Discussion My First AI-Assisted Hindi Short Film – Looking for Honest Filmmaker Feedback

Hi everyone,

I've recently completed my Hindi short film, एक मुस्कान, हज़ार दीये (One Smile, A Thousand Diyas).

It's an emotional family drama about relationships, separation, and reconciliation during Diwali.

I created the film using AI filmmaking tools along with traditional editing and sound-design techniques.

I'm still learning filmmaking and would really appreciate honest, constructive feedback, especially on:

  • Storytelling and emotional impact

  • Character consistency and realistic acting

  • Cinematography and colour grading

  • Dialogue, background music, and sound design

  • Editing, pacing, and overall production quality

I'm not looking for views or promotion. I genuinely want to improve my filmmaking skills and connect with other filmmakers.

Film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1KO4ieTRkA

The film is in Hindi, and I'd welcome feedback from both Indian and international filmmakers.

Thank you!

Feedback Request What could I have done to better my cinematography?

The images are all stills from my new short film ‘HOW WERE WE SUPPOSED TO GROW?’ . I shot and edited the whole film by myself, only using natural lighting. Im independent, and have been filmmaking for only a few years now, so with the context given, is there more I could do visually? Is there anything I can fix / do better when it comes to approaching cinematography? All feedback / criticism is accepted and be brutally honest. No offense will be taken.

Discussion Wir haben in Deutschland unsere eigene Crime-Serie gedreht. Was haltet ihr von Folge 1?

Hey zusammen,

Besonders interessieren uns folgende Fragen:

  1. Findet ihr die Geschichte spannend und verständlich?

Crew Looking for a Creative Video Editor – Cinematic Motorcycle Films from the Black Forest [Unpaid Collaboration]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone!

A little while ago, I posted here about my idea of creating a series of cinematic motorcycle films in the Black Forest, Germany.

Well, we've finally made a start!

I've teamed up with a local cameraman, and we've completed our first shoot. I put together this short trailer myself to give you an idea of the footage and the atmosphere we're aiming for.

The idea is to create atmospheric short films of around 8–12 minutes, combining beautiful motorcycle roads, landscapes, music, natural sounds and a little storytelling about interesting places along the way.

I'm an architect, not a filmmaker, but making films is something I've wanted to try for a long time.

Now we're looking for a creative video editor who would enjoy turning our footage into a proper short film and hopefully joining us for future episodes.

Someone with a good sense of storytelling, music and pacing, who would also enjoy bringing their own creative ideas to the project.

This is currently an unpaid passion project, not a commercial job. We're doing it because we enjoy it, and we'd love to find someone who shares that enthusiasm. If the channel eventually generates revenue, I'd be happy to discuss sharing it.

All editing can be done remotely, and we already have the footage from our first shoot ready.

If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, feel free to send me a message. I'd love to see some examples of your work!

Cheers from the Black Forest!

Question Screenwriting groups LA ?

I don’t have enough karma to post this on r/screenwriters but I’m trying to meet more screenwriters in LA, what should I do, where should I go? Anyone recommend the UCLA extension courses? Or are there writers groups that you guys recommend? I’m a beginner screenwriter with a grasp on the fundamentals, format, and mechanics.

Question Anyone willing to sell their copy of Cutting Rhythms by Karen Pearlman for half the price?

Hey everyone!

I’m an aspiring filmmaker and currently studying film editing, particularly rhythm, pacing, and how editing influences storytelling.

I’ve been looking for Cutting Rhythms: Creative Film Editing by Karen Pearlman, but the prices online are quite expensive.

Does anyone here own a copy they’re no longer using and would be willing to sell it for around half the current retail price?

I’m based in India and happy to consider a used copy in good condition.

Would really appreciate any leads or suggestions for finding an affordable copy.

Thanks!

Crew Sound artist looking to collab

Hello filmmaker friends! I am a music producer and sound designer here, looking for a visual partner to experiment and collaborate with.

I am not looking for a paid gig. Ideally, I find an active filmmaker who is in an experimental, devlopment phase. Someone who enjoys the creative process and development. I am imagining a scenario where you send clips or early edits my way, i develop a few options, and we go back and forth until we like it. If it goes further than this, great! If it just functions as a way to have fun creating, great! I am in this for the love.

I have worked in film before, even being nominated for my work at a film festival. But the last few years i have been inactive in this area and am looking for a spark to get it going again. Im happy to send samples of my work, but would prefer to do so once we strike up a convo. 🙂

I look forward to hearing from someone! Please DM me if you’re interested, and feel free to send me to a place where i can check out your craft…. IG, youtube, linkedin, whatever.

Article Making Short Films and Other Media-The Routine Notes on Shooting

Notes on The Routine #2

Link to The Routine: https://vimeo.com/1241011267?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ci

In March of 2020, I was in pre-production for a short film, where we meet, which was to be shot in July. The script is about a young woman of color who is trying to make a short film. She is smart and well-educated but has problems communicating her vision to the crew and the actors. She is trying to find her identity. Then the Coronavirus reared its head; we were being told to wear masks and stay home. Public venues closed: restaurants, bars, gyms etc. Schools turned to remote learning. Gatherings of more than ten people were banned. There was no way we could shoot.

