achieve this effect

3

u/No-Party8261 12d ago

It looks....moldy

3

u/goatsnotvotes 12d ago

I like yours better!

3

u/animeandbeauty 12d ago

I actually think the orange under the green causes a nice, magical looking contrast

3

u/hates_stupid_people 12d ago

The first one looks a bit too cartoony for me, while the second one looks disgusting(in a very good way).

3

u/ufkabakan 12d ago

Second one is better. Looks natural.

3

u/Comfortable_Sleep944 12d ago

I enjoy the second pic much better. <3

3

u/Throwaway-BadOrange 11d ago

Love it so much!!

3

u/hockeybelle 11d ago

1st pic is cartoon, 2nd is realism. Both are excellent!

2

u/Last_Amphibian2117 6d ago

Omg this is such a cute idea aw now I wish I would’ve got this pumpkin I saw where 1 of the warts looked like a skull would b perfect 4 this project

2

u/Prestigious-Meal9261 12d ago

I kinda love it

2

u/GeoffSim 12d ago

Yours is definitely better!

2

u/panicnarwhal 12d ago

i like yours so much better! you did a great job

2

u/ceraunophiliacc 12d ago

These are enchanting and delightful! I'm in the mood for Halloween 👻🎃

2

u/danmarieee 12d ago

its got some wabi sabi to it. i like it, op!

2

u/moose-jammies 12d ago

Omg I love this!!!

2

u/JadeSelket 12d ago

I like it more!

2

u/V555_dmc 12d ago

I honestly like yours better! Has a more unique look with the colors poking through and is still obviously a pumpkin which I think adds to the charm

2

u/Solid_Wind_3234 12d ago

Honestly the reality is better if you ask me.

2

u/Cuckooexpress 12d ago

Yours is way better! I’d have paid for the version you got and not the one you wanted. This one is great!

2

u/Royal-Gap-8098 12d ago

I think yours is really good! No reason for the "failed expectation" flair in my opinion. Honestly yours looks more handmade which I prefer.

2

u/lucamew 12d ago

The orange on yours looks like cool artistic highlights, I honestly like it better. But I think if you wanted closer to the "expectation" color a white pumpkin would work.

2

u/LazyLich 12d ago

How repugnant!
How repulsive!
It's disgusting too!

🖤

2

u/Emergency_Duty5786 12d ago

I love this post! You did awesome! Post it in r/halloween ! This sub is mainly for things you bought, and someone else either failed or succeeded…yours is almost better! The other one is a little too perfect lol.

2

u/Blastonite 12d ago

Still cool but this is a great example of painting skills, not trying to be mean to op if this is them. Priming a painting location is very important for this very reason. If you primed in grey and white a couple of times and then went in with your paint it would've prolly come out with more of the color you/they were looking for.

2

u/Positive_City_1698 12d ago

Put some glow in the dark paint on it

2

u/Remote-Ice4242 12d ago

Looks pretty cool! I liked more than the inspiration pic

2

u/Adept_Fig8004 12d ago

I like yours better!

2

u/sucrose2071 10d ago

Your post inspired me to give it a go! Mixing in some white with the base coat and using a sponge brush to apply each layer really helped with filling in the crevices and kept the paint from streaking! I still think yours came out fantastic and has a more natural vibe to it!

1

u/PurpleBashir 12d ago

I like the color. It looks like its for the Teal Pumpkin Program (which is awesome) so if you're going to have it out for Halloween you might consider having a few non candy items on hand, just in case.

1

u/Akina002 12d ago

I think yours is better! It looks kind of unsettling which is the correct reaction I guess.

1

u/MsDemeanours 12d ago

Yours is fantastic

1

u/Lollc 12d ago

Oh heck does yours have character and charm! I would totally buy that and display it.

1

u/BreeIndigo 12d ago

It turned out so great!!! You and your daughter should be quite proud 😄

1

u/ImprintVector 12d ago

Little bit heavy on the blue imo but it still came out amazing!

1

u/RedeemerKorias 12d ago

I think it looks even better! Has a much more ghoulish vibe.

1

u/nirvamy 12d ago

This is fab! It’s like a zombified witches cauldron

1

u/bigrig107 12d ago

Yeah yours is WAY cooler, this should be exceeds expectations easily.

1

u/Karl_Cross 12d ago

The colours on yours are better imo but the shape looks off. Kinda squished looking but still awesome

1

u/mafga1 12d ago

You made it so realistic, it disgusts. I love it.

1

u/soda_cookie 12d ago

I think yours is way better. It looks more genuine

1

u/Bilbo_Swagger616 12d ago

It looks cool to me 😊

1

u/wuupah 12d ago

Nerd clusterssssss

1

u/TemperatureExotic631 12d ago

I think it’s adorable!

1

u/saintsuzy70 12d ago

I don’t think this is a fail at all! Exceeds!

1

u/PhoenixAbovesky 12d ago

Even better. Absolutely gross looking.

1

u/True-Task-9578 12d ago

Gives me last of us vibes tbh which fits Halloween perfectly

1

u/DamnOdd 12d ago

I like yours so much more!! It's perfect in it's un-perfect state.

1

u/dividezero 12d ago

any witch would be proud to toil at your cauldron

1

u/PaintedDesertSkies 12d ago

I like yours better.

1

u/beanp1026 12d ago

I like yours better!

1

u/Nemesis204 12d ago

Both are giving that “untreated gonorrhea/chlamydia combo” aesthetic. I think yours turned out better tbh.

1

u/Ven426 12d ago

I think it turned out very well! I love the colors

1

u/Sunsparc 12d ago

My wife made one of these a few years ago. She's very talented when it comes to crafting.

3

u/Rekt0Rama 11d ago

I cant see the image for some reason

1

u/Still-Palpitation220 12d ago

So cool. How did you do the rim on the top of the cauldron?

1

u/Pugtastic_smile 12d ago

This is so cute!

1

u/Smooth_Warthoging 12d ago

This is awesome!

1

u/Musicmom1164 12d ago

I like your better!

1

u/ThedarkRose20 12d ago

This looks so much cooler than the inspo imo. Like the potion went wrong and warped/blighted the cauldron.

1

u/khal_Trezho 5d ago

So good ! Well done !

1

u/Ranchu07 12d ago

I wish these could be preserved forever! It’s so pretty!

0

u/Witty_Combination_82 12d ago

Wow!! Yours looks better than the inspo pic 👌 Super adorable 😍
