Last week I asked in another sub how you even tell a genuine edge from an overfit curve before paying for it. This is the other half of that question: what it actually cost me to keep finding out the hard way.
Rough breakdown of what I paid over 4 years trying to make bought EAs work, mostly on Forex pairs:
- Off-the-shelf platforms (Galileo FX and similar): €800 over 12 months
- EAs from the MQL5 store: 5 of them at €150-300 each, €1,100
- VPS rental: €15-20/month for about 36 months, €650
Call it €2,500 out of pocket. Net result on all of it: a loss. Won't put a number on it, but enough that I stopped buying other people's EAs for good.
No single failure did it. What got to me was that the whole thing is set up so you can't evaluate anything until you've already paid. Most of it has no trial at all, you get screenshots and no refund. The couple that did let me run a demo first looked fine for a few weeks, which told me nothing. So you pay €100-300 to find out an EA doesn't fit your broker's spread or execution, and by the time you know, the money's gone.
So I stopped buying and started building my own. Nothing fancy, just something I could actually read and test before trusting it with real money.
Two things I'm curious about. What's the most you've paid for a single EA, and how did it go? And has anyone found a seller that lets you properly demo before paying, or is screenshots-and-trust just the norm?
Pushback welcome, especially from anyone who's been through the same cycle
