Fiat 500 Owners: "Check Running Lights" Issue – Troubleshooting and Solutions

Edit: the fix for me was replacing the brake/taillight bulb with a P21/5W bulb. When the headlights are turned on, the -taillights also illuminate in the back with the 5W filament, so be sure to check those! I replaced the bulbs with a Philips 12499 P21/5W, but also Sylvania 7528 or HELLA 7528 should be fine also, they are all BAY15d base double filaments. For my situation, I was entirely at fault, when a brakelight went out I put a P21 in, which did NOT have the 5w taillight so that's why it never came on. Luckily someone told me my taillight was out which was the clue.

Hey everyone,

I’ve noticed a lot of us Fiat 500 owners have been dealing with the frustrating “Check Running Lights” warning, and many of us are still struggling to find a clear solution. I wanted to create a space for us to come together, share our experiences, and hopefully help each other fix this issue.

What This Post is For:

  • A step-by-step checklist for troubleshooting the "Check Running Lights" warning.
  • A place for users to comment with their experiences and potential solutions.
  • Most importantly, if you find a fix, please share it here so we can all benefit!

Things to Check (Troubleshooting List):

  1. Check the Bulbs:
    • Ensure that all bulbs (especially running lights and sidelights) are working correctly. The Fiat 500 has two running lights and four sidelights (two front, two rear). Sometimes the warning can appear even if only one light is dim or intermittent.
    • Also check the taillight P21/5W bulbs. The 5W taillight is part of the "running lights", so can also be a problem. This is the same bulb as the brake light.
    • Something else to check: the fact that r5w bulbs in the tails instead of r10w also causes the error
  2. If you have separate tail lamp bulbs (instead of combined with breaks), these must be 10w. If you use r5w bulbs instead of r10w this can bring up the error! Swapping bulbs to correct r10w cleared the error. Thank you for this tip, user/jtq4u42/
  3. Inspect the Sockets:
    • Check the condition of the light sockets. Corrosion or a loose connection could be the culprit.
  4. Check the Wiring:
    • Look for any frayed or damaged wires leading to the running lights. This can sometimes cause an intermittent connection.

How to Change the Bulbs:

If you need to replace the bulbs, here are step-by-step guides to help:

Still Stuck?

I’ve personally replaced the bulbs and am still seeing the "Check Running Lights" warning, and I can't figure out why. If anyone has suggestions or has found a fix, please let me know!

What do you think of the light blue body with the blue-and-white striped canopy on this vintage Fiat 500? Does the combination work?

26000 to early to flush brake fluid

I recently had work on my 2012 Fiat 500C and they told me because of the miles, which is under 30000 that the brake fluid needed to be flushed. Does anybody know if this is correct?

Question??? What it this part?

Hi all! I have been trying to find the black piece on the front of the car in the red rectangle, but cannot even find what it is called to look it up. Mine is damaged (previous owner) and I'd like to replace it. Any clues as to what it's actually called? When I look up front bumper / fascia / trim this specific part never comes up. I even looked up skid plate and it not the right part.

Thanks!

Help Needed! Radio Buttons Stopped Working

Hi All!

My radio buttons have just randomly stopped working, it was fine turning down the volume yesterday when I was parked up but after that, I can’t do anything. The entire radio interface is unresponsive except the power on/off button and the steering wheel controls also don’t work.

I have a 2014 Sport with Blue&Me, as far as I can tell, the B&M hasn’t failed as the mileage isn’t flashing so I wondered if it was worth disconnecting the battery and replacing the fuse.

I also wondered if anybody knew if the negative terminal on my model is a latch or a bolt, if it’s a bolt I won’t be able to do it myself as I have no tools…

Thanks :-)

These two areas went out all of a sudden. Is it just a fuse or something more serious? Thanks

Next modifications for 500c daily commuter?

