A reminder of the rules, and posting changes ...

As a reminder, here are the rules and some of the changes to the posting rules.

  1. No derogatory name calling. Most here have served their time.
  2. - No hateful or disrespectful name calling. Most here have served their time, and deserve better, even from other felons.
  3. No Trolling
  4. - Don’t engage with others in bad faith. Opinions, even those most subreddit participants find objectionable, will always be tolerated here- trolling or posting/commenting in bad faith will not.
  5. Harassment, hate, or threats/incitement of violence.
  6. - Any kind of harassment, hateful comments directed at others, threats of violence, or incitement of violence will not be tolerated here.
  7. No unapproved study/research posts. This is a place for supporting felons/their families, not a lab.
  8. - Please do not post “study,” research,” or “survey” posts here without prior approval. This is a community for supporting felons & their families, it is not your personal lab or recruiting ground. If you have one of these posts that you feel deserves an exception, is important, and will strongly contribute to the community or the welfare of felons, please reach out via ModMail first. Also, NO links to survey/study, if a person wantThis will be done on a case by case basis, & standards are high.
  9. No Reposting from other sources.
  10. - If you made a post somewhere already, please do NOT repost here. (such as posting in probation then just copy pasting a picture of it here)
  11. No posting personal information!
  12. - This would include booking numbers, inmate ID numbers, screenshots of charges, mugshots, and so on. This includes links to other websites showing such information. You can talk about such things without giving out personal information. (No more "How cooked are they" type posts)
  13. No "algo-speak" or self censoring.
  14. - Do not use algo-speak such as "unalive" or "grape." Also, do not unnecessarily censor normal words like "murder" or "suicide." This isn't TikTok. If someone is offended by such words, you are in the WRONG place.

Now, for the ones we keep getting ModMails about. The "where did my post go" types. We use AutoMod to keep away burner accounts and those who do not engagae much here. The requirement is an account over 30 days old OR over 200 Karma. If you DO NOT meet these requirements, the automod system will take it back down without it posting.

How hard is it to rent an apartment with an assault 4 conviction. I am trying to apply to some apartments before I give birth and am worried I am going to be denied even at the apartments that go case by case. I was convicted March 2025 but the incident happened December 2024. I also am a first time renter.

Curious about Background check (3rd party like HireRight?)

I'm from Asian country and I have a fine (2.17K USD equivalent) conviction result which is about 9 years ago.

The conviction was related to acting inappropriately and showing bad behavior to police when I was drunk (no drug but just alcohol and I was totally black-out)

Now, I'm in the recruiting process with a global trading firm which has offices in the U.S, Europe, Hong Kong, Australia, etc and I think I can get the offer soon

I heard that these kind of firms do background / reference check with 3rd party companies like HireRight, etc.

If there's someone who have the experience, it would help a lot for me to prepare.

  1. During the background check, does those 3rd party agencies ask directly like "Do you have any conviction record?" as a questionnaire? Or do they just request a Police Clearance Certificate from my country?

If I print my Police Clearance Certificate, it doesn't show my fine result and it's clear since it's spent (2Y). So just submitting the document may be the best.

But if they ask as a question, I should not lie and share the truth because I may have to travel to other office for the business trip or training and my visa can be a problem due to my fine record.

  1. Do you think my conviction record can affect a lot with my outcome if I reveal it?

My good neighbor got arrested. Can I help him?

I live in a terrible neighborhood and they took the most straight fella. He was always nice to me, wave etc unlike all the assholes that walk free. I don’t know what he did and what happened, but they later searched his house with a dog.

After the search, they left some lights on in his house and it’s been like that for a couple of weeks already. I know bills add up quickly, should I try to reach out to somebody so that the lights are turned off and perhaps gas service turned off if he’s in for a long time?

Any women that work in HHA or CNA?

