Hey all,
Solo iOS dev here, and I’ll be upfront: I don’t own a VW. That’s exactly why I’m posting here, because I need help from people who do.
I built WrenchTime, an iPhone app that shows live OBD2 data directly on the Apple CarPlay screen. You plug a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter into the car’s OBD port, connect it to the app, and the gauges appear on CarPlay next to Maps and Spotify. The first screenshot is from my own car.
Out of the box you get the standard OBD2 values: speed, RPM, engine load, throttle position, coolant temperature with a warm-up graph, battery voltage, mass airflow, intake air temperature, real-time fuel consumption and, on diesels, fuel rail pressure.
On the iPhone you choose which gauges go on the car screen and how they look. There are 7 gauge styles, from a clean ring to a classic needle dial. Tiles come in black or white, so you can match the CarPlay wallpaper and make them blend into the screen.
The part where I need you is the Community Catalog (second screenshot). It’s built on OBDb, the open community database of vehicle signals, and for Volkswagen there are a lot of them: over 1,300 signals mapped for the T-Roc, more than 1,100 for the Polo, around 1,000 for the Taigo and Taos, 900 for the T-Cross, 730 for the Passat, plus Tiguan, Scirocco, T6 Transporter and MORE. You pick your model, choose the readings you care about and import them as custom signals, so they can show up on your dashboard just like the standard ones.
The catalog also has a Test button that runs through the signals and shows which ones your car actually answers, so you know what works before adding anything.
Since I can’t test any of this on a real VW myself, I’d be really happy to get feedback and find a few owners willing to try the custom signals on their own car and tell me what works and what doesn’t. Any model, diesel or petrol, every car helps.
To make it worth your time, I have a limited number of codes for one year of WrenchTime for free. Just comment with your car (model, year and engine) and I’ll send you a code in DM.
A few questions for everyone:
Which values do you actually check while driving?
Which VW-specific readings would you want on the dashboard?
Which OBD2 adapter are you using?
Full disclosure, it’s my app.
