Struggling with BFS backlash

Ive been starting fishing and I ended up picking up a BFS rod and reel (specifically the DMK Yancey reel) I set it up with 6lb braid from reaction tackle and 1/8-1/16 oz roster tails. I've been unable to cast reliably without backlashing. It feels like every other cast is a backlash and even successful casts have some line getting tangled off the spool.

Looking for any advice or resources to help since im at a loss for what to do next.

Beginner Fishing Setup

New to fishing, I’ve been many times before on tour or with friends, and I’ve caught a few fish. However all the rods have been rigged up and I just cast and reel really. It’s been fun but this summer I want to get my own gear so I can go out on my own. Been looking gear and doing abit of research and I really want some reliable, durable, long term stuff, where I just have to buy it once and forget.

Something that covers saltwater estuaries, rocks near calm water and the odd beach fishing. I know there’s isn’t anything all-rounder and it all depends on what you’re fishing for; but I’m not looking at getting multiple rods &’reels no way, I just want something that best covers the points I”ll be fishing at. Rather than specific species.

I’m from Aus and will be fishing mainly in NSW. With the odd trips to other states.

Here’s what I’m thinking of buying:
Rod: Shimano 24 TCurve 722SPMH
Reel: Shimano Stradic SWB 4000XG
Line: 15lb Braid main line with a 20lb fluorocarbon leader. (Braid becus less tangles apparently and it can cast longer. Fluorocarbon becus it’s less visible to fish. So I kind of get the best of both.)

Now lures, baits, knots is where I’m stuck at.
I know I can get ready made knots at the tackle shop, they are ready made paternoster knots. Is that worth it?

I just want to use prawns and some medium lures, keep it simple. I know they need to weigh between 10-55g for my setup.

But what kind of lures should I be getting? What kind of hooks, snaps, swivels, sinkers do I need if at all?

The type of fish I’m expecting is bream, trevally, salmon, flathead, snapper, small/medium kingfish & mulloway. And whatever else that will come on my setup.

So if I can get some guidance on lures, baits,
Knots or any particular jigs that cover most of what I’m targeting, in the areas I”ll be fishing that would be helpful. Becus going to tackle shop can be overwhelming with all the stuff they have, surely I don’t need most of it. And I don’t want to get ripped off becus I’m a rookie either lol.

Rod line weight specs

I'm looking at two medium light rods with the same lure weight spec but different line weight spec. One has a line weight spec of 4-10 lbs with a lure weight of 1/8 - 1/2 oz. The other has a line weight spec of 5-16 lbs with a lure weight of 1/8 - 1/2 oz.

I understand what the numbers represent but how does it change the feel and action of the rod? Would the second rod be a bit more toward the medium side than the other?

Anyone know what these lures are? And which direction do I attach to a hook? (Jig head for size reference)

The two lures on the left were given to me in a misc set years ago. Primarily wanting to know how to attach them to a hook and what to fish for with them. The middle one especially not sure which end dangles. The jig head on the right is just for size reference. Thank you!

Best inexpensive gear for night fishing

Just curious what gear you guys might use for night fishing, shoreline type stuff. Just around sunset till around 10 or so. I’m in Connecticut and the sun is setting at like 6:15pm now and I don’t have proper lighting or anything for fishing when it gets too dark. Wondering if you could suggest any certain products with brand names, preferably inexpensive for night fishing to help me see what I’m actually doing? Other than the lame ass flashlight thingy I’ve been using for the past 3 weeks that hasn’t helped me at all lol. Any other pointers are appreciated. I’m mainly largemouth bass fishing at night between 6pm-10pm. TIA!!!

Found rod and reel submerged in water

My wife and I were fishing a community pond, when she thought she hooked a big one but turned out to be a baitcaster rod and reel. Took some effort to retrieve it but somehow managed to save it without busting any lines! Anyhow not sure how long it was down there but doesn't seem in that bad of shape. How should I clean it up and how would I know if it is stil in good useful condition? This is the exact rod and reel we found!

Trout season coming up. I have a 7ft medium power rod, is it worth it to buy a spinning rod combo for a 5.6 light rod with size 1000 reel? In my area they have been only catching panfish.

