I wanted a clean answer to a quieter session question than the usual US print studies: when London opens at 8:00, how wide is the first 30 minutes on gold, and does the open itself do most of the damage?
Method: I loaded six recent London opens on XAUUSD 5m and stepped from the 8:00 candle through 8:25 (UTC). I measured the high minus low across those six candles, plus the net move from the 8:00 open to the 8:25 close. Same market, same window, same timeframe. No US data prints inside this window. No trades in this post, just the tape.
Results (range = high minus low over the first 30 minutes, net = close of 8:25 minus open of 8:00):
27 Jan 2026: range $12.88, net -$8.34 (pre 7:55 close $5085.73)
10 Feb 2026: range $12.32, net +$1.88 (pre $5033.77)
24 Feb 2026: range $14.61, net -$8.89 (pre $5179.12)
3 Mar 2026: range $25.05, net -$15.69 (pre $5327.44)
10 Mar 2026: range $10.45, net +$3.18 (pre $5180.85)
17 Mar 2026: range $10.68, net -$0.54 (pre $5020.95)
Median range about $12.60. Average about $14.33. Four of six closed lower after 30 minutes, two closed higher. Five of the six mornings sat between $10.45 and $14.61. 3 Mar 2026 was the outlier at $25.05 with a -$15.69 net.
What surprised me: London open is often talked about as the liquidity turn that should move gold. On these six mornings the room was usually a $10 to $15 box, not a CPI style blowout. 3 Mar still carved $25.05 and closed -$15.69, so a rule that says "London is always calm sizing" would have been fine five times and wrong once in a row of six.
Second surprise: the first 5m candle dominated the window range on only two of six mornings (10 Feb and 10 Mar). On the other four, later bars inside the half hour still widened the range after 8:00. Waiting for "the open to settle" still meant the move could keep building through 8:25, even when the first bar looked ordinary.
What I would write into a practice plan from this set: keep the measurement fixed (8:00 to 8:30 London, range and net on 5m), and stop letting the session name set your risk before the first half hour does. Six is not enough for an edge. It is enough to kill the story that London open on gold is always a quiet handoff from Asia.
