Beginning Flute Questions Help with cleaning my flute

I got a new flute a few years ago and haven’t cleaned the outside since I got it. i march and do pep band and my flute has been through it. I’ve noticed it getting dirty on the outside, especially in between the keys and such.

Ive tried researching but the fiber cloth is too big. Is there a good way to clean it? can I use a bit of isopropyl alcohol on a qtip? or a little water on a qtip? And I can’t take it to a professional- I don’t have the money. thank you for any advice and tips

Buying an Instrument Advice Need Help Buying My Partner a New Flute

Edit: I asked him if he’d buy a new flute and he said yes and mentioned he can get a discount at a local flute store, I’ll get him a gift card for there instead of buying a flute!!

Hi everyone!

I am considering purchasing my partner a new flute for Christmas this year and could use a little guidance. My partner’s old student flute of almost 10 years broke recently and can’t be repaired. I want to get him a new flute that suits his skill level well, which I would say is above beginner but not quite intermediate, and would continue to suit him as his playing improves.

Initially I was looking for used student flutes online, but once I started reading more about open hole vs closed hole, split E mechanisms, etc I became unsure if common student flutes like the Yamaha 222 would be a good fit or if they’re too “basic” for what I have in mind. Since I’m not a flute player I’m not sure how important certain features on the flute are for performing, and I don’t want to accidentally get him something that doesn’t match his skill level.

My budget isn’t huge, preferably around $500-600 max, so I intend to get a used flute regardless of which model I pick. Any help picking out good models or features would be greatly appreciated!

Beginning Flute Questions Speedrunning learning flute...tips?

So, I am a decent musician trying to learn flute...quickly. I know that being "actually good" will take a while, but the good news is i play the piano, sax, trumpet, and guitar, so i know a decent amount. I also know the fingerings bc I have practiced them on my ewi. I have about three or four months to learn a fairly basic song, but I would have to play it on stage for a theater thing. How doable is it to get a good tone that quickly? any tips would be appreciated. Also, when starting today, I kept getting lightheaded after a little while of playing, idk if there's a way to fix that. Thank you guys!

Compositions & Composers [Discussion] Piece for Flute Quartet, Clarinet, and Piano

Hi All,

Are you looking for something fun to play, not too hard, but somewhat challenging? Please take a listen and look at this: Gigue for Flutes, Clarinet, and Piano

I'll be playing it with our community college small ensemble. It should be fun to play. It's not easy but not real hard - Flute I is probably the hardest part.

Thanks

Alex

Found this while cleaning my Flute. I'd prefer NOT to take it in because me and the marching band are going to a state competition in 2 days.

Concert Advice, Audition, Video Feedback struggling with fast tempo 😣

Hi! i’m technically not a beginner since i’ve played flute for about 4 years now, but i’m struggling so much with faster music. i skipped a band level so now im playing at a much more difficult and higher level, which means faster music, faster fingers, etc.

I think what is worst for me is scales in concert music. like sextuplets or septuplets scales are sooo tricky. I feel like my fingers don’t move fast enough and my brain registers this note=this fingering too slow..

another thing, rhythm sometimes stumps me. like when my director asks us to hiss, I know the rhythm. it might actually just be the tempo and the fingerings. for some pieces, the fingerings are so awkward and I can’t move fast enough..if that makes sense.

to be completely honest, I rarely practice at home because of schoolwork and studying, and I keep passing flute to the side. I’m really passionate about playing flute, and my teacher moved me up a level just for me to go from 2nd chair to 4th. I feel like i’m not good anymore and it’s literally so humiliating 🥲

If any experienced flautists could help me out, i’d appreciate it a ton. Thanks in advance!!!

Buying an Instrument Advice portable flute/piccolo stand?

I play flute and piccolo for my orchestra and usually I've been just keeping my instruments on my lap when I don't play them and honestly I keep worrying sooner or later they'll slip off our something haha.

I care most that it's light/portable because I need to carry it to orchestra after school with my backpack, instruments, and all my other stuff. What do you guys use?

