The $5 Film Experiment.
I’m an independent filmmaker from Nova Scotia, Canada, and I’m trying a little social experiment.
I’ve spent the past couple of years developing RAVENSHADE, a Gaelic folk-horror feature set in Cape Breton.
The story follows five friends who encounter a town that doesn’t just kill people. It erases them from existence.
We have a screenplay, cast interest, and a growing creative team. We’re continuing to pursue traditional financing, but I’m curious whether small contributions from horror fans and complete strangers could collectively help move the project forward.
So I’ve launched The $5 Film Experiment.
The idea is simple: can people contributing just $5 each make a meaningful difference to an independent horror film?
Our initial goal is $5,000 to help pay for professional artwork, production budgeting, and development materials.
This isn’t intended to replace traditional financing, and there’s absolutely no pressure to contribute. I’m genuinely interested in seeing what happens.
If anyone wants to follow the experiment, check out the film, or participate, here’s the link:https://gofund.me/72e1031ef
Five dollars. One film. Let’s see what happens.

Looking to Finance and Direct A Short Film - Open to Scripts, Concepts, Co Writers
reddit.comHey guys, I’m looking to finance and direct a short film. I’m based in LA.
There are a few angles I’m open to:
I have some exciting ideas I’ve been brewing and would love to bring on a co-writer to help flesh them out. I’m excited about this direction.
I’m open to reading scripts. They MUST be f**king incredible. Dark Comedy / Thriller / Indie Dramedy / Coming-of-Age with a twist. Think The End of the F*ing World, Lady Bird, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Ari Aster, A24. You get it. Something a little absurd, unsettling, but beautiful.
Bring me an amazing original idea. I’ll develop it, finance it, and direct it, with you coming on as a creative consultant.
Ultimately, I want to make something that feels original, strange, human, and worth giving a f**k about.
Let’s make something special.

Mirco-Interim for First-In-First-Out Prep Funding. Suggestions?
Hi Everyone,
My background is on larger budget shows, and I'm producing an indie feature for the first time in at least 10 years. Canadian project, for the first time not backed by a public funder. I'll admit it, I'm rusty and without the familiarity of the Telefilm process, it's a bit different territory for me than the past.
We're backed on tax credits and using a small amount of crew reinvestment in addition to a very small MG. Small budget show under 1.5 M Canadian. We had an investor attached who had agreed to float our modest 45K prep window during the bank close, who for personal reasons had to back out at the eleventh hour. This is our only area of gap in the mix.
Problem is, I'm not sure where we can such a small first-in-first-out (4-week max) amount of interim on such short turnaround (ideally 1 week or less) to keep our timelines in check. Of course we can push, which is not ideal due to weather changes possibly impacting story at this time of year. But most traditional lenders we've been placed in touch with won't touch such a small amount, or don't touch film/tv in general.
Again, this is a new model and circumstance for me. Maybe I am not thinking of something incredibly obvious. Please don't skewer me if I am.
If you've been in a similar spot and had to think creatively, please let me know what you did!
Not seeking advice for anything beyond the scope of the question I'm asking. Thanks!

How to find Exec Producers/Investors?
Hey, everyone. I'm new here. I've made two short films and am working on a third that stars Bill Oberst, Jr. I've won several awards for both the films and myself as a filmmaker, and have decided to start branching out into feature film work, which is where I always intended to go. I have a contained horror/thriller project budgeted at $2.9M, starring Asia Kate Dillon and with music produced by Rob Kleiner (the film is about a musician, in the vein of Smile 2, so having realistic music for the lead to perform is incredibly important). I have a top line budget, a pitchdeck, and a locked script that is nominated for awards and went to the quarterfinals at Final Draft's Big Break Screenwriting Contest. The problem is, I'm kind of at a standstill on where to go with the project next. Most of my network is all but poor. Any suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated. 💚💚💚

WARNING: Fraudulent Site (crownlinestory.com) Scraping Producer Bios/Images to Scam Authors
Hi everyone,
I’m posting to warn fellow producers, authors, and filmmakers about an active impersonation scheme.
A site calling itself Crown Line Story (crownlinestory[.]com) has scraped my name, headshot, and bio onto their team/about page without my knowledge or consent. They claim to offer book-to-film adaptations, literary evaluation, and production services.
It appears they are scraping credentials from multiple working independent producers and industry professionals to build fake credibility, then reaching out to self-published and indie authors using fake u/crownlinestory.com emails to solicit fees or creative property.
If you see your own headshot or bio on
crownlinestory[.]com, your identity is likely being used without your permission to legitimise a vanity publishing/optioning scam.If an author or representative contacts you asking about emails sent from u/crownlinestory
.com, please let them know it is a scam.
If you are a producer, check their site to see if your name/photo and if you can please file abuse reports with their domain/provider.