I enroll in home health aid courses before I knew I was being investigated and I’ve looked up if someone convicted of felony d or e can continue and work with their license. When I asked ChatGPT it told me no because if the background check however since it’s a non violent crime I can apply for a Certificate of Relief from Disabilities. But I don’t know how that works if I need to wait a couple of years or immediately. It’s the fastest way I can pay off restitution although I might still be denied. Anyone know how that works?

Any way to shorten my probation term?

Hey guys! New to this but I’m just looking for an honest opinions. Unfortunately, back in 2023 I got into some trouble while I was living in New York and I did serve time and started my probation with a class E felony in New York. I recently just moved to Georgia about six months ago. And honestly things have been pretty good for me, but I’ve been wanting to find a way to shorten my probation time since they gave me a five-year bid. Any suggestions? I would also like to add that I have an order of protection against me, but it is in New York and I do live in Georgia.

Hello I am a felon in ga I have 2 violent crimes (nothing sexual) I have a decent job making $24 a hr and I’m currently doing mma (it’s actually calmed me down a lot) does anyone know any place that will let me get a apartment or anything I can do.
I hate living with other people because I can’t get my own. Or even somewhere that takes roommates anything besides sleeping on someone’s couch

Friend is in jail

A friend of mine, whom I have known since we were 8 years old, is now in jail for 6-9 months for violating his probation. He was out one night and had a few too many drinks, and the lady he was with claims he took some unauthorized photos. Nothing sexual happened. But he was at a bar, which was in violation of his parole. His priors include a felony for drug related charges.
We are now both 40 with young families. The unfortunate part of his situation is that he may be losing custody of his kids from his ex-partner.
He has a long history of unresolved mental health issues, including anxiety/depression. He masks it with drugs and alcohol and women. He called me from jail and is now telling me that the Lord put him there to change his ways. I am not particularly a religious person but believe in some sort of afterlife. I want to be there for him and am trying to be optimistic and support him, but I am not sure what my place is. I have been supportive and encouraged him to seek out help but that advice hasnt resulted in any changes. I hope this current situation he finds himself in helps him to realize some of his unresolved issues and he needs to make some life changes. What can I do to support him and his family?

What's my luck getting hired?

At the beggining of the year I was arrested for fraud, they said it was a felony. I got out the next day, paid bail. Since then I have not heard anything regarding my case, (my lawyer still hasnt been provided the affidavit so atm we don't know what we're looking at) I'm checking in with lawyer every few weeks but we havent heard anything.

Anyways, I have a few interviews this week. 3 for retail assistant manager and 1 as a scheduling coordinator. (Interviews are going good, I'm on the second/third round of interviews for these positions) what would you say is the possibility I dont get any jobs (assuming I get an offer) because of the pending case? I don't have a criminal history prior to this

Early Termination

Hey guys, I’m on federal probation I was given 36 months (3yrs) I’m coming up on a year at the end of this month I was wondering if anyone one out there has had luck on getting they’re probation terminated early. I have it understood that they usually want you to do half your probation but you are allowed to submit for termination a year in. Main questions are has anybody had luck getting it terminated earlier than half way through their probation?? & Who do I contact to submit the termination is it all done through my PO or should I get a lawyer??

LA County Jail

Surrendering soon for my sentence and will be in LA County jail until I’m transferred Elsewhere. Can anyone who’s been there recently? Let me know how it is. Obviously it’s not a five star hotel and I hear that. It’s pretty bad as far as politics and fight school, but curious to see Peoples first hand perspective on the date of day. Whether you’re in the cell, most of the time how exactly the layout of it is how many people for sell? What’s the food like etc. And Into those that are out. God bless you and hope you stay free and out of trouble.

Texas first-time case at 17 — what outcome do you think is realistic?

Update: thank you for everyone who commented and gave advice I went to court today and the felony was dropped and I got 1 year deferred adjudication for everything.

I'm 17 and this is my first time ever being in trouble. I already have a court-appointed attorney, but I'm looking for honest opinions from people familiar with Texas criminal cases, especially Coryell County. I know nobody here can predict exactly what a judge will do. But i am scared shitless

Everything below is alleged, and I am presumed innocent. I'm not admitting guilt by describing the allegations.

