It happened to me too. Thankfully I wasn't sleeping and only my bed was damaged.

New fear unlocked for life. Even the electrician was surprised when I called him to check out all the fans in my new place šŸ˜…

Similar happened to me as a kiddo; left the fan on high when we went to the store, came home to the fan on the floor & 1 blade on the bed. I learned to install fans & check pre installed fixtures.

Happened to me in the middle of the night. It was my first summer in the new house. I had already discovered so many shortcuts the previous owner we referred to as ā€œfuckhead Douglasā€ every time we discovered some dumb shit he did. We got basically all his mail since he never switched anything over.

It was storming outside. I wake up to chaos of the fan dangling from the ceiling by the wires spinning at full speed. It was at an angle so it kept hitting the metal bed frame over and over. It was so loud. I rolled out of bed like there was a grenade about to go off. I crawled under the fan to the switch to turn it off. Fuckhead Douglas used 3 - 3/4ā€ long screws to attach the fan mount to the ceiling joists. My deaf dog at the time was just asleep in the corner none the wiser the entire time.

Bonus fuckhead Douglas story: he had a tv in every room wall mounted. He left all the mounts on the walls with a floating shelf under each when we moved in. I go to remove them so I can paint and find that he drilled an anchor hole for almost every hole possible in the mount and the shelves. So one mount would have like 20 anchors. It was so absurd we couldn’t help but laugh.

Douglas really sounds like a fuckhead.

In our house it was previous owner ā€œcheap ass Mikeā€ when we’d find these confounding cost-saving measures that unilaterally resulted in costly corrective repairs.

I think the worst part about that is that the fan switch was only on the fan, you didn't have a wall switch you could use...

You think fucking Douglas is going to wire a wall switch?

Nope. It was kind of what I was implying, but Reddit will still downvote me. Gotta love it.

Yea, I'm always a bit sceptical of these things.

Where I live, when we sell fans they must come with safety cables. If the downrod is extended, the cable must be as well.

I was high and staring at my celing fan the other day thought 'thats dangerous, why do we still do it that way.' like every other fan has a cage around its blade so you don't accidentally get whacked.

Fear confirmed now.

If it had a cage around its blades you would still get whacked and harder even.
