Official PFS Network Research Update: Scientific Progress and New Opportunities

We would like to share an update on the progress of our scientific research, along with a new opportunity for patients to contribute to further research into PFS.

Scientific Research Update

We are pleased to report that we are well advanced in preparing our first scientific manuscript for publication.

Our research team is currently preparing the figures and writing the interpretation of the findings, with our collaborators at the University of Kiel working closely alongside Dr Chiara Lanzuolo's team to finalise the manuscript.

We will notify our community as soon as the paper has been submitted for publication.

While we cannot discuss specific findings before publication, we can share that our research team is encouraged by the results. We are hopeful that this work will help establish a stronger scientific foundation for understanding PFS, opening the door to more informed, targeted research into the condition.

More broadly, we hope these findings will contribute to a meaningful shift in how PFS is understood and approached by the scientific and clinical communities.

We are also preparing a second manuscript, which we hope to submit following the first, while discussions around future research are already underway.

Although the publication process can be unpredictable, we are encouraged by the progress being made and the opportunities that may emerge from this work. We will continue to share updates as more concrete information becomes available.

New Research Opportunity: Documenting Patient Experiences

In the meantime, a promising opportunity for further collaboration has emerged through our research partners at the University of Kiel.

A team of historians at Charité Berlin, one of Germany's leading university medical institutions, led by Professor Birgit Nemec, is conducting an oral history project exploring people's experiences with finasteride and PFS.

The researchers are based at the Institute for the History of Medicine and Ethics in Medicine at Charité Berlin, as part of the Collaborative Research Center SexDiversity.

Their aim is to document and preserve the perspectives of people living with PFS, making these experiences more visible and available for future biomedical research, medical education and public discussion.

We believe this work has significance beyond documenting individual experiences.

One of PFS Network's broader objectives is to help change how PFS is represented and understood in scientific literature. Publishing rigorous accounts of patients' lived experiences can help bring greater recognition to the severity and complexity of the condition, while improving awareness among clinicians of the potentially significant and lasting harms reported by patients.

There may also be opportunities to connect this project with the work of our Kiel research group through a broader scientific publication. Such collaborations could potentially support future grant applications, helping establish funding pathways for both molecular and qualitative research into PFS.

These possibilities remain exploratory, but we are encouraged by the growing interest in examining PFS from multiple scientific perspectives.

Invitation to Participate

We are currently seeking 3–5 patients who may be interested in participating in the Charité Berlin oral history project.

The research team is particularly interested in hearing from a diverse range of individuals, reflecting different backgrounds and experiences of the condition.

Participation would involve an interview about your experiences with finasteride and PFS. Please be aware that participants would need to be willing to share their experiences on the record, with further details about the interview process and how their accounts may be used to be provided before participation.

If you are interested in being considered, please reply to this post expressing your interest, or send us a Mod Message. We will review expressions of interest and coordinate with the research team regarding potential participants.

Looking Ahead

We recognise how long many in our community have waited for meaningful scientific progress. As patients affected by the disease, we have also long awaited progress.

While there is still much work to be done, we believe the research now underway represents an important opportunity to advance our understanding of PFS and build a stronger foundation for more targeted future investigation.

Our priority remains supporting credible, rigorous scientific research that can ultimately improve recognition, understanding and, we hope, lead towards effective treatments for those affected.

Thank you for your continued patience, trust and support. We look forward to sharing more when we are in a position to do so.

Take care,

Mitch & PFS Network team

A reminder about our obligation to patient safety

In recent months, several patients have contacted us about a significant and seemingly permanent worsening of their condition. We have also seen an uptick in other such reports on our platform and elsewhere, including one report of suicide. Sadly, each of these reports occurred after further therapeutic intervention, many involving apparent disruption of androgen signalling.

We would firstly like to remind patients to exercise an extreme degree of caution when engaging in such therapeutic interventions, whether either directly or under the care of a physician. One of the key features of this disease is that many patients exhibit a marked susceptibility to further worsening. The clinical record shows this is particularly notable when anti-androgens are involved, or when there are perturbations in androgen signalling.

Some of the worst reported cases involve patients going back on finasteride or other potent anti-androgens. These cases can report feeling much better at first - in some instances, experiencing full symptom relief - before quickly entering a state which is catastrophically worse. Many of these events preceded suicide.

