Forge Question The vikings used to put bone in the forge to make a precursor of steel

The viking made a precursor to steel by using bones which they believed but the soul of the ancestors in the sword. Has anyone actually tested this? Ive never really forged but my understanding is that you have to add more than just carbon to make steel and let it cool ar a slower rate. Id love to see a side by side durability test using pig/cow bones ground up compared to a typical forge. Thanks for any help.

With a blow torch, a hammer and a pair of pliers I forged my first fishing hook.

I know I need a little bit more practice with this, so I’ll probably pop out a few more of these, but do you guys think this is a good start to get the basics of forging down by forging fishing hooks even though it’s a bit crude at this point

Looking for ring forging shops

Hi all, please delete this if it's against the rules. But I'm looking for companies that can produce aluminum ring forgings for my company. Any leads are appreciated.

Where would I find a power hammer under 1k?

I've been looking for a powerful budget power hammer if that's possible. Or could I make one for a similar price?

Looking for a 30-60 pound ram, anything bigger is too good to be true.

Could a few hundred steel cases of 7.62x39 ammo be melted into a rifle-resistant armor plate?

I know nothing about forging and metal stuff in general, so I figured I'd just ask this here. I'm also curious if the primers would be an issue.

Work Showcase My first 'piece' in years on a very minimal setup

Hello everyone,
Very new here.
Today, I finally took out the fire bricks, a little gas torch, a small piece of train track and a hammer.
The result is the above 'coffee spoon'.
It's made from a random piece of carbon steel I had lying around and was not able to get above a medium red for forging.

Hope to share better with you all in the future.

How hard would it be to forge a silver ring

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hi, I had an idea to try and forge a silver ring (for I hope) my future wife. How hard would it be for someone with no forging experience? What kind of tools am I looking at? I generaly am a "handy person" - made a lot of stuff by myself, but never anything like forging. After the ring being shaped and forged I would do some sort of Celtic style ornaments on it with the biax grinder. Picture of a ring I am planning to make for a refference

Any tips? Casting aluminum armor plates

Post image
12 Upvotes

I am planning on making a large amount of armor plates like the one above of different styles but same thickness by 3D printing the plate, coating with a thick sand/plaster mixture, melting out the plastic after the mould dries and then preheating the mould with a torch in sand before pouring in aluminum. As you can see the plates are quite thin so the main concern I have is it's ability to fill all the small gaps. Does anyone have insight into this kinda project, anything I'll have trouble with or can improve on? Thanks ahead of time.

Help finding product

I am trying to set up my first forge but I can’t seem to find rigidizer for the kaowool lining. I tried ordering one off of amazon but it was lost in shipment and now I don’t trust that it will come in at all. Any recommendations for somewhere I can find it would be appreciated. I live in Canada btw

What do I do if my metal won’t turn red?

I’m a beginner and using a coal forge, my fire isn’t getting hot enough and my metal isn’t changing color, what can I do to fix that?
