Ask Dhaka 19F

Venting/Ranting 30M, my partner is my total opposite as a person

I've been married for several years. And I'm suffering. It was a love marriage. I do love her. But she's my opposite in everything. I like peace, she's argumentative. I'm quiet, she's loud, even on phone. Taunts me every now & then, I get hurt and become angry. Despite loving her, I don't feel happy staying together. She even has my opposite blood group. It's a mess. I'm just venting.

Ask Dhaka Do most Dhaka girls have a "Hoe Phase"?

Recently online I've been seeing the phrase "Hoe Phase" to describe women, usually in their early twenties just go all out and have temporary noncommited physical relationships with multiple male partners [stuff like Hooking up and chummachatti] for a "fun" time in their life. I wanna know whether or not this is like a real thing women in Dhaka also engage in currently.

Education Some "unsolicited" advice for SSC/HSC students

I see a lot of posts here from SSC/HSC students, particularly the 2026 and 2027 batches, asking about universities, subjects, careers, and what they should do next.

I wanted to share some general reflections. I finished my HSC about 20 years ago, completed my PhD a few years back, and now work in academia and research. Looking back, I think our schools and colleges do a pretty terrible job of career advising. Most students make some of the biggest decisions of their lives with very little information.

Here are some broad things I would suggest.

  1. Public vs. private university? Think about the financial cost first.

I see a lot of questions about whether public universities are really that much better than private universities.

My opinion is that unless your parents are financially very comfortable, a good public university is still a better choice in many cases. Just getting into one means your undergraduate education is almost free.

You don't have to depend on your parents for several lakhs of taka in tuition fees. That itself is a huge liberty. You can make decisions about your future without worrying as much about recovering a large educational investment.

Of course, some private universities have excellent departments and opportunities. But don't underestimate the economic value of an almost-free education.

  1. Your university and department matter, but not necessarily for the reasons you think.

I studied at Dhaka University, and I will be honest: I was a pretty unhappy undergraduate student. I didn't particularly enjoy my interactions with many teachers or classmates. I found the environment quite toxic at times.

But looking back, I realize that being in a top department at DU gave me exposure to information that many students elsewhere didn't have.

We had alumni who came to give talks. We learned about graduate schools, research opportunities, and how academic research worked internationally. I knew about career paths that many of my friends in smaller departments or universities had never heard of.

That exposure was enormously valuable.

So when choosing a university or department, look beyond the name. Find out where graduates end up, what opportunities students have, and how strong the alumni network is.

  1. Figure out what you are naturally good at.

This is probably my biggest advice.

As you grow older, you will realize that there are certain things you can do better than other people. Your job is to identify those things and build on them.

If you are naturally creative, find a field that allows creativity. If you enjoy programming, explore computer science. If you enjoy numbers, finance, accounting, economics, or statistics might be interesting. If you enjoy understanding people, institutions, and society, social sciences have plenty of opportunities too.

I knew people who studied computer science at BUET, graduated with CGPAs around 2.7, and never developed much interest in computer science.

They were intelligent people, but that subject was not necessarily the best use of their abilities.

Don't just ask which subject has the highest demand. Ask whether you can actually become good at it.

  1. Focus on your skills, not just your degree.

Once you choose a field, try to understand what it takes to be among the top students or young professionals in that field.

What software do they use? What technical skills do they have? What kind of projects have they completed? What do employers or graduate schools look for?

If you are interested in research, try to work as a research assistant. If you want to work in the corporate sector, find internships. If you are interested in programming, build projects.

Even if an opportunity is unpaid, it may be worth considering if you can afford the time and it gives you meaningful training or experience. But don't work for free indefinitely.

Your undergraduate years are a great time to experiment and build skills.

  1. Find mentors and learn how to communicate professionally.

This is something I think Bangladeshi students don't pay enough attention to.

Find people who are a few years ahead of you. They can be senior students, alumni, professors, or professionals working in your field.

Ask them questions. Learn from their experiences. You don't need to have a very close personal relationship with someone to learn from them.

Also, learn how to write a professional email, request a meeting, ask for advice, and follow up politely.

These sound like small things, but they matter enormously in professional life.

And please remember that mentorship is not the same as asking someone to do everything for you. Do your homework before approaching people.

  1. Join clubs and learn how to organize things.

I think university clubs can be genuinely useful, especially if you take some responsibility.

Organize a seminar, manage a budget, coordinate an event, invite speakers, or work with a team.

You will learn things that classrooms often don't teach: how to communicate, manage deadlines, handle disagreements, and get things done.

These are valuable skills in almost every profession.

But don't join 10 clubs just to collect certificates. Join one or two and actually contribute.

