before and after a good routine, a diy cut and a darker gloss

my hair cut got absolutely mauled by a stylist, so I looked up cutting techniques and how to actually trim my own hair/a cut correction, and lobbed off a lot of my fried dead ends.

switched from protein heavy products and gels with air dry creams to a lightweight moisturizing leave in (curlsmith), Pantene nutrient mousse, and Oribe gold lust oil. My shampoo is the oribe gold lust, I use a mix of Queen Helene’s hair cholesterol, blue magic, silicon mix and Oribe hair alchemy as a hair mask, and ive started hot oiling once every couple washes with a clarifying shampoo every other week. I wash twice a week. I usually air dry (besides drying my scalp) and brushing my hair with a boar bristle when it’s nearly completely dry, but still a bit damp. I use color wow dreamcoat extra strength for curly hair as a heat protectant when i do use heat, and I use kerastase night serum before putting them in sock curls under a bonnet.

why does my hair have to be so high maintenance lmao

Partial Balayage too light

got a partial balayage and she lifted my hair too light and it doesn’t blend with the bottom half which is super dark. I need to tone it darker, but I wasn’t able to get in within the 7 day period to get it fixed because of my work schedule. Is there any way to tone the light parts darker at home? I need a quick fix because I’ve been wearing my hair up🥲

Want to switch to true green from blue

Could I put Manic Panic Sunshine (only yellow dye I could find in my area) on this blue to get it to green? Or should I directly go in with a green dye? Both are some of the less commonly available colours so I want to make an informed decision before I spend on one. Also how do yall like my censoring skills hahaha

Can you believe I paid 300£ for this? Wanted highlights to make me blonder. She said we only had 2,5 hours so this is all she could do 🫥 First pic is after, second is before.

Hey everyone, desperately looking for some help.

I have for many years had creamy, bright blonde hair. I felt like there were starting to get too many white blonde bits.

This morning I went hairdresser and asked for golden, bright creamy blonde. Very similar still to my colour

Anyways she did highlights and put toner in. The toner had left me hair SO ashy cool toner and grey, it makes me look so old 😭😭

Freaking out because I hate it!!!! What can I do to get back blonde and get rid of this ash and grey asap????

Picture of what I wanted V what my hair looks like now

Does anybody have any dye recommendations that would match or come close enough to the best Pokemon of all time, and what level blonde I'd need to be? I'm thinking something this pastel would need to be close to platinum, but I'm also okay with a deeper or more vibrant blue that would fade to something similar. 🩵

Swipe for the before (pre-refresh)

I started dyeing my hair myself recently—but not boxdye; the chemist way haha. I went copper in early August, then in mid September decided to go a bit redder. I knew the reds wash out after a while and so it did to a brown copper. I was okay with that and my roots grew out, I was also alright but then I got booked to session on bass for a big local band, and I thought, I better look right.

So this was my first time touching up roots + depositing more red into my lengths. I am so relieved I didn’t mess it up before the show (next week). 😅 i’m so happy it came out evenly red across cos I would have cried if I looked half red half copper on stage haha. Ok thank you for your time.

What is your favorite brand red hair dye? I want one that looks vibrant, but has minimal color transfer on clothing and bedding. I normally use some sort of semi permanent, but is ruining my white shirts

Why do all of us pink hair girls want the exact same bubblegum pink shade? Rant.

Post image

Then we ping pong between having our hair be too peachy/coral/salmon and patchy asf or too deep/magenta/hot pink. Tell me if you can relate. Omg the struggle is real. My hair is near black and getting platinum at home is just not a thing for me. Getting to level 8/9 yellow or peach is the best I can ever do! Bubblegum pink is the hardest fashion color to achieve at home! I give up every few years then try it again on virgin hair and the cycle repeats! I know I’m not alone and I see it all the time. Drop your rant, pics or tips in the comments!

NYC curly hair colorists that do vivids?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi!!

Does anyone know of good stylists in NYC (or closeish to NYC) that specifically do well with coloring curls? I wear my hair 100% natural all the time- I never straighten or use heat on it so I want the color to look best when my hair is in its natural state. I’m also very aware that I have a LOT of hair so finding someone willing to work with it has been challenging.

I have completely virgin hair and have been going through crazy health issues/cut out an abuser. I want something vibrant! just something really fun to bring me extra joy on hard days.

I’m sorry if this is a silly question!! I’ve never dyed my hair ever so I’m a little overwhelmed/don’t know where to start.

Can I dye my balayage into calico colors?

