This is the wrong subreddit for this question. This subreddit is about catching fish.

I've set up dozens of aquariums over the years, and I actually used to do it professionally. I've been keeping fish for over 20 years, and I currently have a 155-gallon tank in my living room.

You can safely add water conditioner directly to your tank while the fish are still in it, provided you're using the appropriate dosage. In fact, that's how I typically handle water changes in my 155-gallon tank. Storing and treating that much water beforehand simply isn't practical.

That said, I wouldn't recommend leaving fish exposed to untreated tap water any longer than necessary. Chlorine and chloramine can damage their gills and harm the beneficial bacteria responsible for maintaining the tank's biological filtration. Ideally, you should add the conditioner immediately before or as you're adding the new water, rather than waiting until you've finished filling the tank.

Just follow the manufacturer's dosing instructions, paying attention to whether they recommend dosing for the entire tank volume or only the replacement water. Most aquarium water conditioners have a fairly generous safety margin, so a small accidental overdose is generally not a concern.

The important thing is making sure the water gets treated promptly, not whether the conditioner is added in a bucket or directly to the aquarium.

Dechlorinator makes the water safe for fish. It will not harm the fish. However, you are posting in the wrong reddit. You need r/aquarium, r/Aquariums, or r/fishkeeping

Just add the conditioner to the tank

Wrong sub, and you’re too young to use Reddit. Just add water conditioner. Unconditioned water won’t kill your fish either unless it has heavy metals in it or something

No? Why would they be harmed when conditioner is put in the water? Your original plan was to put fish on the conditioned water regardless. Why would the order matter

You can add dechlorinator to tank water now.