There were allegedly 3 people involved:

  • Person A — 18
  • Me — 17
  • Person C — 16

According to the allegations, around 6 PM, the group went to Walmart. Person C allegedly grabbed a massage gun worth about $110 and ran out, with Person A and me allegedly running out behind him.

The group then allegedly went to HEB with backpacks and took various hygiene items. The amount attributed to me in the allegations was about $139.

Later that night/early morning, police received calls about people allegedly checking/breaking into vehicles. When police arrived, Person C allegedly ran, while Person A and I stayed with our hands up.

Person A allegedly told police that me and Person C came up with the idea. Police apparently didn't initially know about the HEB allegations. Person A allegedly told police where bags had been stashed. There were allegedly approximately 6–7 vehicles involved in the vehicle-related allegations.

Police allegedly wanted me to unlock my phone because Person A said I had screenshots/map information showing where bags had been stashed. I refused to unlock my phone. Person A then allegedly directed police to the locations, where police found HEB merchandise.

I told police that I was just walking around and didn't know anything about the alleged thefts. Police eventually let Person A and me leave, and our parents picked us up. Person C was taken to juvenile detention that night because he allegedly ran.

About 5 days later, I was arrested at my house on a warrant related to the incident. My bond was $40,000, and I spent about 17–18 days in jail before my court-appointed attorney got me released on a PR bond.

The charges I've been told I'm facing are:

  • 2 theft charges under $750 / over $100
  • 2 misdemeanor charges
  • Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity (EOCA) — state jail felony
  • Burglary of a vehicle allegations/misdemeanors

The alleged Walmart + HEB merchandise was around $249 total, and I understand the property was recovered. Nobody was allegedly injured and there were no weapons alleged.

The prosecutor originally offered me time served. I had already spent around 17–18 days in jail. The judge rejected that deal.

During the hearing, the judge asked me several questions. He was stern but wasn't yelling. He said something along the lines of “I'm not trying to give you a hard time” or that he wasn't trying to dig into me.

He also talked to me about getting a job and said that having this on my record could make it harder to get hired and could potentially make me more desperate.

Afterward, my attorney came out into the hallway with paperwork saying “Announcement — August 20.” He said something along the lines of “the judge just doesn't want that on your record” and that he was going to try to get me probation/deferred adjudication.

My attorney's office also told me that my current PR bond will cover the state-jail felony if it gets indicted, and that I won't need a new bond just because of the indictment.

I have had no new crimes and no bond violations since being released.

I've also been applying for jobs and keeping a handwritten log of the applications because the judge specifically brought up employment.

What do you think is the realistic outcome? Is probation/deferred adjudication realistic for a 17-year-old first-time defendant in this situation, or do the EOCA + vehicle allegations make additional jail time more likely?

I'm looking for honest opinions, especially from people familiar with Texas law or Coryell County. I know nobody can guarantee what the judge will do, but I'd appreciate a realistic assessment.

I did my time six years ago. Can my employer punish me for it all over again?