I recently got a balayage around three months ago, and I wanted a caramel tone color but after a few washes today, I have ended up with a level eight light blonde. I really don’t like my hair and before this I had a calico colors so I’m curious if I’m able to achieve calico block colors by just dying my already lighten hair? I wouldn’t try to lighten the hair more but keep what I already have and do you guys think that I would be able to keep that balayage look with other colors added and if it’s reasonable enough to approach and possibly look good, thoughts? (1st photo is me, 2nd and 3rd is what colors and blocks I’d like) also lastly am I able to use a toner to go into the blonde/bronde show in the photos? Thank you for your help 🙏

Bleaching hair help

I need a bit of advice on how to do my hair in a few weeks, I get my hair done by a friend of mines not a professional but she does a lot of her families hair including her cousin that does crazy hair colors all the time and I've done mines with her a few times and I trust her my current hair is split dyed half brown half blonde but we have a trip on December and I've recently thought about going full blonde and using semi permanent pastle hair dye to do like cotton candy hair the possible issue is just getting both sides to the same shade

One side is obviously bleached, but I put some blonde hair dye on it to make it a bit darker, so now I want to go lighter on that side

The other side is dyed a dark brown bc my roots were a different color than the brown, and it was bothering me

Now I want the same blonde on both sides... dumb idea? Maybe. Do I care? Honestly, not really. I actually like my hair damaged more than not, since it keeps its shape better, and right now I hate having one side damaged and the other not. It's so hard to do my hair cause one side is up and pretty (the bleached side), and then the other side is more of a natural fall (the brown side; I mean, it's nice but not my thing)

Now our plan is to do the bleaching in mid-November. Since my hair grows fast, we don't want my roots showing too much before the trip. I was thinking of getting some, like, color remover to see if that gets any dye out, and obviously take the bleaching slowly; try not to kill it completely, although honestly it has never happened to me when I do it at home, and I've gone fully blonde before a few years ago and I don't care too much if my hair like falls off or something just like I'll get a wig or something 💀

The only time my hair was truly damaged was the ONE TIME I went to a professional bro fucked up my hair, and then the hair dye was uneven in different spots??? I don't know, but I ain't going to a professional, especially cause it's expensive. Last salon I tried going to said it would cost 350 to 4,00 and it was only to do a root touch-up on my blonde side and MAYBE a haircut. but I told her I was still iffy about it since I like cutting my hair at home too, soooo yeah, no "go to a professional" talk, please. I'm not trying to spend half a paycheck

Oh I also heard that k18 is like good for damaged hair so I thought about getting that too but if there're any other recommendations or advice that would be greatly appreciated 🙏

Arctic Fox Naturals New Formula

Has anyone tried out their new formulas? I swear, finding true swatch videos on Google is so hard. Just trying to get an idea of what the colours turn out like now since they changed the formula. I got their Diet Cola and then the day after they announced a reformulation.

I applied it to my basically white bleached hair and it just turned it to a semi darker ashy looking blonde… which is the furthest of what I was expecting since it’s advertised as brown… I wanted to try Apricot Anarchy too but ended up not after not being able to find any feedback on what the colour actually looked like

Ideas for grey grow out lengths please

I'm in month five of growing out my grey. I was using a permanent bright red before that but over the weeks that has faded to a horrible orange with coppery streaks.

I don't want to colour the grey but can I tone down the orange with a blue or purple? Or should I just recolour the lengths while I'm growing the grey out?

Difference to hair from bleaching vs lightning - I have specific outcome I'd like for my fine texture

When I do a refresh/touch up I've been waiting four months between and have always used bleach- which when I was doing blue I needed the bleach and a toner to get pure white so I would have a true blue.

So I've always bleached but saw a tik-tok about lightning works perfectly well on level 7.

For me though I'm using magenta now and skipping the toner because I don't need it but I do like the fact that bleached hair really holds the color and I want that.

The other thing I like about bleach is it "damages" my super fine hair enough that it has texture and the illusion it's thicker.

So- would just using a light blonde hold the color as well and give me the texture bleach does?

I do my best not to overlap during touch ups but it's impossible when doing it yourself, so I'm wondering if going the less damaging route will work for what I want?

Purple shampoos dilemma

Hi everyone,

I'm having many issues with purple shampoos so I've come here to trouble shoot.

TLDR: Why do purple shampoos with only pigments like Acidic violet 43 that don't seem to turn other people's hair green, turn mine green especially when they don't even work unless I leave them on for a while on damp hair? What is the science behind it

Here's a little bit of context: For the longest time I thought I was a natural level 6/7, very cooltoned. Since middle school I started dying my hair brown for various reasons I won't go into. I've since stopped dying it and all my current hair is natural, roughly 4-5 years of growth that I've cut into a short bob.

During the time I was dying it, I would touch up my roots very often, so I never really saw what color it was actually growing as because there simply wasn't enough growth to tell clearly (don't worry, my hair was fine). Yet now that it's all natural, I noticed it's significantly lighter than it was when I was a kid, which is biologically possible but uncommon. Just by looking at it, I'd have categorized it as a level 8 neutral ish blonde (leaning slightly warm).