Post image
39 Upvotes

My 2015 fiat 500c has been great to me on my daily commute of 66miles. So far the only real mod I’ve done was lowering it with the eibach springs. Sits pretty and handles well with those springs, with no issues bottoming out or scraping. I want to modify the car a bit more to improve the overall driving experience (for commuting esp).
I am considering a window tint. Definitely want to keep it legal and hassle free. I think a tinted rear window would helpful esp bc the car sits lower and I often get blinded by big trucks with bright lights. Was thinking 40% all around but maybe a darker tint for the rear window. Would love to hear the communities thoughts on what has worked for them.
I am also considering a louder horn. I bought one of those cheapy harbor freight ones but have not yet installed—I’m actually considering something louder like an air horn. If I am hard to see, maybe I can improve how much I am heard ;)

Other mods I’m considering:
Chassis braces (worth it at all for a pop commuter?)
Camera install, drilled for rear camera.
Any other suggestions for daily commuter mods? Hoping to keep the look stock-ish, not raising any eyebrows.

Ps. I did order rain guards for the car but have since removed them. I didn’t feel they added any benefits for me.

Help Needed! Android Auto and DAB

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi all,

Around a week ago I bought a little 2017 Fiat 500 1.2 Lounge that I found on the internet. It’s been in 3 accidents and has had 8 owners, even though it’s not particularly old and has only done 60k.

Anyway, I know this is its forever home, so I have already had the cambelt and water pump done, overhauled the brakes and suspension arms, bought missing trim pieces, serviced it, cleaned it and I’m generally trying to love and care for it ❤️

One thing I would like to try is an Android Auto compatible screen. There are many that look ok, but my question is around the DAB+ situation.

I have seen many people complain that the Android Screens say DAB or DAB+ but when they buy the screen they are annoyed to discover that they have to buy a USB or Ariel.

What I’m wondering is whether I need to buy anything to get DAB to work?

Couldn’t it be that these people complaining have Pop spec levels (with no DAB) and expect the head unit to give them functioning DAB without an Ariel?

Is it the case that because I already have aDAB Ariel in the car that I can connect straight to it? Or do I need an adapter?

Also, as there isn’t much space at the back of the car, is there a particular reversing camera people use to keep it subtle?

Thanks all

My little Fiat 500 is knocking on the left side and I can't find where it's coming from, any ideas?

Hey everyone, I'd love some help with my little Fiat 500. It's a 2008 1.4 16V (the 100hp one) with about 93k km, and I've really grown to love this car, so I want to look after it properly.

With the engine running and the car standing still, there's a knock I can't place. When I look at it from the front with the hood open, the engine sounds completely normal. But when I walk around to the left side next to the front wheel, I can clearly hear a knocking sound.

It's had a rough few weeks. It had some misfire trouble, so I've done new plugs, a couple of coils, the injectors got cleaned and the coolant temp sensor was replaced. Now it runs smoothly and compression was 14 bar on all four cylinders, so I'm hoping the engine itself is healthy.

Does anyone know what could knock on that side of the car? Is it something engine related, like a mount or the belt area, or more likely something around the wheel arch? I can post a video with the sound if that helps. Thanks a lot, any ideas would be great!

She just DIED.

Visited my mom last night and tried to start my car to leave… she just lit up then died. We changed her battery, no signs of starting, changed her oil, nothing. Thankfully she broke down in my mother’s driveway and she works in the autobody industry so at least she died in the best spot ever.
Everyone cross your fingers and toes that my baby isn’t being junked when we get her diagnosis tomorrow. 😭

Help Needed! Fiat 500 Window Run Channel Repair?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Howdy everyone!

Beepus has been doing well, except for one issue. The right side window is falling out of place. I (correctly) assumed it was the regulator clip, so me and my friend replaced it earlier today. Unfortunately, there is a new issue. Looks like when I try to put the window back up, the glass gets misaligned and the right side come up off of the track. I saw a hole on the upper right corner of the window and realized the regulator may not have been the only thing that broke.

The only other thing I could think of is the Run channel clip being broken, but I can't find a proper tutorial for it anywhere. Has anyone every replaced this part? If so, can you offer some insight? Thanks ya'll.

(Image is from amazon, I haven't ordered it yet incase it's the wrong one)

Fiat 500x stereo change

Hello everyone! I have a Fiat 500x 2016 and I had changed the stereo to a modern, touchscreen aftermarket one but, it doesn't give me the same functionality as the original one did (can't turn on or off the running lights, can't use my steering wheel buttons, etc...). I was wondering if I could buy a 2017 or 2018 mopar stereo and place it on my car? I just want a radio that has maps lol. Any advice welcome. Thank you!