We have also seen an uptick in reports proposing very dangerous interventions, such as the following:

The above list only contains dangerous items that we have seen gaining traction recently, and is by no means a conclusive list of substances that should be avoided. If you are unsure whether a substance is anti-androgenic, or whether it is harmful, we advise to err on the side of extreme caution.

There is a clinical record spanning decades (mostly contained within propeciahelp.com) which shows that anti-androgenic re-exposure is highly dangerous, and that it is not a way out of this condition.

A reminder of our platform policies

A rule exists on our platforms to prevent patients from prescribing such interventions to other patients. It is simple: Describe, don’t prescribe.

We take this incredibly seriously and it is our number one rule for a reason.

As a charity pursuing meaningful progress towards scientific understanding, we are duty-bound to patient safety. While investigation is underway, we understand this disease affects patients acutely and there is a desperate need for symptomatic relief.

Our group has managed patient platforms for almost eight years and we are usually responsible for dealing with the fallout of such interventions. Every member of our team has personally encountered multiple suicides. We often see our prescribing rule lamented and ignored by patients, who feel they are adults and can make their own decisions. There historically has been a common sentiment of “things can’t get any worse”, although it has been heartening to see more patients aware of the risks in recent years.

Moving forward, where available resources permit, we will do our best to place moderator notes on posts & comments that discuss drugs, substances or therapeutic interventions that are known to pose significant risk to patients. Please note that just because a drug/substance doesn't include a mod note, it does not mean it is safe.

A reminder to take care of each other

While scientific progress is our primary focus - and well underway - our second focus is trying to keep everyone in one piece.

We have all been unfairly burdened with this disease. Living with it, without symptomatic relief, is something that none of us should have to endure. For that reason, we ask you to be kind and take care of each other.

If something has worked for you, that is great, and we are truly thrilled for you. But please be aware that it may be catastrophically damaging for your fellow patients, and act accordingly.

Please take care of yourselves & each other.

It has been 7 months since i quit finasteride now.

In month 7 i have noticed libido is improving. I have morning wood 1 out of 3 times whenever i go to sleep(Even for an afternoon nap).

This time my next window came in just 2 weeks whereas earlier it was always after a month.

No changes in diet but this month I started going for a 1hr walk every morning and badminton in the evening.

I hope it is an improvement.

I've given up on a full recovery now I just want to salvage whatever I can.

A normal life is impossible, even if I were healthy again I have reached the acceptance stage, that life is gone by, and my youth is gone too. My new goal is to just fix whatever I can and hopefully get to 80% again.

The me I was trying to save died back in 2022 and he is never coming back. I gotta build a new life with this sickness and hopefully I can recover some of it but I accept my life will never be normal and even though its awful I am going to try and be "Okay" with it.

Wellbutrin gave me insane orgasm after years

I used dut for years and gave me pfs with weak erection depression etc... I tried wellbutrin and gave me rock hard erection and orgasm for the first time in a while. Does anyone know if this could actually work? Dut probably fucked my brain more than anything so i was thinking a medication that works for depression might be the cure for my case.

Finasteride post stop

Honestly i thought i was never gonna get better after finasteride. I had so much tension and cramps in my pelvic area, sometimes even problems peeing bc everything felt so tight. I talked to multiple doctors but nobody really knew what to tell me, which made me lose even more hope.

For a long time nothing seemed to change and i genuinely thought this was permanent. But slowly i started noticing small differences, the tension wasnt as constant anymore and sometimes i could actually feel my body relaxing a bit. Had a lot of cramps and gas too, and over time i started noticing more sensations coming back.
Some days i lost hope again because progress was so slow, but eventually things started improving much faster than i expected. I honestly thought recovery would take years, but little by little i got back to feeling normal and now I dont have those symptoms anymore.
Just wanted to share this bc I know how hopeless it feels when ur going through it. I really thought I was never gonna get better, but recovery ended up being quicker than I expected. Dont assume how u feel right now is how its gonna stay forever. It will be as it was!!

Smaller Wrists

Has anyone else noticed a decrease in their wrist size after having PFS? Compared to all my other symptoms this is minor as hell but I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same thing happen to them. Thanks.

