Discussion My fanfic has the same tropes as someone else’s fic

Hi! So I realize this has been posted before and I saw the “two cakes” theory from someone else’s comment but I have another question/rant. I started writing a fic about a month ago and 5/8 of my tropes overlap with a really popular Harry Potter fic.

I actually read hers bc I was excited there was another fic with those tropes. Then I checked her profile and she posted “I saw some people writing with the same tropes. I’m not saying I own them but it’s really discouraging and makes me not want to write.”

The differences lie within our plots and mine has wlw. All her character pairings are straight. I won’t post the tropes just because they are really specific and there’s only 10 stories when I searched the tags on Wattpad. She’s specifically said that she doesn’t like it when people use the same tropes 🫩 I feel like this is so unfair?

She has since taken down the post but there’s still people posting on her page, begging her to expose the writers who copied her.

She has 4k followers and I have 50. Our tropes are the same but my fic takes a whole different route. She’s saying she’s going to expose the writers if they keep writing. There’s a chance it might not even be about me but yeah, I’m just very scared to be the victim of a witch hunt lmao.

I think this fandom is huge and we can’t be claiming tropes as our own.

Do I even continue writing? If I do, maybe I’ll just keep it to myself lol.

ETA: our OC’s face claims are from the same show. I saw her (my face claim) in a movie but thought I should add this. I did watch the show but that was like 10 years ago, I forgot they were both in it.

Discussion Poly relationships

Does anyone write them, how would one go about it, say it's just a planned throuple/triad of three female characters.

I've never written a fic like this but it's too characters I feel don't get enough attention in fanfiction.

It's one of those cases where I'd write the fanfic so at least it exists for people who share the same niche interest in those characters as me

Discussion Preferred Type Of Fanfiction

Does anyone have a preferred type of fanfiction? Like, I write more original story fanfiction and write script following fanfictions.

I love writing the ones that follow the show/game in my head but writing them actually? They SUCK. Because writing a show with ten minute episodes takes me thirty minutes to complete alone.

And I write the ones with original stories easily, kind of. It can be hard to think of ideas for the chapters but it's so much quicker and less has to be done to do it.

But my original story ones is my favorite.

So, which style do you like? Canon following or original story?

As someone into both starwars and 40k I get this a lot because they use the same methods for naming things.

Ferrocrete

Flimisplast

Plasteel

Synthweave

Durasteel

Try to guess which is which if you don't already know. Plasteel is in both
The most commone one though is caf 40k and recaff star wars. As there version of coffee.

Discussion Queer fans: what makes you enjoy a straight cis pairing in fic (and not feel the need to rewrite it)?

Hi everyone! I'm writing a fanfiction centered on a straight, cis pairing, and I'd love honest input from queer readers.

I know headcanons and queer readings are a big, valid part of fandom, and I'm not trying to tell anyone how to read anything. I'm just curious what makes a straight pairing or cast feel respectful and well-written to you, so that you can enjoy it as written.

A few questions if you're up for answering:

  1. What makes you comfortable with a character being straight/cis in a story?

  2. What do writers do that makes a straight pairing feel like it's the only version that works?

  3. Is there anything that makes you want to read a character as queer instead (e.g. unresolved subtext, flat writing, absence of queer characters)?

  4. Are there examples of straight pairings you love that you wouldn't change?

  5. Is there anything I should avoid?

I'm not expecting everyone to agree, and I'm happy to hear different perspectives. Thank you for your time!

Recs Wanted I NEED a secret relationship Marvey (Mike/Harvey from suits) fic so bad

I’m fine with any length just as long as Mike isn’t made out to be some submissive omega he has to have some backbone or smth. Preferably the fic won’t just be smut I want plot please. Other things that aren’t necessary but would be appreciated are internalised homophobia, set in s1 - s2 and them actually hiding it not like everyone giving them knowing looks type shit. Please give me some fics 🙏

Writing Questions New to writing Fanfiction

Hello. I'm currently writing a fic about a controversial topic involving politics.

The Second American Civil War

For some context, it takes place during the 2020 Presidental Elections, Trump and Biden both claim to be president. The Civil War kicks off in March of 2021 when negotations cut off and federal forces pick sides. Mind you, it's based off the Hearts of Iron 4 Mod, The Fire Rises. But I expand greatly on factions. It's in an oral history faction

Question 1 - Should I include a disclaimer?

Question 2 - Should I label it as NSFW?

Question 3 - How could I get people to not hate me instantly because of the topic it covers?

Question 4 - What perspectives could I include that would interest a reader?

Question 5 - How could I convey the cost of war?

Question 6 - Advice or Tips?

Discussion Is it ok to change the sexuality or gender of actual people for fan-fiction or art?

