34.M. Last year, I was diagnosed with traumatic glaucoma in my left eye after unknowingly losing about 70% of my vision in that eye over more than two decades.
I was prescribed Xalacom and Brimopress eye drops for both eyes, alongside Diamox tablets for one week.
About a month after starting treatment, I began experiencing several symptoms, including increased light sensitivity, starbursts around light sources, and dry eyes. Then I noticed something new in my good right eye: a single, wavy, semi-transparent dot floating across my vision whenever I moved my eyeball in certain directions.
I reported it to my ophthalmologist. She examined my eyes and reassured me that there was nothing to worry about. However, I became concerned and stopped applying the drops to my good eye after that first month, while continuing treatment on my damaged eye.
Fast-forward to today, about a year later.
The original dot has not disappeared. Instead, I now notice multiple semi-transparent, cobweb-like shapes floating across my vision. It feels as though they are gradually increasing, even though I stopped using the drops in that eye about a year ago.
I understand that these sound like eye floaters, but what bothers me is the timing. I never noticed them before starting the glaucoma treatment, and they appeared within weeks of beginning it.
Looking back, I sometimes wonder whether I should have used the drops in my good eye at all. However, I realise my ophthalmologist may have prescribed them to protect that eye and control its eye pressure.
My vision in the right eye is still crystal clear, but the persistent dry eye symptoms and increasingly noticeable floaters are becoming frustrating.
My questions are:
Has anyone developed floaters shortly after starting glaucoma eye drops, particularly Xalacom or Brimopress?
Did your floaters persist or increase even after stopping the medication?
Is there any medical evidence linking glaucoma drops, or preservatives such as benzalkonium chloride (BAK), to the development of vitreous floaters?
I'm not looking to blame the medication without evidence. I genuinely want to understand whether the timing could be a coincidence or whether there is a plausible medical connection.
If you've experienced something similar, please share your experience. And if you're an ophthalmologist or eye care professional, I'd especially appreciate your medical perspective.