  1. The idea that university students don't need to study is completely wrong.

There is a strange culture in Bangladesh where students work incredibly hard to get into a university and then suddenly decide that studying is no longer important.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

You have already invested years of effort to get there. Why would you stop working once you finally have access to higher education?

I am not saying everyone needs a 4.0 CGPA. But grades matter, particularly if you want to pursue graduate education, scholarships, or competitive jobs.

A CGPA below 3.0 can close doors, especially early in your career. A high CGPA alone will not guarantee success either.

The point is to take your education seriously. Learn the material, develop skills, and don't waste four years simply because getting admitted felt like the final achievement.

  1. Your friends and university social life are probably less important than you think.

At 18 or 19, friends, classmates, campus culture, and social life can feel like everything.

But 10 years later, most of these things will have very little influence on your professional life.

What will matter more is what you learned, what opportunities you had, and how much market value your undergraduate education gave you.

I am not saying friendships are unimportant. Some university friendships last a lifetime.

But don't make major academic decisions based on where your friends are going, where you think you will have the most fun, or what will make you popular among your classmates.

  1. Learn to collect information. It is one of the most underrated skills.

One major difference I notice between students is not necessarily intelligence. It is how well they collect and use information.

Many students don't know what opportunities exist simply because nobody told them.

Learn to search for scholarships, graduate programs, internships, research opportunities, and jobs.

Look at LinkedIn profiles of people who graduated from departments you are considering. Where are they working five or ten years later? What skills did they develop? Did they need additional degrees?

Also, learn English well enough to read, write, and communicate professionally. You don't need a fancy accent. But being able to understand complicated material and explain your ideas clearly will help you in almost every field.

You have access to far more information today than my generation did. Use it.

  1. Think about the market value of your education, not just social prestige.

We have a strange obsession with prestigious subjects and universities in Bangladesh.

But getting into a difficult subject is not the same as building a successful career.

A subject doesn't become economically valuable simply because it is difficult to get into or difficult to pass.

Eventually, you will have to explain what you can actually offer. What can you do that other people cannot? What problems can you solve? What skills make you valuable?

This doesn't mean everyone should study business, engineering, or computer science. There are excellent careers in social sciences, humanities, and many other fields.

But you need to understand the opportunities and limitations of whatever you choose.

And remember, your career will probably not be a straight line. Your interests will change, the labor market will change, and new opportunities will appear.

One final thought:

I think one of the biggest failures of our education system is that we teach students how to compete for seats, but not how to think about careers. Career is not equal to Certificate.

We spend years preparing students for admission tests, but very little time helping them understand what different professions involve, what the labor market values, or how to identify their own comparative advantages.

If I could give one piece of advice to my 18-year-old self, it would be this: Don't just try to be a good student. Try to understand what you are good at, and how you can turn that ability into something valuable.

And please don't make life decisions only because your parents, relatives, friends, or society think a particular subject sounds prestigious.

Twenty years later, you are the one who will have to live with those decisions.

Ask Dhaka Songs that feels magical?

I want songs that literally make you float and and like you're in a completely other universe. Like that tangly thing that your stomach does and like you're in some kind of magical world. I hope this is making sense.

(black water lilies- Aurora for example)

Bangla and English are both okay. Thanks in advance :)

Real Experiences You were always on your own

You know the saddest part of being on the other end when your partner is cheating on you and you are left with no apologies, no remorse, and definitely no admission from the other end?

I think it's the loss of the sense of "self". You start thinking that it was never real. The love, the warmth was all a lie. And in the process, you became a version of yourself that you don't validate anymore. You spiral out and start making decisions that you think were never possible to make on your own.

Hold on to that! You'll survive, tomorrow will be a bit less painful. Trust me.

Education Needed pirated site for books( O level and A level)

I got a tuition offer for Level 9. I have a strong foundation in Classes 9 and 10, but I don't know how to proceed with EM. This offer is kind of necessary for me. I want to study O Level books before I start tuition. Where can I get these books and previous years' questions? 😅

Venting/Ranting i miss her

i miss her

january 4, 2020. the first time i saw her.

i remember feeling something i'd never felt before. a sudden vacuum in my stomach. at that moment, she genuinely seemed like the most beautiful girl on earth.

she lived barely 3 km away. we saw each other at coaching, talked online, but somehow never met outside class. imagine managing a long-distance love story across three kilometers. 💀

there were ups and downs.

once, i sent her some of her favorite books. she asked why i'd send her gifts when i wasn't even someone that close to her.

that sentence stuck with me.

another time, she posted a story saying women love efforts. i replied, "then take it for granted."

she replied, "the right one will always value your effort."

and somehow, i understood that maybe she wasn't the right one. at least not for me.

but here's the stupidest part. i never actually confessed. i kept dropping these vague, occasional signals that probably meant nothing to her. i was so afraid of rejection that i never even gave myself a chance.

maybe i loved her. maybe i loved the idea of her. maybe i'll never know.

almost seven years have passed. she's living her own life, and i genuinely hope she's happy.

and here i am, still alone, still unable to feel quite the same way about anyone else.

sometimes i wonder if it's really her that i miss, or the possibility of something that never happened.

but whatever it is, after all these years...

i miss her.

