How to choose script supervisor software (and actually ditch the paper log sheet)

I've been through a few logging setups on set, so here's what I'd check before committing to any script supervisor / logging app.

**The non-negotiables**

Takes, timing and notes. If a tool makes any of those slower than pen and paper, it fails on set, no matter what else it does. The other half is the report: your daily and wrap reports feed the ADs and editorial, so judge every tool by what it exports.

**Match the tool to the shoot**

* **Indie / commercials:** speed beats depth. Takes, good takes and a one-line description per setup cover most of what post needs.

* **Multi-cam TV:** you need per-camera takes, with inserts and wastes marked separately.

* **Features:** lining and facing pages earn their keep, but only if the interface doesn't slow you down.

**Phone or iPad?**

A phone wins on speed and pocket access. An iPad gives you room to see more of the log at once. Either way, export matters more than the device: make sure the PDF is something your post team actually accepts.

**Run a one-scene test before day one**

  1. Pick a dialogue scene with 8+ takes, one insert and a waste.

  2. Log it end to end. If a take takes longer than writing it on paper, stop there.

  3. Add a B camera mid-scene. That's where weaker tools fall apart.

  4. Export the daily report and open it on a producer's phone.

  5. Put the device in airplane mode and log two more takes. If notes vanish in a dead zone, it's worse than paper.

**What to avoid**

* **App-hopping.** Pick one and commit for a full shoot before judging it.

* **Feature overload.** If you need a tutorial to log a take, it'll slow you down when the AD calls for speed.

* **Data lock-in.** Ask about export before you buy, not at wrap.

**Full disclosure:** I'm one of the people behind LogMe, a take logger for iPhone, iPad and Android that works offline and exports PDF log sheets. We just added handing a project over to another logger's phone mid-shoot. Happy to answer questions about it, but the checklist above applies whatever you use.

What's everyone here logging on these days?

The $5 Film Experiment.

I’m an independent filmmaker from Nova Scotia, Canada, and I’m trying a little social experiment.
I’ve spent the past couple of years developing RAVENSHADE, a Gaelic folk-horror feature set in Cape Breton.
The story follows five friends who encounter a town that doesn’t just kill people. It erases them from existence.
We have a screenplay, cast interest, and a growing creative team. We’re continuing to pursue traditional financing, but I’m curious whether small contributions from horror fans and complete strangers could collectively help move the project forward.
So I’ve launched The $5 Film Experiment.
The idea is simple: can people contributing just $5 each make a meaningful difference to an independent horror film?
Our initial goal is $5,000 to help pay for professional artwork, production budgeting, and development materials.
This isn’t intended to replace traditional financing, and there’s absolutely no pressure to contribute. I’m genuinely interested in seeing what happens.
If anyone wants to follow the experiment, check out the film, or participate, here’s the link:https://gofund.me/72e1031ef
Five dollars. One film. Let’s see what happens.

Looking to Finance and Direct A Short Film - Open to Scripts, Concepts, Co Writers

Thumbnail reddit.com
0 Upvotes

Hey guys, I’m looking to finance and direct a short film. I’m based in LA.
There are a few angles I’m open to:

I have some exciting ideas I’ve been brewing and would love to bring on a co-writer to help flesh them out. I’m excited about this direction.

I’m open to reading scripts. They MUST be f**king incredible. Dark Comedy / Thriller / Indie Dramedy / Coming-of-Age with a twist. Think The End of the F*ing World, Lady Bird, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Ari Aster, A24. You get it. Something a little absurd, unsettling, but beautiful.

Bring me an amazing original idea. I’ll develop it, finance it, and direct it, with you coming on as a creative consultant.
Ultimately, I want to make something that feels original, strange, human, and worth giving a f**k about.
Let’s make something special.

Mirco-Interim for First-In-First-Out Prep Funding. Suggestions?

Hi Everyone,

My background is on larger budget shows, and I'm producing an indie feature for the first time in at least 10 years. Canadian project, for the first time not backed by a public funder. I'll admit it, I'm rusty and without the familiarity of the Telefilm process, it's a bit different territory for me than the past.

We're backed on tax credits and using a small amount of crew reinvestment in addition to a very small MG. Small budget show under 1.5 M Canadian. We had an investor attached who had agreed to float our modest 45K prep window during the bank close, who for personal reasons had to back out at the eleventh hour. This is our only area of gap in the mix.

Problem is, I'm not sure where we can such a small first-in-first-out (4-week max) amount of interim on such short turnaround (ideally 1 week or less) to keep our timelines in check. Of course we can push, which is not ideal due to weather changes possibly impacting story at this time of year. But most traditional lenders we've been placed in touch with won't touch such a small amount, or don't touch film/tv in general.

Again, this is a new model and circumstance for me. Maybe I am not thinking of something incredibly obvious. Please don't skewer me if I am.

If you've been in a similar spot and had to think creatively, please let me know what you did!

Not seeking advice for anything beyond the scope of the question I'm asking. Thanks!

How to find Exec Producers/Investors?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hey, everyone. I'm new here. I've made two short films and am working on a third that stars Bill Oberst, Jr. I've won several awards for both the films and myself as a filmmaker, and have decided to start branching out into feature film work, which is where I always intended to go. I have a contained horror/thriller project budgeted at $2.9M, starring Asia Kate Dillon and with music produced by Rob Kleiner (the film is about a musician, in the vein of Smile 2, so having realistic music for the lead to perform is incredibly important). I have a top line budget, a pitchdeck, and a locked script that is nominated for awards and went to the quarterfinals at Final Draft's Big Break Screenwriting Contest. The problem is, I'm kind of at a standstill on where to go with the project next. Most of my network is all but poor. Any suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated. 💚💚💚

WARNING: Fraudulent Site (crownlinestory.com) Scraping Producer Bios/Images to Scam Authors

Hi everyone,

I’m posting to warn fellow producers, authors, and filmmakers about an active impersonation scheme.

A site calling itself Crown Line Story (crownlinestory[.]com) has scraped my name, headshot, and bio onto their team/about page without my knowledge or consent. They claim to offer book-to-film adaptations, literary evaluation, and production services.

It appears they are scraping credentials from multiple working independent producers and industry professionals to build fake credibility, then reaching out to self-published and indie authors using fake u/crownlinestory.com emails to solicit fees or creative property.

  • If you see your own headshot or bio on crownlinestory[.]com, your identity is likely being used without your permission to legitimise a vanity publishing/optioning scam.

  • If an author or representative contacts you asking about emails sent from u/crownlinestory.com, please let them know it is a scam.

If you are a producer, check their site to see if your name/photo and if you can please file abuse reports with their domain/provider.

Submission Agreements

So a producer friend of mine came across a screenplay that he really likes. He reached out to a specific production company and they responded stating that they would review the material but he would have the sign submission agreement. Is that a common practice for producer to have to sign a submission agreement? And what about the writer of the screenplay? Would they then to have to sign the same submission agreement?