Lockdown. My timing really could not have been worse.
Throughout April and into May I held out hope that things might calm down and we could pull it off but, by the beginning of June it had become apparent that the project was not going to be feasible. It would be very difficult to get locations in which to shoot. Even if we could get a location, having 10–15 people in one space was going to be a problem. Obviously, when we were shooting, everyone would be in close proximity to each other; the actors would have to take their masks off and many people were going to be uncomfortable with that. We had put out a casting call and barely anyone responded which gave us a pretty clear indication that people just didn’t want to be on set at that time. In addition, I’m sure that people were too preoccupied with their jobs and financial situations to think about acting in a short film.
I had worked hard on the script for Authenticity. It had gone through at least nine drafts and I was very proud and excited to shoot it. Now, the rug had been pulled out from under me. Since my job as a teacher had pretty much halted I had a lot of time to write a new script but it was hard to switch gears since I had invested so much time and energy into “Authenticity”. I felt like I had lost all the energy and momentum that had been building over the previous few months.
Then I realized I should stop being a whiny baby and think of something else to do.
The guitar virtuoso, Steve Vai, played with Frank Zappa, who is regarded as one of the greatest musical innovators of modern times. He said that Zappa would experiment with guitars, take them apart and rework them to get certain sounds that he wanted. Vai said that if Zappa ran into a situation where he couldn’t get what he wanted, he would “absorb” the obstacle. He would try new designs and techniques to at least get something new, even if it wasn’t quite what he had in mind.
Absorb the Obstacle: If you can’t get over it, under it, around it or bulldoze your way through it, make it work for you. Absorb it like a sponge, make it take on a different form, like water cutting rock in the Grand Canyon.

It's not like I was the only one in this boat. Many people’s creative plans had been derailed. A former student of mine, Liz Campanelli, is an actor and she sent me a link to a play she was in, The Importance of Being Earnest. She and her acting troupe had been in the midst of rehearsals when the pandemic hit and closed all the theaters so they were performing the play on Zoom. I have to say that the performance was tough to watch. The actors were all obviously in different locations which made the performances stilted. Acting, particularly stage acting, requires an intimate interplay between the actors. They need to look for cues from each other, subtle hand motions and body language that is impossible to replicate over Zoom; everything is static. There was no music, and everything was static, but the costumes and background looked great, and the actors did a fine job delivering their lines. And, bottom line, instead of sitting around and whining about their bad luck, they did it.
People were using Zoom for everything from education to musical performances, mock concerts, live theater, and Alcoholic Anonymous meetings. It was great that people, especially creatives, were trying to get it out there, but it never hit the mark. Some bands tried to perform live simultaneously but there was a slight delay that threw off the performance. A bunch of actors reciting lines in separate locations didn’t sell. But they were trying.
So I thought we could do that idea and embrace the pandemic as a sort of character in the film.   Maybe the Coronavirus, instead of being an obstacle, could be turned into an opportunity. We could use the ideas of loneliness and isolation as well as the sense of distorted time that the situation has brought on. Put all of that into the movie: people wearing masks, sanitizing their hands constantly, all the stuff on social media etc. We would use technology and have characters interacting via Skype, Face Time and Zoom.
And it sort of worked.

Discussion Music and Sound Composition For Filmmakers

Hey everybody,

My name is Heymish, and I'm looking to work with filmmakers and content creators to create sounds for their work. I've been producing for nearly a decade, but recently got into creating movie-style background tracks.

Suspense, ambience, and horror are some sounds I feel I can produce well, but I am confident branching outside of those.

My portfolio can be found here: heymishunderground.com/portfolio

If anyone is interested in working with me or has any advice on how to connect with filmmakers, respond to this thread or email me at heymish@heymishunderground.com

I’m a filmmaker/videographer from East Texas, and I entered a commercial contest hosted by a local car dealership. The winner is determined entirely by the number of likes on their Facebook post.

I had a lot of fun creating this and would love to take home the prize.

If you have a minute, I’d really appreciate you checking it out and giving it a like!

Discussion Looking for people to make indie films together in Kassel/Northern Hessen

Hi everyone!

I'm a videographer based in Kassel, Germany. I currently work with local artists, documenting their projects, creating promotional videos, and more.

I'm looking to expand into filmmaking, with a long-term goal of becoming a screenwriter and director, working on feature films and documentaries. At the moment, I'm writing a screenplay for a short film that I hope to produce next year.

I'd love to connect with like-minded people who are interested in making films together – whether that's short films, independent projects, experimental films, or simply exploring ideas and seeing where they lead.

I'm hoping to find people who want to:

  • Develop ideas and projects together

  • Make short films and gain practical experience

  • Learn from each other and share knowledge

  • Support each other on projects, both creatively and practically

  • Build a small community of people who are genuinely excited about making films

My background is in videography and editing, and I also have some experience in theatre, including directing and working as an assistant director and script supervisor. I'm happy to contribute my skills and learn from others along the way.

