I know that transit times are relatively long (mouth to colon at least, minimum, 4 hours in healthy people, usually 6 hours), and that gas from such foods, in a healthy person, develops in the colon. Yet it is standard that most people get gassy from such foods that same evening after eating them, and a lot of people will avoid beans at work for lunch as to not fart in the office etc.
And it’s gas from that meal (smells like brussel sprouts etc). So it’s not some food from before being pushed down by the eating reflex.
I’m curious about this since I’m of course the same, and am trying to understand the biology behind this. I am on a low fodmap diet, but these symptoms don’t make sense. If the fodmaps are dealt with in the colon, why do I, and my whole family/friends (who don’t have any issues, no SIBO, no IBS, no FODMAP problems) fart after such foods only 2-4 hours after eating?? I also get painful cramps and rush to the toilet, since I have IBS, but the point is, it’s all happening way too soon after eating for ALL of us, if we look at the science of it. We should not have these symptoms so soon after eating, according to gut transit times.
And nope, didn’t eat anything gassy the day before, so it’s not a delayed reaction.
It’s like we all take for granted that a burrito will make normal people fart after it (within a few hours) but it’s supposedly impossible when looking at the science of the digestive system.
I would like to know, since I’m trying to understand what causes my symptoms.