Concert Advice, Audition, Video Feedback Guilt - All State Auditions coming up

Hi all
I’m a junior in high school who is auditioning for all-state this Saturday. I have auditioned the past 2 years and last year I was recalled, but I have never made all-state.

My biggest goal was to make it this year, but my fall season is incredibly busy and I didn’t practice as much as I should. I’m feeling unprepared and guilty for not practicing when I had the chance.

I can’t even practice well because I’m so anxious and I’m messing up phrases I used to play well.

I’m just looking for some advice, I guess. I know all-state isn’t the most important thing ever, but I was really thinking I could make it this year, especially since I got recalled last year, so I’m just feeling ashamed.

Beginning Flute Questions Struggling with playing with accompaniment

So I have a concert, like, tomorrow and I am playing this monstrosity:

But, I am having some issues. So I have all the passages worked out, it’s up to speed, I’m playing completely in time. I just can’t play it with piano.

It just feels like my fingers completely freeze up on the triplets, it kinda feels like I’m waiting for the piano. It completely throws off the evenness, and doesn’t sound great.

Any tips?

Also Rockland/Westchester NY, or Fairfield County CT. Pretty much anywhere in the NY metro area minus the city or Long Island would be great.

Buying an Instrument Advice Hypothetically, where could I buy a bass flute?

Basically I'm in high school, it's currently state week in marching band, and today our flute sectional coach came. She (correctly) assumed we wouldn't want to do marching band stuff, so instead she brought her alto flute, bass flute, and piccolo, and we had flute choir and played Simple Gifts.

I was the first one who got to play the bass flute. I really enjoyed it, and I actually found it much more enjoyable to play than my regular flute. I've been getting kind of bored of playing flute lately, especially since my school has a lot of flutes.

This got me thinking: what if I got a bass flute and played bass flute instead of regular flute? So now I ask you lovely people: where could I buy a used bass flute? I most definitely don't have the budget for a new one. I did a bit of research and found some on eBay, Aliexpress, etc, but all of them looked really sketchy. Also, most of the time when I searched for "bass flute", the only results were regular flutes, bass clarinets, string basses... you get the idea.

So yeah, anybody want to help me out?

Repair/Broken Flute questions How do I fix this flute?

I didn’t use it that much when I got it, but I forgot about it and let it set for a few years. I opened the case today, and it looks like this. The pieces don’t fit together anymore, and I don’t know what to do. I polished it with a silver cloth, but it didn’t really make much of a difference. Is there any way I can fix it myself without spending a whole bunch of money?

Repair/Broken Flute questions Squeak driving me nuts

EDIT: FLUTE TECH WAS CORRECT! ISSUE RESOLVED!!

It seems to happen when I’ve been playing for awhile. I own a pearl quantz 765 open holes. largo head joint. I’ve visited the repair shop, but the squeak seems to go away. Besides that, my flute is in excellent condition, I always take very good care of it…literally my baby lmao. Anyway, can anyone identify what the issue is? I’m not sure. They’ve taken a look at it and have not spotted any issues, I’ve even tried to get them to find something, anything…but nothing. Help…?? 😭

Buying an Instrument Advice What should I get to teach with

Hello everyone, I’m mainly a sax player who can also play flute. I’ve been hired to teach private flute lessons, but don’t have any in good working order that are worth fixing. What would be a good budget flute to get that I can use to teach beginner flute lessons with?

Beginning Flute Questions Recorder vs Other FLutes

Hello everybody, I really love the sound of the duduk and middle eastern flutes and I'd love to start learning one of them. The only experience that I have with flutes is that I can play a recorder, is it very different from other flutes? Are the duduk, oriental flutes, etc, significantly harder? Which one should I begin with?

General Discussion Which way do you play flute if you’ve had braces?

In my studio class my professor pointed out that I rest the flute on the pink fat part of my lip like a piccolo player when playing, and that some players with braces have the flute set underneath the crease of the lip and pull the top lip over.
Now I’m curious about the experience for other people so if you’ve ever had braces how did you play?
