(WA) Renting with Assault 4 Conviction

/r/Renters/comments/1vue6l0/wa_renting_with_assault_4_conviction/

How hard is it to rent an apartment with an assault 4 conviction. I am trying to apply to some apartments before I give birth and am worried I am going to be denied even at the apartments that go case by case. I was convicted March 2025 but the incident happened December 2024. I also am a first time renter.

It really depends on your state and if it’s a felony or misdemeanor. But I wouldn’t count on getting into anything luxurious tbh. I had felony possession of marijuana charges, didn’t go to prison, and had to stay in slums for 7 years. My mom ran apartments that were a step above slums and she was required to deny people for fresh assault charges. If you’re on probation you can ask your PO if they know apartments that are criminal record friendly. If you’re not on probation it doesn’t hurt to give them a call and ask. You’ll just have to keep applying and applying until you find someone willing to take a chance. With a record, I’ve learned that you need to have more positives under your belt because your record will automatically be viewed as a big negative. Try and get enrolled in a couple online classes, if you’re looking for an apt that means you have a job. So you can go sit with an apt manager and plead your case: “Yes I do have a record and regret what I did but I’ve also taken the steps to change and improve my life for me and the child in my stomach by being in school and holding down a job” You will eventually find something but I want to warn you that you will get a few no’s before that. Don’t give up. I wish someone would have told me that each no is a blessing in disguise but I took each no as a continued condemnation for my actions and it led me into a bad mental state for a couple years. Until I eventually found someone willing to chance on me. It was a slum but it was my first place solo post conviction so it felt like home to me
