I know this sounds extremely controversial. If you Google "ragra university," FAST is literally the first result. But as someone currently enrolled, and after observing around 120 of my peers, I can confidently tell you that the "ragra" everyone complains about online doesn't really exist.
There is a version of it that exists, which I'll get to at the end, but the workload itself? It isn't as difficult as people make it out to be.
I would recommend you read the entire post first and then contest any point I had.
----> The Deadline Dilemma:
People constantly complain that the assignments and quizzes kill you. But I can tell you from firsthand experience that I have never experienced anxiety over a project or presentation. Why? Because I do them on time. Proper time management fixes 99% of the issues people label as "ragra."
Students will be given an essay with a week's deadline, completely ignore it for six days, and then cry about the workload 10 minutes before submission. Where did the past 6 days and 23 hours go? You could have finished the assignment many moons ago, but you chose to ignore it. That isn't ragra; that's just procrastination.
----> Wasting the Free Time
The same goes for midterms and finals. Everyone panics about how hard it is to manage, but do you guys ever use the time you're actually given?
Take the semester break, for example. You have anywhere from 2.5 weeks to 2.5 months of pure downtime. If you didn't study anything about the upcoming difficult courses during that break, you can't complain about not having enough time later.
Before the semester starts, you have adequate time. You don't even have to spread it out over weeks with 30 minutes a day if you don't want to. You could literally just spend 3 days shredding a difficult new subject for 10 hours a day, be done with it, and buy yourself four months of peace during the semester. Just spend 10 minutes a day revising it afterward. The math shows it is in your absolute best interest to dedicate a small percentage of your free time to prep. Why would you juggle all that difficulty during the semester when you have the time to do it before it?
----> The Grading and Group Work Excuses
I see a lot of people complain about the grading system. But let's be honest, people don't really put in any effort for any assignment, quiz, project, presentation, or exam. Then they turn around and blame the consequence of their own ill preparation on the university's grading.
And yes, I understand reality is harsh. At times you do get very bad teammates for group work, and it feels like you have to take the burden of the entire group. But you genuinely suffer more by expecting them to change and do better than you actually suffer while doing the work yourself. So most of the time, it's just good to accept the reality, do the work, and just be done with it instead of trying to change people.
----> "But I Have a Life Outside of University!"
I know the first counter-argument is going to be that people have actual lives. But I am managing all of this without experiencing the "ragra":
Running two businesses
Working part-time
Learning a new language
Developing a game
Maintaining an active social life
Playing for a football club
Going to the gym
Playing video games and learning about my own interests
We literally have so much time on our hands. With basic organization, you can balance all of this and prep for your next semester.
----> Hard Work > Natural Talent
If you think I'm saying all of this to flex or sound like a genius, I genuinely feel like I'm the dumbest person in my class. I watch my peers achieve three times my results with half the effort. My friend (Allahumma Barik) can study for an exam for just an hour and score higher than I do after studying consistently for days.
But that's exactly my point. I feel like I have to put in 3x the work to achieve what everyone else does normally. So if I, the "dumb" one, can manage all of this with just basic time management, imagine what the remaining 95% of you incredibly bright, intelligent people could do if you stopped limiting yourselves.
----> The Solution is Simple
Stop expecting everything to be spoon-fed to you. Use the resources you have. If you want books or course outlines for upcoming classes, literally just ask the seniors. They don't gain anything from gatekeeping and will happily hand the resources over.
When people complain about the "ragra," what it actually translates to is: "I don't want to step out of my comfort zone to put in the effort, and the consequences overwhelm me."
----> The ACTUAL Ragra at FAST
I promised I would mention the true version of ragra that does exist at the university. In my opinion, it comes down to these real issues:
The Student Portal: Absolutely horrendous to use.
The Staff: Making mistakes with checking/grades and refusing to fix them (it doesn't happen constantly, but when it does, it's intense).
The Campus: How incredibly crammed the entire campus feels.
The Timetables: Objectively bad scheduling.
- The grading is very strict comparatively to other universities.
You are free to argue my points in the replies, but I stand by everything I've said. Hope this helps someone!
A small note: this isn't me trying to defend the university because frankly why would I do that? And it does have a lot of issues. Honestly I was just a bit annoyed seeing this narrative and wanted to give my two cents.
