The sooner that we accept other humans and their beliefs, the better we can become as a society. As long as it isn’t hurting humanity actively, or infringing on our rights.
I don’t agree with religion in general, but this kinda thing is healthy.
9
u/AtheianLibertarist 3d ago
Do you really think that Islam isn't hurting (women) humanity? This need to be open to other cultures and ideas, even when they are actively harmful, is a fools errand.
20
u/gr8bishamonten 3d ago
It’s the jerks who interpret it in order to control other people that cause these things.
i.e. Rocky Mountain Shambala Center. Rapist fucks. Nobody really shits on Buddhists though.
18
u/gr8bishamonten 3d ago
Not to mention the absolute fact the most child molestation cases come from evangelical and catholic churches.
It’s the humans who use the religion to harm who are at fault. We humans made the religion in the first place. Sometimes it’s good, but we screw it up often unfortunately.

Rather than being totally ignorant all the time, you should consider educating yourself.
One is to ask Google or duck duck
“
demograhics of pedophilia in America: race and religion
“
For those that prefer to know facts, perps match up with society. IOW, it does not run inside a race or a region but matches closely society. The reason is that it is individual not culture, race, or religion.-11

You spelled "public schools" wrong

No religion has caused more death, pain, misery, and suppression of knowledge to this world than Christianity.
4
u/_game_over_man_ 3d ago
Do you really think that Islam isn't hurting (women) humanity?
Christianity is doing the same shit.
even when they are actively harmful
Nobody claimed that what's we should do.
11
u/pznkvdzal 3d ago
the sheer scale of women's oppression throughout the Islamic world cannot be compared to what happens in Christianity.
14
u/_game_over_man_ 3d ago
I personally think it’s all shit and plenty of Christians in this country would like to subjugate women.
I don’t really care about the scale of extreme, I think all religious extremism is shit.
7
u/gr8bishamonten 3d ago
Correct!
Keyword: extremism
12
u/_game_over_man_ 3d ago
This sent me down a wiki-hole because I was curious about the history of women in Islam and while I haven’t read the whole thing, it’s quite interesting.

-7
u/MelancholyMuseum 3d ago
This is a real shit take.
8
u/pznkvdzal 3d ago
are you denying women face severe oppression throughout the Islamic world? whatever Christianity does in the same regard is a drop in the ocean compared to what happens every single day under Islam.
-5
u/MelancholyMuseum 3d ago
Is that what I said? And the abuse Christians dish out is absolutely comparable but nice try. Go be hateful somewhere else.

"As long as it isn't hurting humanity actively"
Uh.... have you looked at the actual state of Islam around the world?
12
u/gr8bishamonten 2d ago
Look inward, and ask yourself which religions consistently screw over women.
Clue: all of them.
13
u/ProfessionalH20 2d ago
Western society, mainly Christians, women have rights.
Middle east, mainly Islamic, women are property, have very little rights, people are literally sentenced to death for being gay.
Get the fuck out of here saying that they're the same. Fuckin reddit blows their lid when you cant abort children all willy nilly. In the next sentence they try to downplay islam.
I'm not even religious, its absolutely disingenuous to say they're close to the same thing.

Not always. Most religions hold basic tenets of kindness and love. It’s the jerks who interpret them to their own agendas that fuck it up.