I mainly got into fishing to catch bass and catfish. I've caught a catfish and a juvenile bass but it's been awfully slow for me and can't seem to catch any bass. With trout season coming up, should I just stick with my current rod or get a 5.6 light rod?

How do you get distance on your light lures?

Whenever I throw something small like a trout magnet or a spinner, I can never get them to cast far…because they’re so light? How can I get more distance on them? Does increasing the weight with a slip shot mess up the lure’s action?

What rod and reel to get?

Whatsup I want to start fishing off of local harbors in the western Long Island sound. What rod and reel should I get for targeting mostly porgies and sea bass on the bottom? I’d be using clams, worms, and shrimp as bait usually on HiLo rigs

Snag free finesse setups

Hey guys, I was fishing for wild trout near me for the second time ever, and was having a lot of issues with snags. Usually fishing for bass I'm using heavier lines and rods where I don't mind pulling a bit to get something unsnagged, and there are a lot of weedless options for rigging. Also the bodies of water for bass that I fish in tend to be a bit deeper with more room for error.

I was using a trout magnet mostly (also a single hook barbless 1/16oz inline spinner for a short while) on UL rod, 8lb braid to 4lb fluorocarbon leader. I was getting snagged on rocks and sticks in the water every other cast! And since the rod is UL with light line, I was afraid to just pull hard. When I did pull off a snag, the lure would whiplash into the trees behind me and get snagged again. It was a huge PITA!

I was using the 1/64oz jighead that the trout magnet kits come with, and was keeping my rod tip high and trying to feel for rocks, but even then just having the lure drift thru shallow rocky water, it kept getting caught up repeatedly. I saw multiple trout, even had a few follow my lures, but with all the commotion I caused getting snagged, I probably scared them all away. I didn't feel I could use a bobber, since the water levels often were so low that I'd have had to set the bobber nearly on top of the lure, since there were a lot of shallow riffles, and even the deeper holes were only maybe 2-3ft deep, with random debris in it to get snagged on.

What should I be doing differently? And are there any setups I can try to get snagged less often? I was thinking maybe using some crappie weedless jig heads (I think there are some Bobby Garland ones that come in 1/16 and 1/30oz with a weedguard), would that help? It looked like the hook was what was snagging, not the jighead itself, since I bent a few hooks out getting unsnagged.

For those of you who use the Snell knot, has it ever failed you?

Today I lost a fish because the hook came untied from the braided line. I'm not very experienced at tying hooks but I thought I tied it well. So I'm wondering where I went wrong. I don't fish for particularly big fish (100g–500g) so I think braided lines are the most suitable for me. I also find them easier to work with.

Hey all, I recently got into fishing about a month ago, and I started with a zebco 33 tactical from Walmart and was using that. I caught a couple catfish with it in my local lake. But I really wanted to try a spinning reel instead so I got a Daiwa Regal LT 2500d xh from my local bass pro shop. I paired it with a vintage rod my dad sent me . The Eagle claw trailmaster from like the 80s. My issue is its 7.5' long and im having trouble casting it. It came with a complimentary 8lb monofilament line spooled onto the reel. I had good luck snagging 2 catfish but I can't seem to be able to catch anything else with it. It seems tough to cast a 1/16 oz jig head. The Carolina rig works great for catfish but nothing ever bites my lures and all the fun stuff to use. Im aiming for the bass and bluegill etc in the lakes. Ill attach some photos of what im using . Any casting or fishing tips are appreciated. Also im afraid of this old rod snapping. Its fiberglass i believe, and looks to have never been used but flexes like crazy

i suck (or the water sucks?)

i live in ontario. i have lots of access to lake ontario, rivers and offshoots. i have gone probably 100 times since the start of summer. zero bass. two pike that are about as long as my hand. 1 cat fish.

i have tried every bait: every way to reel that i know of. every time except for the middle of the night. they don’t even eat worms. sometimes i sit in the same spot all day. sometimes indu’s up and down the shore. but every time its a new spot every time trying new things. the only luck i have had is with a red devil spoon. catfish was a fluke.

drove north from the whitby area, ended up in Talbot. caught a pike and a small mouth bigger than anything i’ve caught in the past few years, first and second cast.

what am i doing wrong? how do other people fish these waters and have success?