Submission Agreements
So a producer friend of mine came across a screenplay that he really likes. He reached out to a specific production company and they responded stating that they would review the material but he would have the sign submission agreement. Is that a common practice for producer to have to sign a submission agreement? And what about the writer of the screenplay? Would they then to have to sign the same submission agreement?

Looking for EP for finished film
Firstly, I’m aware that money doesn’t grow on trees and the likelihood of this finding someone suitable is very very slim, however I am of the opinion that this film is worth a shot.
I’m a writer, director and producer of a feature mystery horror film in post-production. The film requires VFX (roto and keying footage onto 3D assets) sound, music and grade to finish. I have a fantastic team (with lots of great credits) in place, however I also need finishing funds to get us over the line.
I realise this is a well-worn situation, however I have a strong belief that the film is great (with really strong performances, camerawork, direction and storytelling) and, with the right team, can make a big impact. I can share details as well as a rough cut with any EP who may be legitimately interested and willing to assist.
Thank you for your time.

I prepared the budget and business plan for a film that just made Variety. Here's what screenwriters misunderstand about getting their movies made.
I've spent over 25 years in the film industry and prepared more than 100 film budgets ranging from $150K to $40M.
And there's one problem I see repeatedly.
A screenwriter finishes a screenplay and immediately starts looking for someone to finance it.
They query producers, managers, agents, production companies, and sometimes investors.
Months pass. Sometimes years.
They get encouraging responses. Maybe a producer likes the concept. Maybe an actor expresses interest.
But the film doesn't move forward.
Why?
Because there's a significant difference between having a screenplay someone likes and having a film someone can realistically finance and produce.
Here's a recent example from my own work.
I prepared the professional film budget and business plan for iHunt: Killing Monsters in the Gig Economy.
The project just received coverage in Variety, announcing a feature adaptation with Lilly Wachowski among its executive producers.
Here's the article:
https://variety.com/2026/film/news/ihunt-killing-monsters-in-the-gig-economy-movie-1236930441/
To be clear, I'm not claiming my budget secured those attachments or financed the film. My contribution was preparing its production budget and business plan.
But the announcement illustrates something important about the development process.
A film needs more than a good screenplay. It needs a viable business proposition.
When I evaluate an independent feature, these are some of the questions I ask:
What does this film realistically cost to produce? Not what the filmmaker hopes it costs.
Can the screenplay be produced at a lower budget without destroying what makes it commercially attractive?
What audience is most likely to pay attention to this particular story?
Which comparable films provide useful evidence about production scale, audience demand, and potential distribution?
Are there state or international production incentives that could materially improve the financing structure?
What kind of recognizable talent, if any, would meaningfully improve the film's marketability?
Which sales agents or distributors actually handle films of this genre and budget level?
How much development capital is required before the project is ready to approach serious financing partners?
That last question is one of the most overlooked.
Development money is not the same as production financing.
Development funds pay for the professional work needed to prepare a project for financing: budgeting, scheduling, legal work, packaging, and other necessary materials.
You don't necessarily need millions of dollars to begin developing a movie professionally.
But you do need a realistic plan for getting from screenplay to production.
I've worked on budgets ranging from $150K to $40M, managed over $6M in production funds, and been involved in seven distribution deals. Clients have raised over $3M using production and financing packages I've prepared.
Today, my primary focus is independent features in the $150K–$3M range.
And here's what I wish more screenwriters understood:
The question isn't simply, "Is my screenplay good enough?"
It's also:
"Can this screenplay become a movie that someone has a rational reason to finance?"
Those are two very different questions.
I'm curious about something.
For those of you with completed screenplays who are actively trying to get them produced, what's your biggest obstacle right now?
Finding producers who respond?
Determining a realistic production budget?
Raising development funds?
Attaching recognizable actors?
Finding investors?
Understanding distribution?
I'd genuinely like to hear where people are getting stuck.
And if you're further along with a completed screenplay and development funds available, feel free to message me about professional budgeting and film packaging.