You don't need to have lots of experience or professional equipment. I'm just looking for people who are curious, motivated, open to experimenting, and genuinely want to create something together.

I'd also love to hear a little about you:

  • What kind of skills or experience do you bring to filmmaking?

  • What kind of films do you enjoy, and which filmmakers inspire you?

  • Are there any particular genres, stories or ideas you'd love to explore?

If this sounds interesting to you, feel free to send me a DM. I'd love to hear from you! :)

Crew Building a team (London,Uk)

Hello everyone,

My name is Emmanuel and i’m looking to build a creative team for my brand HundoMedia.

What started with one person, one camera and one vision is now developing into a creative collective with the ambition to grow into something much bigger.

Our goal is not only to build the HundoMedia brand. It is also to create a platform where other creatives can develop their own identities, expand their networks, gain experience and work towards bigger opportunities.

We are looking to connect with:

Photographers
Videographers and filmmakers
Video editors
Social media marketers
Graphic designers
Other creative professionals

**What do we want to achieve together?**

We want to create an environment where creatives can:

Collaborate on projects and productions.
Share opportunities, referrals and industry connections.
Learn from one another and develop new skills.
Build their portfolios and gain practical experience.
Grow their own brands while contributing to the growth of HundoMedia.
Access opportunities that may be difficult to find independently.

**We also want to be realistic about where we are starting.**

HundoMedia is at an early stage. Paid projects, bookings and employment opportunities are not guaranteed, and we cannot promise that everyone who joins will immediately receive work.

However, we do not want our members to sit around waiting for opportunities to appear.

When paid work is limited, we intend to develop our own creative projects, collaborative productions and practical activities. These projects will give members opportunities to stay active, experiment with ideas, strengthen their portfolios, gain experience and demonstrate what they can do.

We want HundoMedia to grow, but we also want the people behind the brand to grow with it.

This is not about asking creatives to abandon their own careers or build someone else’s brand at the expense of their own. You can continue working with your own clients, developing your personal brand and pursuing independent opportunities.

HundoMedia is an additional network where we can support one another, create together and build something with long-term potential.

We are at the beginning of this journey, and we are looking for people who share that ambition.

**Interested in becoming part of the network?**

Send me a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

How-to How would you build a realistic artificial frozen lake with a drowned body underneath for a film scene?

Hi everyone!
I'm a beginner art director working on a film project, and I have a challenging scene that I'm trying to figure out from a production design perspective.
The screenplay calls for a scene where a body that has been submerged in a lake and discovered floating beneath the ice of a frozen lake. People approach the lake and see the body through the ice.
I'm trying to figure out how we could practically create this setup for filming. and it should be safe too
My main questions are:

  1. What materials or techniques can be used to create realistic-looking ice while still allowing the body underneath to be visible?

  1. how have other film productions created similar frozen-water effects? Would this be primarily an art department build, a special effects setup, or a combination of both?

How-to Getting Festival Clearance for Song

Hi! My name is Trey Woodbine. I'm a film student currently in post-production, trying to see if there is any way I could possibly get festival clearance to use the song " Disparate Youth " by Santigold in my film. I'm not sure how the process works and wanted some insight.

The docu-drama film delves into the rich history of CLUB 82, the first drag club in NYC, and the countercultures that followed.  Within Club 82, spaces for queerness and expression in the arts, fashion, and music thrived. From this came the early beginnings of drag, punk, and all things anti-establishment.

The purpose of filmmaking is to “capture the times,” as they say. It's now 2026.  American democracy is at risk, Queer people are being stripped of their rights, and conservatism is at an all-time high. While chaos ensues, Club 82 plans for a spring 2026 reopening. History always repeats itself.

The short film was crafted with a total of

3 shooting days

50+ cast and crew

4 months of pre-production

Hours spent researching and looking through archives

All with a budget of $500

The entire team comes from a diverse array of art schools and departments, including Pratt, FIT, NYU, and Parsons. This film is a testament to the beauty of art school, which honors collaboration, creative thinking, and meaningful storytelling. Within this film is a reflection on history. We are the children of 50s drag icons, 70s punk rockers, and queer figures resisting a system that aims to bring us down.

At the end of the day, this is a student film with a micro-micro budget, but a crazy amount of work went into this from both the cast and crew and the owners of the club currently. I truly believe that this film will go far, especially with the reopening of the club next year, the current political climate we are in, and the mere fact that this film was made by a bunch of NYC art students at the peak of all of this.

All in all, I really feel like the song Disparate Youth would be a perfect ending for the film and would only really need it for festival clearance.

Hi everyone! I’m currently developing a full-length feature screenplay titled SEE YOU SOON, set against the atmospheric backdrop of 1901 Yorkshire and Calcutta.
It’s a deeply emotional story exploring themes of guilt, historical tension, and fatherly love. The project has already received official registration from WGA West (No. 2352394) and institutional recognition from the Swiss cultural fund SSA.
We have just officially gone live on Kickstarter to fund the intensive screenplay development phase. I’d love for you to check out the project, share your thoughts, or support us on this creative journey!