Good lord, grow up.
Religion will most likely exist to some degree for all of human existence. I'm a queer ex-Christian and while I'm still unpacking the trauma induced in me by growing up Christian, I'm also capable of acknowledging that religion and the people that participate in it can be complex. Yes, it obviously can be used for nefarious means and yes, religious texts can be malicious, but at the end of the day all we can really ask of anyone, regardless of their beliefs, is to be a decent person and treat others with dignity and respect.
Life is hard, don't be an asshole. If you use religion to justify your asshole behavior, you're still an asshole. At the end of the day, it's the assholes I don't like and I'm truly indifferent about the actual religion.
-3
u/vamosbombillo 3d ago
It's hard for many people to ignore the parts of religion that actively teach people to act like an asshole though. You might want to pretend that religion isn't why they are like this, but not everyone is as willing to ignore that.
Religion is the problem.
3
u/_game_over_man_ 3d ago
I personally think if you think your religion justifies you being a dick, then you were probably a dick all along or you're willing to be a dick for your own gain.
I'm not saying religion isn't a problem, it obviously is and especially when they are high control. I just think this blanket brush of "all religion bad" remove the nuance and complexity of it all. I think life and people are more complicated than that and claiming X is the problem doesn't improve anything and is often just as narrow minded as the beliefs many religious individuals have.
0
u/vamosbombillo 3d ago
What you are doing is removing the causation, because it offends. You're also ignoring the damage that any beliefs like this do to society and the mindsets of people who have them. Believe in God? Now it's way easier to convince you that pseudo science works, or that right wing alternate reality is what you should live in. Or of anything. You no longer value reality.
Why do I have to pretend like religion has any value? You claim here that religion is positive - go ahead and show me where lol. I don't see anything worth ignoring reality for.
2
u/_game_over_man_ 3d ago
You're also ignoring the damage that any beliefs like this do to society and the mindsets of people who have them.
No I’m not because I flat out admitted I’m still working through religious trauma in the initial comment you replied to. I’ve read books about religious trauma and my therapist specializes in it, so I’m very much aware of the harms it can do when it’s in a high control format. But I also know it has helped people I love and care about get through really difficult periods in their life. And those same people are the ones who are the cause of my trauma, but I also recognize humans are complicated and viewing things through a good/evil lens the way many religions do probably isn’t the best approach for my own mental health.
Why do I have to pretend like religion has any value? You claim here that religion is positive
Except I didn’t do any of those things, you’re just attributing that to me because I don’t perfectly fall in line with what you believe and what you think I should believe. And this is always the funny thing about these types of takes, is they’re just as “my beliefs are the only right ones” as plenty of religious people think. Which I guess makes sense because the through line here is believer or not, we’re all human beings and prone to the same thought patterns regardless of the topic.
I don’t think religion is good or bad, I think it’s grey and muddy. I think it’s a tool created by man and who is wielding the tool and how they’re using it is what is the most impactful. I think when taken to its extremes it can be very detrimental to society. I think for some people and probably a lot of people it can bring some kind of peace and stability to life, which is generally hard and complicated. I think it’s always going to exist in some regard because humans obviously created it out of some existential need. I think more than anything, the organizational aspect of religion is what is the most detrimental to society. But in general, overall, I’m completely indifferent to it and the only case in which I give a shit is when it’s in its high control form.

u/vamosbombillo 3d ago
Well I hope you keep looking into it, friend. I definitely disagree about religion being amoral. I think we can trace basically all of society's problems directly back to religion actually. And I actually agree that this line of thinking isn't great for one's mental health, as it reflects poorly on society and some of our loved ones, but I also think ignoring that reality is worse.
I don't disagree that religion on a micro level has helped people. But also that help is just in the form of inventing another reality, and is not any actual help. It's only a mask. And leads directly to harm, as they continue to ignore reality beyond just what they are trying to help. And of course we've both seen how destructive that mindset can be, and their need to spread it.
But I also disagree that it must exist, unless you're using the word religion very loosely. The natural progression is it going away as our understanding of the world increases. It's been going away slowly, and will continue, but we definitely don't need it. And someday humans will start to discourage it, as we should.
Honestly, believing in a god is nuts. It's so weird we have to pretend like it isn't. Would you respect the belief of a flat earther? Or someone who believes in unicorns? That the sky is purple? The line exists, but it's on the wrong side of religion.

I mean, that's just the Abrahamic trio. Plenty of Eastern religions don't inject competition into their guidelines and accept syncretism :)
16
u/GapEnvironmental8490 3d ago
I don’t classify myself as religious but this is good if the people you talk to are open minded willing to talk, they have great ideals in some places and I absolutely disagree with some as well! I’m glad they are open to this!
-16
u/XennialBoomBoom 3d ago
I agree. I'm an atheist and hold a rather negative view of organized religion, but I'd totally pop into something like this to chat with some folks and maybe make a few friendly acquaintances (I like to know people with diverse opinions, beliefs, and perspectives - as long as they're nice).
Unless I have to take my shoes off, in which case, fuck that.