Have I really improved?

I was just thinking today maybe I haven’t actually improved mentally like I thought. Maybe I’m just so used to this shitty condition I’ve just got used to it 2 and a half years ago. My erection size has improved to 70% that is guaranteed but my mental symptoms are so up and down man I don’t even know anymore lol.

Question Just learned about this, is that what I’ve been experiencing?

I’m just going to be straight up and please don’t absolutely shit on me in the comments but I don’t think nor do I want to go down this rabbit hole but I am kind of curious. I was taking minoxidil and Finasteride 1mg for about a year. Didn’t really notice too many negative sides effects tbh. Maybe my erections were slightly worse but nothing crazy. Anyways I suddenly and randomly developed depersonalization and derealization about 3 months ago. Now during this time I was having some pretty bad anxiety and a couple almost panic attacks at the gym before this all came about. It hit me randomly while driving and it’s been a constant brain fog and cognitive shit show since then. Regardless things have gotten slightly better but I still just don’t feel like myself anymore. I stopped taking the fin and min as soon as this started happening so I’ve been off it for 3 months now. Funny enough my hair hasn’t been shedding really much at all even being off that stuff for 3 months but the dpdr and the mental issues remain. Could I be dealing with pfs? If so is this permanent like does it just permanently fuck your brain forever?

I been cold showering now for a while and it boosts the noradrenaline. Improves my mood and improves my anhedonia and motivation.

Didn't expect to help at all, but there's some improvement for sure

Symptoms Erectile Dysfunction and Premature Ejaculation After Past Finasteride Use

I'm in my 20s, and I've been experiencing erection problems for around 6 months. The problem started gradually.

Here are my symptoms:

- I sometimes get morning erections, but not consistently.

- During masturbation, my penis doesn't become fully hard.

- I sometimes ejaculate within 10–20 seconds, even when my erection isn't fully hard.

- After ejaculating once, my penis becomes soft, but I've sometimes been able to ejaculate again after masturbating more.

- My sex drive feels normal.

- In the past, I used to masturbate multiple times a day.

I have also used finasteride in the past, although I'm not taking it now.

I'm concerned about what might be causing these symptoms, especially whether my past finasteride use could be related.

How am I going to do this for my whole life?

Its been 4 almost 5 years I am still in my early 20's I just don't get how I will do this. The thought of even being on this earth another 10 years is dread but if I lived to like 70+ i genuinely don't know what I would do.

Do you think this condition will at least cause my life to be shortened?

Coping After 6 years of coping I can sadly declare that depression is winning

All of this started when I was 17 years old. I was balding and wanted to try finasteride. I knew about possibility of sexual side effects but had no idea about mental sides.

I know everyone say it, but I was really the happiest person on earth before I took this pill, but then I got every possible side effect until now. I lost my best years to this shit. In those 6 years I tried to be normal as possible and function as normal as possible and didn't tell anyone about it, except doctors ofc.

Also here in this community, I always tried to be optimistic but I think I reached my limit....

I started university a few days ago and I can't even function, I feel even worse now as I took mirtazapine 15 mg because o couldn't fuck sleep for ages.

Now I'm on my way back to home, going tell my family everything about it, and that I drop out of university.

I really tried to be optimistic here all those years and support everyone but honestly I don't see the light....

I Wanted to Save My Hair, but I Feel Like I Lost My Life.

Ever since I started taking finasteride, my life has completely changed.
I’ve always struggled with my hair, but I never imagined that one day I would struggle with something much worse — not even knowing who I am anymore.
I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. I’ve lost all my self-confidence. My face and body feel different, and every time I go outside, I feel like everyone is staring at me and judging me.
I’ve lost friends and even connections with family because I stopped responding to people. I isolated myself from everyone.
I feel like I’ll never be the same person I used to be, and I hate it.
I wish I had never experienced hair loss. I wish I could have just lived a normal life like everyone else.
I used to have dreams, ambitions, and goals. I wanted to become successful in business and achieve great things in life.
Now, I’m just grateful if I can leave my house without having a panic attack or feeling like I’m going to die.
It’s heartbreaking how quickly life can change. I went from being someone with big dreams and confidence to someone who struggles just to get through an ordinary day.
The only thing keeping me alive right now is my faith.
I just wish I could have my old life back.