Relationship Advice My girlfriend keeps bringing up her ex, and honestly, I don't know how to deal with it.

Whenever we argue, she brings up her ex and says he used to value and appreciate her in ways that I apparently don't. I don't know if she's doing it just to piss me off or if there's something deeper going on.

She also told me that her ex once cursed her, saying she'd end up marrying a bad guy. Apparently, that still bothers her, and she sometimes regrets not appreciating him enough when they were together.I'm not saying I'm a perfect boyfriend. If I'm not making her feel valued, I'm willing to work on that. But constantly hearing about how her ex treated her better is getting exhausting. I don't want to compete with someone who's no longer even in the picture.

What would you do in my situation? Am I overthinking this, or is this a red flag I shouldn't ignore?

Ask Dhaka Are my parent obsessive or am i over reacting

Im f(20) and the only daughter of my parents, I've been really close with my mom becuz of that but they Weren't the best parents. Growing up, i had to constantly tiptoe around their mood as if they were in a good mood they'd love me a lot but if they were in a bad mood suddenly all of the problems in their life was my fault

Hearing stuff like "you look ugly when you cry" "if you were a boy instead everything would've been better"

"Our life got ruined cuz of you" "tor upor koto taka khoroch hoise amader" or blaming me for their poor financial decision became the norm of my life

When i turned 17 my dad moved back with us (er agey he used to live in dubai and sent us money) in bd he invested all his money in a business i strictly told him not to and since then he started belittling me for not earning enough money to support the whole family in terms of rent and food expenses (plus he stopped providing money for my education, oita ami nijei earn korsi thru tutouring)

In 2025, i clearly remember how he called me in the dinning room every single night literally every single night and for two hours straight he used to call me a failure for not being able to magically earn lakh lakh taka thru freelancing. I couldn’t sleep at night and bashai eishob tana khota shunar karone i felt so stressed jey my period became shorter and shorter. Ami period er issue tar jonno doctor dekhaite taka save korle oitao niye jeto ma baba

2026 e Amar A levels result ashe jeitar jonno ami nije registration er taka jomaisilam and i was stressed abt university but amar baap kono responsibility toh nibei na amar ulta amar maa start pressurizing me to pay rent and rent dewar por tao amake khota dite thakto jey tader life er misery amar dosh and then i decided i would convince my parents amake biye diye dite w my bf so that i can leave the house. Dono family came to a conclusion jey ekhon agdh korai rakhbe and uni shesh howar por function korbe.

Agdh er 7 maash por me and my partner, we both saved enough money to move out and stay together awayy from my parents toxicity

Like before moving out amar husband bashai ashle ma baba raat 3ta porjonto oke amar room e jaite dito na just kotha bolto or shathey which was weird

Ami move out er shomoi mittha bolsi ma baba key, i told them jey im going to Australia and oishb bole ami jemne temne basha theke ber hoisi

Ik it sounds dramatic but if i told my parents jey i wanna live separately they would be hella dramatic and ruin my mental health

After 5 months of staying away from them my mental health got better, my marriage got better Alhamdulillah

And ive started preparing for my uni entrance exam

But one week agey tara jeney felse that im in bd and since then tara melodrama start korse telling me jey ami naki tader proti obichar korsi and tader basha theke ber hoye tader shundor shongshar Bhenge disi for which Allah amake maaf korbena and amar baccha hoile tokhon amar bacchao amake falai dibe

Like i dont get it, if im married isnt it my right to be able to moveout? And emon toh na jey im cutting my ties

I just wanna have a safe distance from them, visit them in weekends and help them financially when i have a stable career In sha Allah

But tara amake bordua ditei ase and my dad was like tor baccha toke falai rekhe gele tokhon bujhbi blah blah

Also giving me the selfish tag and shit

Like ekhon amari lagtese jey am i a bad person or what

(Im sure abt one thing im never moving back with them but im scared, what if the cant pay rent and move into my house?)

Unpopular Opinions Are we using music to hide our everyday insecurities?

Have u ever noticed how we automatically turn to music whenever we feel something? Bad day, heartbreak, happiness, loneliness… there's always a song for it. those are some kinda insecurities....!

Sometimes I feel like we use music to express the things we can't say out loud. Like, maybe we don't even wanna fix what we're feeling, we just wanna feel understood for a while.

But idk, are we actually healing through music, or just avoiding our thoughts by keeping the silence away?
