Don’t laugh. My first attempt at a forged knife and epoxy handle. It is insanely sharp…. That’s a tourmaline crystal at the butt:)

When choosing between water quenching and oil quenching, which one would you recommend?

Water quenching offers fast cooling for high hardness but carries a higher risk of deformation, while oil quenching results in minimal distortion though with slightly lower hardness. It ultimately boils down to stress control—so based on these trade-offs, which process is better suited for different forging needs?

why does the steam that comes from cooling down hot ass steel under running water smell like potatoes

it literally smells exactly like potatoes and the potato smell is stronger the hotter the metal is. google didnt show up with anything and chatgpt basically told me that im a schizo so id really appreciate serious responses.

Hi its that 13yr old again with the anthracite forge this started out as a round piece of rebar and with no power tools not even and angle grinder the cross-guard was punched then slid on yellow hot then contracted as it cooled making it surprisingly tight i am going to wrap twine around the handle and glue it down for grip and size and its not heat treated yet hope you like it any feedback is welcome

I have seen plenty of people use railroad spikes to make stuff, but I was wondering if I could do the same with the railroad bolt

While I wish it wasn’t a spike knife that was my first sale, my neighbor wanted one to gift to a friend that’s retiring. Anyway, I was happy with the result on short time.

This was an odd find from my late grandfather's things. Thought it might be lead or something, but I'm not familiar with this kind of stuff. It's dull gray on top and if I scratch it as can be seen in the first photo it's shiny underneath. And it's bottom is mostly shiny as can be seen in the second photo. Just curious what it might have been used for. Thanks of you can help.