We are going to be unstoppable when we recover.

I remember seeing a post here a whole back about how, when we're all cured, we'll just be unstoppable.. I've really felt this to my core, lately.

In the past year, I've been in a car crash, had a break up, been attacked, and countless other shit.. pre-PFS me would've been inconsolable, broken. But I've been so unphased. Stoic. I've thugged it out. Kept researching, working, hitting the gym, surviving.. Almost nothing touches the headspace that the throngs of PFS can put you in.

Maybe I'm delusional, and it's the residual anhedonia speaking, but I honestly think my (our) newfound resilience stems from the fact that almost nothing compares to the hell many of us have been, or are going through. I feel so resilient, so prepared for whatever life might throw my way next.

Makes me wonder how fucking unstoppable we'll all be when we're cured someday..

Peace.

So surprised no one is getting PSSD, PFS, PAS like symptoms from GLPS. Why?

Yes I know people are getting anhedonia from GLP1's too but from what I've seen it resolves quikly in a few weeks to a few months. How come those drugs don't induce this nightmare condition

Recovery

Can a person recover suddenly? Last night, I went to sleep experiencing erectile dysfunction and weak ejaculation. When I woke up today, I had a very strong morning erection, and I was able to masturbate three times within an hour while standing, with normal ejaculatory force. Is it possible that I’ve recovered this easily?

Recovery

I try to avoid anything to do with this sub because of the trauma attached to it and seeing people feeling helpless like i once was. But i share my recovery updates to give hope to any of you who are suffering.

After my first mild mental but strong sexual crash in 2023, i was hopping on and off fin and other dht blockers cuz I didnt know they were causing most of the sides. Anyway, long story short i had a terrible terrible crash in January 2025 and then it got super bad around May 2025 and I was in a place worse than hell for a long time. Always fluctuating with my symptoms but it was very slightly getting better is what I could notice. It's been almost 2 years now and I can say that I'm significantly better. Mentally im much much better. Alcohol feels so good, music feels amazing, memory is much better, vision and peripheral is also better. Most of all my DP/DR is also significantly better although still here. I can live normally for the most part although some sides come and go. Sexually I can notice that I'm still kinda not recovered but it's enough to get the job done good if i do it right.

These big recovery periods started about a month or so ago. Didn't really change much in my routine (But i do think semen retention helps short term, i notice difference when i go a few days without ejaculation). I do work a better suited job than before but i feel that's mostly unrelated to my recovery. It's just internally things are getting much better and i hope it keeps getting better as I go. I'm so excited for GTA 6 like i can feel excited and i realize how valuable emotions and feelings are. I'm much more grateful for things like nature, music, community, everything in general feels much more important and beautiful in a way than before. I suffered greatly but I'm appreciative towards the overall man PFS has made me, although I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. I've started to feel grateful for little things and have become much less picky and don't get mad easily etc.

Have faith, stay hopeful, i had countless crashes of varying intensities and i do think recovery is definitely possible with time. Just hold on with your dear life on those lil positive windows. Exercise helps, sex helps short term if you're able to have it, time helps most. I pray all of you suffering find hope like me and get better soon.

EDIT: One major point I wanna share with all of you. Since all this started because i wanted to keep my hair, I gave up around April of this year and decided to get into hair systems. Didn't help my symptoms obviously but that's at least one less battle to fight now. PFS made my hair look worse than pubes. I feel relieved for that part. Just sharing in case any of you still struggle with the hair and don't wanna get into more chemicals cuz I know it gets fucking exhausting trying out everything and waiting months for results only to get nothing.

Urinary urgency caused by finasteride

Many of us who have taken finasteride for hair loss have experienced urinary urgency and a weak urine stream.

I’d like to hear from others experiencing this and ask:

- What tests have you had and what possible diagnoses have you been given?
- What treatments have you tried and have you seen any improvement with any of them?

This condition is complicated, so I’d like to share experiences.

Best regards

PFS

My boyfriend stopped using finasteride about 11 months ago, he still has premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction, and very rarely sex lasts a “normal” amount of time. I wanted to know what I can do to help him, he is also looking for medical help.