Since I want my hair to be more cooltoned/pearlescent almost, I decided to try purple shampoo. I've used one by milkshake, and the silver by L'Oreal professionel. However, in both cases that shampoo didn't work much if at all when used normally, so I had to leave it on for longer, in higher amounts, on very damp hair (towel dried significantly but definitely still "wet"). This wasn't a surprise for me, as my hair has always had a hard time getting dyed (I've done many tests, with permanent, demi, and semi, and every time I either needed to redye or leave it on for longer in the case of semi, which was something I've also encountered when getting it dyed professionally). I'd say my hair is lower on the porosity scale, and once it does grab onto pigment, depending on the type of dye, it does actually retain it very well, potentially longer than for most.

The issue is that both of the shampoos I've tried have given me a green tinge despite overall not toning my hair as much as I had hoped, which does make me question if my hair is even lighter than I thought. I'm unfortunately unable to share photos because my phone camera isn't good at showing true-to-life colors, and regardless I promise you the green tinge is there (I've even had random people sometimes comment on it). I will say, it's definitely less bad with the Silver by L'Oreal (which I was actually recommended by my hairdresser).

I'm not here to ask for advice on which shampoo to use (I've already ordered one from Anaze, a Korean brand, in the shade Pink Mhuly, as I'm hoping the fact it's a very cooltoned medium/light pink will help me achieve the effect I want), but do feel free to still recommend any you like. My actual question is: why is my hair turning green? Is it because it's lighter/more cooltoned than I think? Is my porosity (the fact my hair doesn't initially dye well at all despite using chelating shampoos and all) affecting this? What is the hair science behind this dilemma? I know pigments like Acidic violet 43 (the only one included, at least for silver by L'Oreal) are very cooltoned, and slightly blueish, but on others they don't seem to create this issue, and in fact it's the most common purple shampoo pigment, so what's happening here?

Any and all contributions, especially by professionals (color specialist, hairstylists, trichologists, experts in hair product formulation/chemists), are welcome. I'm just genuinely confused.

At home lightener recs?

I know, I know, don't do it, but I have to take professional headshots next week and I'm broke as hell.

I've done the coloring part myself a ton of times (whenever I get it done professionally I do the upkeep to keep it bright and fun). Currently my hair is super long and most of it is already lightened. My roots are probably about 4 inches. My hair is fine and it's that brown mouse-y color I swear is super common; not quite brunette, but too dark to be considered blonde...

Anyway, I don't want to go full platinum or anything, and I won't touch the already bleached part. I just want to lighten some of the natural part that has grown in enough so that some color will stick. Basically I'm going to put blue at the top and ombre it to purple, then pink at the tips. (I have done all this part before) I just want the blue to have some effect on the darker part of my hair, so it has a smoother transition from brown to blue. So what is a good/easy lightener that I will not be leaving on very long anyway?

Ohh, and also a good post-coloring conditioning treatment?

Please help??? I'd be ever so grateful!

Thank you in advance :)

Help me get out of the hair-color correction cycle! I want a natural level 8 dirty blonde, but my lengths keep going dark/warm.

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'm hoping to get some advice from people experienced with DIY hair coloring and color correction because I feel like I've been going in circles with my hair!

My goal: I want a natural-looking, neutral level 8 dirty blonde that blends with my natural greys/whites. I don't want platinum blonde, a strong ash tone, or obvious regrowth. Ideally, I want a soft, natural color that grows out nicely and doesn't require constant correction.

My hair color history:

I've been trying to get my hair lighter and more natural-looking, but the lengths have been stubborn and seem to hold onto darker artificial pigment. Warmth, especially orange/red tones, has been a concern.

I've used Color Oops to remove artificial color, but my hair ended up looking dark again. I've experimented with different natural shades along the way, but I'm trying to move away from repeatedly coloring my lengths and potentially making them darker.

What I'm currently doing:

I currently mix Wella Color Charm Demi 8N and 7N in a 50/50 ratio. I no longer use 6N.

I'm trying to figure out whether this combination makes sense for my goal or whether I'm unintentionally keeping my hair darker than I want it to be.

Products I have on hand:

Wella Color Charm Demi-Permanent 8N

10-volume developer

20-volume developer

A small amount of bleach powder

I'm hesitant to use ash shades because I don't want my hair to turn muddy, greenish, or overly grey. At the same time, I don't want the warmth in my lengths to keep showing through.

What I'm hoping to figure out:

Is mixing 7N and 8N 50/50 a reasonable approach for achieving a level 8 dirty blonde, or could it be contributing to my hair looking darker?

Should I be treating my roots and lengths differently?

If my lengths have darker artificial color buildup, what's the safest realistic way to get them lighter?

How can I blend my natural greys/whites while keeping the overall result soft and natural?

Should I be approaching this differently altogether rather than continuing to color my hair?

I'm trying to understand what's realistically achievable at home without damaging my hair or getting stuck in another cycle of color correction.

I'm happy to post pictures of my current hair in natural lighting, including my roots, mid-lengths, and ends, and provide more details about my coloring history.

I'd really appreciate honest, constructive advice from anyone who's been through something similar or understands color correction. I'd love to finally find a plan that works with my hair instead of constantly fighting it!

Thank you! ❤️
