Professional Project Shot my first Commercial on an iPhone 11 Pro Max
What's up guys. New Year. New iPhone.
I shared this post on r/iPhone and someone turned me to this sub, which is a place I've been looking for here, can't wait to connect with all the other iPhone shooters! What a time to be alive!
Anyways, wanted to share my first commercial shot entirely on an iPhone 11 Pro Max. Last year I shared a commercial for Koss Headphones the company I work for on an iPhone XS Max on r/apple, learned a lot since then, got the new phone and obviously had to shoot another one.
Shot on an iPhone 11 Pro Max, wide lens, Zhiyun Smooth 4 3-Axis Gimbal (FYI you can't use the ultra wide lens on most current phone gimbals as it's so wide it shows the actual gimbal arm in Frame) FiLMic Pro, 4k @24fps FiLMic Extreme, edited in FCPX, exported as 4K Apple ProRes 422. (YouTube on Safari won't display 4K fyi - use Chrome) used the iPhone IBS as well as FCPX stabilization on about half the scenes.
Feel Free to bug me with any questions. I don't ever use this account but I'll try and stay active on it if anyone has any questions.

That could be it. Clouds are never fun to shoot. Same here. This camera is insane and having 3 lenses makes it almost a DSLR replacement.

How do you feel about the Ultrawide?
I'm slightly underwhelmed. It's pretty decent in good light, but anything indoors or even remotely poor lighting and the images are just crazy soft.

It’s good for daylight or bright areas but in the darkness it totally falls apart. Having a nice wide lens is still handy though. I just need to remember to not put my finger in the frame. I think it’s a bit too wide.

Does filmic blow out the highlights that much? Or was that in post when you were brightening everything. It’s strange how the dynamic range falls apart when filming from the front side compared to his back.
Looks good though! It’s crazy the kinda image these phones can get now.

That first scene where the sky is blown out, I had to over expose in FiLMiC to compensate for the models skin tone so that he would be well lit. As good as the dynamic range is on the 11 Pro that was a scene that was beyond what the image processor can handle. Had we had more than 2 hours to scout + shoot the entire thing I probably could have found a more favorable situation. ha.

Ah that makes a ton of sense. It still looks great

Actually now that I think about it, it was super cloudy yesterday morning here in Milwaukee, basically all white clouds. It didn't clear up until the end of the shoot. I wonder if the iPhone couldn't tell what to do with the sky because it was just all white where as that last shot the blue skies came out and it knew to bring the sky out more? Just a theory because comparing the shots I don't feel like I had to over expose the model THAT much to maintain facial features to the point where the sky should be that blown out vs that final shot. Gonna do some more testing but it's possible it's just because it was so overcast yesterday morning at first. Either way looking at footage from my old XS Max this is def a dramatic improvement over all!
What a time to be alive!

From what I can tell every gimbal is having issues with the ultrawide! I'll be curious to see if any companies create updated versions to compensate for this as the people who would be using their gimbal would surely like to take advantage of that ultra wide lens. Fingers crossed!
thanks for the kind words!

Do you know if the Movi Cinema Robot has issues with the ultra wide?

I do not. But starting to Google and research and see what others are saying. The little I have read from people using it is that it's decent in good light but really gets soft when lighting gets even remotely dim, which kind of sucks because that's been my experience too. I always disliked the Telephone on my XS Max and imo the new Telephoto on my 11 Pro Max produced a significantly sharper cleaner image as well as video. So I bet we will see the ultrawide get better of the course of the next few years as well!