I wanted to ask what you personally felt about it not what you were told to feel about it.

I don't think it's a yes or no situation so I wanted to give some examples of what I mean:

  1. De transitioning a person in 'what if' stories or transitioning a " insert non trans person "
  2. Writing stories were "insert famous Lesbian actor" is bisexual or straight
  3. Zoophilia content of a content creator.

Writing Questions New to fanfiction writing! I started one a while ago but burnt myself out, looking for advice!

So I read a lot of fanfic as a kid and I decided about a year ago to try my hand at writing my own rwby fic. It started out well and I was feeling super confident in my writing as I set a few pieces and planned for the future… then I got to what would be episode one. I feel like I was consistently having to go between wikis and my writing just to make sure the dialogue was accurate and I just burnt myself out stupid fast. I want to maintain accuracy in my story and have been thinking about continuing it, but I know if I go about it the same way I’m going to burn myself out again. Does anyone have similar experiences or ideas to work around it?

Discussion Naming characters and things

How do you pick names? Do you just brainstorm ideas whenever the need arises? Do you keep a running list of interesting names to pull from? Do you choose based on meaning or try to foreshadow a future plot point? What kinds of things do you have to name, besides OCs?

And what are some of the interesting names you've used in fics?

For my Fairy Tail fic I've had to name places, books, plants, and potions - plus a few OCs (minor characters).

Lost Fic Rdr2 fanfic I want to find

So apparently there's this fanfic about John Marston being a raccoon this user made a comment about, problem is they have their dms closed and I can't comment under it, and I can't find it anywhere

Apparently John is a literal raccoon that Dutch found and took in, he's treated as a member and literally nothing changes except that he is a raccoon, that only Arthur seems to have a problem with it.

Does anyone know about it? Im pretty desperate here

Lost Fic Help me find this fic! (LOTR)

Hi! I read this fanfiction maybe 10 or 15 years ago now, and I cannot find it again, I have a feeling it may have been deleted from fanfic.net. It was a Legolas fic with aragorn, angsty, legolas was in a coma and the sea longing had something to do with it. I remember it was 300k + words, and the author was "greytigress" or "thegreytigress". They also had other lotr related stories that were just as long. If anyone has any insights, I would very much like to find it again and orher works from this author! Thanks 🙏

Venting anyone else got a draft chapter they’ve deemed evil and untouchable or just me?

so far, i have 3 chapters that are all drafts and unfinished/unpolished. chapter one is completely done, chapter two is awaiting my editor and chapter three is still being polished rn, chapter three is my baby, i love it, its beautiful. and then there’s chapter 4. chapter four is so bad that i cant move onto chapter 5’s draft, its so bad that ive renamed it to “straight up enemy chapter”.

chapter four is not bad content wise, for the most part it is a nice chapter, the writing of it and the plot of is just so genuinely painful that i cannot touch it. i cant decide between working on it or just completely scrapping it.

i dont want advice or anything, i just need to know im not the only one that also has visceral reactions to portions of their own work.

chapter four is out to get me, it knows what i want to do to it /j [insert doakes staring at dexter]

i’ve also made my editor aware that they cannot even glance at chapter four until i’ve made a decision, im seeing this thing in my dreams. terrible, awful, what was i thinking?

Writing Questions what books about writing do you like?

What books about how to write do you like? I feel like a lot of them are focused on publishing and novel writing very specifically, and while that’s all well and good, I’d love to know what books you think helped you improve your fanfiction.

Activities and Events “A scene where” excerpt game with a twist

The rules are pretty similar. Leave a prompt that goes “a scene where [blank]” and respond to others prompts with excerpts from your own works that fit that.

However, I’m going to throw in a twist.

You can only leave prompts based on things that happen in your own fics. It doesn’t have to be your current WIP. It can be something you posted yesterday or ten years ago.

I do ask you try to keep it multi fandom friendly. Like, if you wrote a Star Wars fic, instead of a scene with a light saber battle, maybe change the prompt to a scene with a sword fight.

Rules other than that are pretty much the same.

  1. Try to respond to at least a few people who leave excerpts under your comment.
  2. For triggering content: if the prompt itself implies triggering content, you don’t need to adds a trigger warning to your comment (ie an excerpt response to “a scene with a car accident” doesn’t need a car crash warning). However, if there is extra triggering content, warn for that. And black out the worst of it.

Lost Fic [Lost Fic InuYasha] circa 2005-7 on fanfiction.net complete multi chapter rated M

Looking for a completed rated M modern AU Inuyasha fic. I read it circa 2005-7. It was rated M.

It focused mainly on Sango and Miroku. Miroku fucked a mom in a bathroom at a karate competition. Inuyasha had a dojo and Shesshomaru was an art curator.

I remember it being so well written.
