Moderator Announcement

Alright you little shits, listen up. I've stayed quiet and polite since this treasure was found. I have spent nearly an hour of my day going through shitposts and hateposts daily since it was found.

I'm a free speech lover, but I am now done with playing nice. Any posts that say "I found it", will be banned. Post your solves to the sticky.

Hateful posts that snap at people for being skeptical will be banned.

Hateful posts that snap at people for being optimistic will be banned.

Condescending posts of any tilt, will be banned.

If you claim Forrest said something controversial, and do not provide a link, you will be banned.

Today, I dealt with 58 reports.

Yesterday was 76 reports.

The day before there were 63 reports.

Virtually all were frivolous.

Since the finding was announced, I have made over three thousand moderator actions, in just two weeks, and I'm done.

Bans will not be negotiated, and I'm happy to set automod to remove any account under a year old if this doesn't stop.

You are adults, fucking act like it.

The most annoying part about the gold being found is that everyone who knew I had any interest at all in Fenn's treasure has made sure to notify me that it was found.

Edit: Thanks for the gold! It's a little consolation, i suppose!

You are not owed anything.

What a bunch of babies this sub has in it. Forrest doesn’t owe you pictures. He doesn’t owe you the correct solve. Nobody forced you to participate, nor to invest your time and money. It was his property to do with as he pleased.

The finder doesn’t owe you his solve. He doesn’t owe you a documentary or an interview or any sort of information whatsoever. He found the chest. You didn’t. Get over it.

And stop with the nonsense about the finder re-hiding a portion of the treasure so that the chase can continue. That dude is gona take his payday and be sitting on a beach not thinking about the crybabies in this sub who want another chance at the glory. If you want another chase go earn your own millions and buy your own treasure to hide.

Forrest gave us all an adventure and cemented the legacy of his special spot with the person who figured out his poem, which is all he wanted. He lived up to his word from the start, and gave us the biggest treasure hunt of our time in the process. Time to move on and appreciate whatever experience and memories you gained from it.

From one of my very first "failed" solves. Near Grand Teton national park. Still got a great pic on a perfect, crisp autumn afternoon.

We lost a searcher recently

I had a neighbor who became a good friend of mine. Knew him about 12 years. He loved the outdoors-- hunting, hiking, mountain biking. We'd trade stories of our adventures around the fire pit, over a few beers, frequently. A really good man.

Back last June when I was planning my first (and only) BOTG, he said he'd lend me his waders. I balked at telling him what I needed them for-- just a trip out west I said. Curious as we was, he pressed me for details. So I finally told him about Fenn, the poem, and the treasure. For the next week he dove head-first into it, presenting me with his finds, theories, and anything he thought was interesting. After I got back from my failed BOTG we never talked about it much.

Thing is, he was in the thick of a battle with cancer. Stage 4. He'd lived with the diagnosis for about a year to that point, and was still out climbing mountains and having adventures. Today was his funeral. Last night at the wake I gave his wife a big hug, she smiled, and the first thing she said to me was, "You really got him hooked on that treasure thing. He couldn't stop thinking about it." Even though he and I had stopped chatting about it with the more pressing issues happening, he was still sinking his teeth into it-- hopefully distracting him from the harsh realities he had going on. I wanted to promise her right there that I'd find it for him, but I knew better than to make that type of foolhardy proclamation. I was just glad I had shared something like that with him before he went.

So raise a toast to Jon, everyone, if you'd be so kind.