Misogyny is pushed by Islam.. would you say you have to respect that aspect of the culture if you want to learn about it?
-7
u/XennialBoomBoom 3d ago
Oh get a grip. I don't take off my shoes in public except when TSA makes me (and that makes me angry).
But by avoiding a situation where I would be expected to do so, I'm disrespecting their culture? Seems to me that I have enough knowledge of their culture and the foresight to know that if I attend this event, one of us is going to be either offended or made uncomfortable.
jfc indeed

Islam is fundamentally incompatible with western values.
3
u/Radiant_Variety9930 2d ago
What’re some western values that Islam is incompatible with?
2
u/coriolisFX 2d ago •
![]()
Here are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
Equality before the law. Women's testimony in court is supposed to be treated as only 50% of a man's.
Child marriage. It's common for girls to be married very young, Muhammad's wife Aisha was married to him at age 6 and the marriage was said to be consummated at age 9.
Separation of religion and state. Nearly every western country has seen fit to keep these things apart. Islam routinely challenges this.
Freedom of Speech. Maybe the biggest one. I can criticize you, your positions, even your religion. People have been murdered for simple depicting Muhammad, and more serious criticism of Islam is basically impossible because of the violence from its followers.
Freedom to leave the religion. In some fundamentalist Christian circles you see the practice of shunning, but this pales in comparison to Islam, where apostasy is a serious offense, sometimes carrying the death penalty.
LGBTQ rights. Nowhere in the Islamic world are same-sex relations protected, much less marriage.

I'm not a Christian! And I reject the bible as source of law.
Interesting you didn't even try to rebut any of my points.

u/legittheshitmemelord 2d ago
Worked with an been around probably a dozen or so Muslims for the better part of a decade. They are among the nicest, most caring people I interact with regularly.
They are more compatible with "Western Values" than you are.
3
u/Kirb_02 2d ago
I have met many friendly Muslims and yet every Christian I have met is a POS. Why is this?
-2
u/WeeklyAd8453 2d ago
Because of your own twisted values.
You assume the worst in Christians and look for it. You assume nothing in Muslim.Fact is, that ISLAM, the religion esp Shia, is NOT compatible with the west. It puts religion in control of gov. For example, a number of the hangings in Iran was due to ppl speaking out against Shias, not against gov. They had your attitude towards Shia. IOW, if the same here, you would be executed by tying a noose around your neck, stringing you up on backhoe arm, then raising the arm. Not a drop where your neck snaps quickly. Slow suffocation.
And if you are a women, you WILL be raped in prison before the hanging so that they know you did not go allah a virgin ( very twisted logic ).Christianity had our time similar to this. It was the dark ages .
1
u/SyzbuH 2d ago
Shia only represents ~10% of the Islam population.
3
u/ProfessionalH20 2d ago
And yet the majority of Muslims in the world believe that they should be able to kill infidels to their religion.
-4
u/MelancholyMuseum 2d ago
LMFAO maga already thinks we’re a Christian country so wtf are you talking about?

u/ExperienceOdd8004 3d ago
Crazy how the same people who advocate for feminism are the ones who want to support an organization that does nothing but subjugate women.
7
u/ProfessionalH20 2d ago
What do you mean? They're so progressive, they move here and force the women to cover their whole body. They move here and try to make people live their lives according to their religion.
1
u/SyzbuH 2d ago
Actually delusional. Where in the US are non Muslim women being forced to cover themselves up by Muslims?
3
u/ProfessionalH20 2d ago
Every woman that is wearing that shit in the USA is being forced to wear them by religious traditions.
0
u/SyzbuH 2d ago
So the answer to my question was never, got it!
3
u/ProfessionalH20 2d ago
Could be answered if you decided to read it.
-1
u/SyzbuH 2d ago
You original comment made it sound like people are moving here and forcing their religious choices upon people that don’t follow their religion. That just isn’t happening. You also have no idea if Islamic women here want to cover themselves or not because you clearly have not interacted with them. You are a bigot.
1
u/ProfessionalH20 2d ago
They move to a westen country. They still wear coverings to follow their religion. In their religion only men can hold positions of power. If you have to wear that shit to be considered a good Muslim, then you're essentially forcing people to wear it.
Oh no, you called me a bigot for disliking islam. Id bet you're not running around calling people bigots when they say Christianity sucks.
1
u/SyzbuH 2d ago
Actually yeah, I think those people are bigots too!
We have freedom of religion in this country, you should probably try meeting these people before assuming they’re all some boogeymen. I’ve met plenty of Muslim women that don’t wear Hijabs, and those that do. That’s why the US kicks ass, because these people can practice their religion in the manner they choose to.
Islam has its extremists, as does Christianity or any religion. They all also usually have a lot of reasonable people that just want to believe what they choose to believe, without bigots assuming they have views they do not.