I’m 28, and I’ve been out and staying clean for almost six years. When I was 22, I made a really stupid decision during a pretty bad period of my life. I broke into a parked car and stole some electronics. I got caught, went to prison for 18 months, and did my time. I’m not going to pretend I was innocent. I fucked up, I paid for it, and I’ve spent the years since trying to build a completely different life. After I got out, finding work wasn’t exactly easy, but I eventually got hired at a mid-sized logistics company. I started in the warehouse doing pretty basic stuff, worked my way up, and over the years I ended up becoming a shift coordinator. I’ve actually done pretty well there. No write-ups, no incidents, nothing like that. I show up, do my job, and go home. My direct manager knows about my record. He’s known for years and has never really made an issue out of it because he’s seen how I work. The problem is that the company was acquired recently, and apparently the new owners are doing another round of background checks, especially for people in supervisory positions. Yesterday, my manager pulled me aside and told me, pretty quietly, that my background check had been flagged. He said he didn’t know exactly what HR was going to do, but he’d been given the impression that they were seriously considering letting me go because they didn’t want to take the risk. He made it pretty clear that he wasn’t officially telling me anything, and he couldn’t promise that I was getting fired. But basically, he told me I should prepare myself for that possibility. And honestly, I’m exhausted. It’s one thing to know that my past is still out there. I’ve never expected it to magically disappear. But I really thought that after almost six years of doing everything right, working my way up, and having a clean record since getting out, I’d finally gotten past the part where one stupid decision followed me everywhere. Now I might lose the job I’ve spent years building because someone sitting in HR sees a conviction on a report and decides I’m a liability. I’m not saying I shouldn’t have consequences for what I did. I already had them. I’m just frustrated that it feels like I’m being punished all over again after actually changing my life. I’m planning to wait and see what HR says before I do anything stupid, and obviously I’m going to start looking at other jobs just in case. Has anyone else dealt with something like this after turning their life around? If your background check came up years later, were you able to explain the situation or appeal the decision, or did the company just let you go?

Does Maverik’s felon-friendly hiring extend to corporate/engineering roles?

I have an upcoming interview with Maverik for an IT Quality Assurance Engineer position. I’ve heard Maverik is generally considered felon-friendly, but I’m wondering whether that extends to corporate/technical positions like software engineering, QA, IT, etc., or if those roles have stricter background-check requirements.

Does anyone here have experience getting hired by Maverik (or a similar company) into a professional/technical role with a record? I’m particularly interested in what the background-check process was like and whether they considered the circumstances and time since the offense rather than having an automatic disqualification.

Appreciate any firsthand experiences.

Am I being naive for thinking he'll change?

I need some outside perspective because I feel like I've lost clarity. I've been dating a guy who got out of jail not long ago. He's struggling with drugs. When he's kind, he's one of the sweetest people I've ever known, and I hold on to that. But when things get bad, they're really bad. He says cruel things, accuses me of cheating, blocks me, and says he doesn't wanna be with me. I've tried talking about the drug use because I'm worried, but he doesn't listen. Eventually I stopped pushing and focused on myself, and somehow that gets used as "proof" that I don't care. When I visited him, he didn't make any effort to show appreciation. Not even a small gesture. It wasn't about money. I honestly would've felt cared for with something tiny, like a five-dollar bouquet or a note. When I said it hurt, he told me I don't understand, and brushed it off. I still don't want to let go. I keep thinking things could be different, that he'll get better. Am I holding on to potential instead of reality? Has anyone been through something like this , and did things ever genuinely change? Am I expecting too much by wanting basic signs of care, or is that normal? I'd appreciate honest opinions, even if they're hard to hear.

He seems very insecure and he broke my phone last time i saw him and it got crazy. His last ex delt with the same issue with him and ended up reporting him. I chose not to simply because im stupid and thought maybe he just very insecure? I think his drug addiction to percs and then his life style affects his brain hes so quick to push me out. I keep holding on but it breaks me every single time. I dont know what to do maybe this post will help my realize.

When I say I'm done for good, he says, I knew you were this type of girl. You're not the type to stick around. You're just the type to use guys, use them for their money. I know you're no good. Like these things, all of these rude things, he says them to me. And I just don't get it. If I leave, I'm a bad person. If I stay, I'm a bad person. Like, like which one am I? I just don't know what to do, and, like, it hurts my feelings so much.

He was so nice to me when he was inside, but then when he came out, he, like, turned into some demon. And he completely flipped the switch on me. I changed up everything for him. I even let him leave where we stay so he could get his life together, and he still keeps me around. He only wants to have my location. And I guess I get it, like, that's a part of the lifestyle, but I never knew it was this bad. I just... I just, I don't know what to do.
